There is no single best offline navigation device for every long-distance walk. A Garmin GPSMAP 67 is a well-documented choice to compare if you want a dedicated handheld with a color map screen and preloaded routable maps. The eTrex SE is a simpler AA-powered alternative. A phone can also work if you download the right map area and detail before you lose reliable connectivity. Choose based on route coverage, battery plan, screen and controls, weather exposure, and whether you need satellite messaging—not on a promise that any device has every trail.

What matters most on a long-distance walk

Offline navigation only works when the needed map content is already stored on the device. A GPS receiver can determine a position without mobile reception, but that does not guarantee the displayed map contains the trail, is current, or is detailed enough to navigate safely. The U.S. National Park Service (NPS) cautions that a consumer device’s GPS position can be more accurate than its displayed base map.

  • Route coverage: Confirm that the exact route and surrounding area are represented, with useful trail, terrain, and land-feature detail. Check the relevant land manager or trail organization for current maps, closures, and route conditions.
  • Power: Account for the device’s operating mode, screen and wireless settings, charging access, and the ability to carry or replace its power source. Manufacturer maximum runtimes are not guaranteed trip runtimes.
  • Readability and operation: Consider screen size, sunlight visibility, and whether you can operate the device with gloves or in rain. A simpler screen can be adequate for recording a track but may be less useful for inspecting a complex map.
  • Positioning and durability: Satellite-system support and water resistance are useful specifications, but neither proves that the map itself is complete or correct.
  • Communications: Offline maps and GPS positioning are not the same as satellite messaging or an SOS service. Check subscription requirements and local rules if you need communications beyond mobile coverage.

Dedicated GPS devices compared

Device Maps and display Power and stated runtime Other relevant details Best fit
Garmin GPSMAP 67 Garmin lists a 3-inch sunlight-readable color display and preloaded routable TopoActive maps for the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. Internal rechargeable lithium-ion battery; Garmin lists up to 180 hours in default GPS mode and up to 840 hours in expedition mode. Multi-band GNSS, altimeter, barometer, 3-axis compass, IPX7 water rating, 8.1 oz (230 g) with batteries; supports added maps and microSD storage up to 32 GB. Walkers who want a dedicated color map screen, physical handheld, and multi-band positioning, after checking regional map coverage.
Garmin eTrex SE Garmin describes a 2.2-inch high-contrast screen, waypoint and trail tracking/navigation, and a digital compass that works while stationary. The cited information does not establish map detail comparable to the GPSMAP 67. Two AA batteries, sold separately; Garmin’s March 2023 announcement lists up to 168 hours in standard mode and up to 1,800 hours in expedition mode. IPX7 water rating; simpler display than the GPSMAP 67. Walkers who prefer replaceable AA batteries and a basic handheld over a more map-focused display.
Garmin eTrex 32x Garmin’s Singapore product page lists routable TopoActive roads and trails. Two AA batteries; Garmin lists up to 25 hours in GPS mode. 8 GