For one computer, Ollama’s own desktop app is the simplest starting point. Msty Studio is the most convenient bundled desktop option, while Enchanted is a focused client for Apple devices that connect to an existing Ollama server.
Every choice depends on the same foundation: Ollama must be installed and running, and at least one model must be downloaded. The exception is Msty Studio, whose documentation says it bundles the latest Ollama service.

Which Ollama GUI should you choose?
| GUI | Best for | Where it runs | Ollama included? | Server or multi-user use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Open WebUI | A full-featured browser interface, home server, NAS, or several users | Web browser; commonly deployed with Docker | No; it normally connects to your Ollama service | Strongest fit |
| Ollama app | The simplest personal desktop experience | Downloads are listed for macOS, Windows, and Linux; the initial app announcement described macOS and Windows | It is Ollama’s own interface, so no separate Ollama backend is needed beyond the installation | Primarily single-user |
| Msty Studio | A desktop app that can combine local and hosted AI services | Desktop application | Yes, according to its documentation, which says it bundles the latest Ollama service | Primarily personal desktop use |
| Enchanted | A native Apple client for an Ollama server you already run | macOS, iOS, and visionOS | No; it connects to a self-hosted server and does not run models itself | Useful as a client, not a server console |
Feature lists and installers change quickly, so check the current download and documentation pages for your operating system before installing. No reliable, primary-source adoption statistics establish one GUI as the most popular; the recommendation above is based on deployment fit and documented behavior rather than a market-share claim.

Ollama is the local model service. It downloads model files, starts inference, and exposes a local API. A GUI is a client layered on top of that service: it supplies conversation history, model selection, file or knowledge features where supported, and a more approachable way to manage chats than typing API requests.

In the usual arrangement, the model runs on the machine hosting Ollama while the interface runs in a browser or desktop application. A browser GUI can therefore be on another device, provided the network and Ollama binding allow it. A desktop client can be on the same computer or can connect to an Ollama server elsewhere. Enchanted is explicitly a client-only example; it does not execute the model locally.
That separation explains the most common setup error. A container or another computer cannot reach a service bound only to localhost on the host. Open WebUI’s Docker instructions use host.docker.internal to address the host, and Ollama must listen beyond localhost for that route to work.
Open WebUI: the best general-purpose choice
Open WebUI is the strongest default when you want a browser-based interface, a shared home server, or a NAS deployment. Several independent roundups place it first, and describe it as one of the most feature-complete Ollama frontends. Its main advantage is deployment flexibility: users can open a browser rather than installing a client on every device.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When Open WebUI is a good fit
- You want to keep models on a desktop, mini-PC, or NAS and access them from multiple browsers.
- You need separate accounts or a shared interface rather than a single-user desktop window.
- You are comfortable running Docker and preserving an application data volume.
- You want a frontend that can later connect to more than one compatible backend instead of locking the interface to one local installation.
What it requires
The normal :main image expects an Ollama service (or another supported API provider) outside the container. Keep the persistent volume open-webui:/app/backend/data; removing it discards the interface’s stored data when the container is replaced.
Ollama’s own desktop app: the shortest path
Ollama now has an official app, so older guides that say Ollama has no GUI are out of date. The announcement described availability for macOS and Windows, while the current download listing includes macOS, Windows, and Linux. Availability of a particular interface build can vary by operating system, so use the installer offered for your machine.
This is the least complicated option for one person on one computer: install Ollama, download a model, and use the supplied app instead of adding a separate web server. It is not the natural choice for a household server where several people need browser access, because the app is designed around the local desktop rather than a central multi-user deployment.
Msty Studio: bundled local service plus other providers
Msty Studio presents a desktop workspace that can combine local engines, including MLX, llama.cpp, and Ollama, with hosted providers. Its documentation says it bundles the latest Local AI service (Ollama), which can remove the separate-backend step that other clients require.

That convenience is useful if you want one desktop application to switch between local and hosted models. Verify the current edition and feature limits before relying on advanced functions. Secondary roundups describe Knowledge Stacks as limited on the free tier, but that detail has not been confirmed against official pricing documentation, so treat the free-tier capability as subject to change rather than a guaranteed specification.
Enchanted: an Apple client for an existing server
Enchanted is a native client for macOS, iOS, and visionOS. It connects to a self-hosted Ollama server and does not run models itself. Choose it when Ollama is already installed on a Mac or another reachable machine and you want an Apple-native front end on supported devices.
Because it is client-only, installing Enchanted alone will not make a model available. You must first install Ollama, pull a model, confirm that the server is reachable from the device, and then enter the server address in the client. It is therefore a poor first choice if you want an all-in-one installer or a browser interface for non-Apple users.
Why this guide does not provide an LM Studio setup
LM Studio’s current official site and documentation were not available in the material used for this guide. Its behavior, Ollama compatibility, and setup steps are therefore not established here. Do not assume that instructions written for Open WebUI or another client apply to it; verify its current documentation separately before choosing it for an Ollama workflow.
Prerequisites before installing any GUI
- A supported macOS, Windows, or Linux computer for Ollama. The exact GUI operating-system support differs by project.
- Enough system memory or VRAM for the model you intend to run. Quantization, context length, and GPU offloading affect actual requirements.
- Disk space for the model files and for the GUI’s stored conversations, uploads, or indexes.
- Permission to expose the Ollama service on the local network if another device or a Docker container will connect.
- A current Ollama installation and at least one pulled model.
One secondary guide offers a rough VRAM rule of thumb: about 8 GB for an 8B model, 16 GB for a 14B model, and 24 GB for a 32B model. Those figures are not official Ollama requirements. They are planning estimates only; actual performance depends on quantization, context size, CPU fallback, and concurrent users.
Install Ollama and pull your first model
- Download and install Ollama for macOS, Windows, or Linux from the current Ollama download page.
- Start Ollama and confirm that its service is running. A GUI cannot connect to a stopped service.
- Pull a model from a terminal. For example,
ollama pull qwen3downloads the model namedqwen3; choose a model whose size fits your hardware and whose license and capabilities suit your work. - List the models already downloaded by querying the local tags endpoint:
curl http://localhost:11434/api/tags. A successful response should list the model you pulled. - Run a basic prompt from the Ollama command line or your desktop app. This separates an Ollama or hardware problem from a GUI connection problem.
If the tags request fails, stop and fix Ollama before installing a frontend. A GUI cannot repair a missing service, an incomplete model download, or insufficient memory.
Set up Open WebUI with Ollama in Docker
The following pattern follows Open WebUI’s documented Docker connection settings. It assumes Ollama runs directly on the host and Open WebUI runs in a Docker container.

1. Make Ollama reachable from the container
Ollama’s default localhost-only binding works for programs on the same host, but not for a container reaching the host through Docker’s gateway name. Configure Ollama to listen on 0.0.0.0 (or otherwise on an address reachable from the container), then restart the service. Do not expose that port to the public internet without authentication and network controls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2. Start the standard Open WebUI image
Run a container with the host gateway mapping, the Ollama base URL, and a persistent data volume:
docker run -d -p 3000:8080 --add-host=host.docker.internal:host-gateway -v open-webui:/app/backend/data --name open-webui --restart always -e OLLAMA_BASE_URL=http://host.docker.internal:11434 ghcr.io/open-webui/open-webui:main
The --add-host=host.docker.internal:host-gateway option gives the container a stable name for the Docker host. OLLAMA_BASE_URL=http://host.docker.internal:11434 tells Open WebUI where Ollama is listening, and -v open-webui:/app/backend/data preserves the application data across container updates.
3. Open the interface
Open http://localhost:3000 on the Docker host. From another device, use the host computer’s LAN address and port 3000, subject to your firewall rules. Complete the initial account setup, select the pulled model, and send a short prompt.
4. Confirm the connection
- The model list should contain the model returned by
http://localhost:11434/api/tags. - A test prompt should produce a response without a connection error.
- After restarting the container, your account and stored data should remain because the named volume is still attached.
Open WebUI image choices
Open WebUI publishes an ghcr.io/open-webui/open-webui:ollama tag that bundles Ollama in one container. The standard :main image is intended to connect to an external Ollama service or another supported API provider. The bundled image can simplify a disposable or self-contained deployment, while the separate-service pattern gives you clearer control over the host’s models, updates, and hardware.
Whichever image you use, keep the data volume and record which backend owns the model files. Accidentally running two independent Ollama services can leave models downloaded in one environment while the GUI is connected to the other.
Connect a desktop GUI to Ollama
Ollama’s own app
- Install the current Ollama package for your operating system.
- Launch the app and allow it to start its local service if prompted.
- Pull a model through the app or with
ollama pull. - Select that model and send a short test prompt.
If the app shows no models, verify the command-line tags endpoint and make sure the app is using the same user account and Ollama installation.

Msty Studio
- Install the current desktop build.
- Use its local-engine setup to select the bundled Ollama service, or point it at an Ollama server you already operate.
- Confirm that the model list is populated before adding hosted providers.
- Run a small prompt first, then configure any knowledge or workspace features you need.
Because Msty’s documentation says the latest Ollama service is bundled, a separate Ollama install may not be necessary for the self-contained path. If you instead select an external server, that server must remain running and reachable.
Enchanted
- Install Enchanted on the supported Apple device.
- On the computer hosting Ollama, pull a model and confirm it appears in
http://localhost:11434/api/tags. - Configure Ollama to accept connections from the device’s network, then note the host’s reachable address and port.
- Enter that server address in Enchanted and select the available model.
- Send a short test prompt while both devices are on the same trusted network.
Do not treat Enchanted as an offline model runtime. If the host is asleep, Ollama is stopped, or the network route is blocked, the client has nothing to execute.

“Connection refused” or an empty model list
- Check that Ollama is running.
- Run
curl http://localhost:11434/api/tagson the Ollama host. - Confirm that the GUI points to port 11434 and to the correct host.
- For Docker, verify both

Open WebUI works on the host but not in Docker
This nearly always indicates a binding or address problem. Ollama may still be listening only on localhost, or the container may be missing the host-gateway mapping. Configure Ollama to listen on a reachable address, recreate the container with the documented options, and check firewall rules between Docker and the host.
The model appears but generation stops or becomes extremely slow
Inspect memory use and model size. The 8/16/24 GB VRAM figures are only rough third-party guidance; a model can fall back to system memory or CPU, making responses much slower. Try a smaller model or shorter context, close other GPU-heavy applications, and test again before blaming the GUI.
Data disappears after an update
Check that the container still mounts open-webui:/app/backend/data. Replacing a container without its volume creates a fresh Open WebUI data directory. Do not delete the volume while troubleshooting unless you intentionally want to start over.
A remote Apple client cannot connect
Confirm the host address from the client’s network, that Ollama is listening beyond localhost, and that the firewall permits the connection on the chosen private network. Test from the same network first; public exposure adds security risks and is not required for a home setup.
Security and privacy decisions
Local inference does not automatically mean every component is private. Model downloads, hosted-provider connections, browser access, Docker networking, and any remote exposure each have separate implications. Keep Ollama and Open WebUI on a trusted network unless you have deliberately configured authentication, encryption, updates, and firewall rules.
Best Value
For a shared Open WebUI installation, create individual accounts where available, limit who can reach the web port, and preserve the data volume so access settings are not lost during upgrades. Avoid forwarding port 11434 directly to the public internet. A local-only desktop app is simpler to secure because its interface and service remain on one machine.
Updating without breaking the setup
- Record the image tag or installer version before upgrading.
- Back up the Open WebUI data volume before replacing its container.
- Update Ollama and the GUI separately so you can identify which change caused a regression.
- After each update, check the tags endpoint, confirm the model list, and send a short prompt.
- Recheck the project’s current operating-system support and connection labels; documentation and image tags are volatile.
A practical decision framework
Choose Open WebUI when
You want one Ollama host serving browsers, a NAS or home server deployment, or a richer interface than a basic desktop window. Be prepared to configure Docker networking and persistent storage.
Choose Ollama’s app when
You want the fewest moving parts on one Mac, Windows, or Linux computer and do not need a shared web service.
Choose Msty Studio when
You prefer a desktop workspace that can combine local engines and hosted providers, and you value its documented bundled Ollama service. Verify the current plan limits for any advanced feature you depend on.
Choose Enchanted when
Your devices are in Apple’s ecosystem and Ollama already runs on a reachable self-hosted machine. It is a client, not a replacement for the server.
Bottom line
For most people, start with Ollama plus Open WebUI if you need browser access or more than one user; start with Ollama’s own app for a single personal computer. Msty Studio is the simplest bundled alternative, and Enchanted is the focused Apple client for an Ollama server you already operate. In every case, prove the backend first with a pulled model and the tags endpoint, then add the GUI. That order turns a vague interface problem into a clearly testable Ollama, network, or application issue.
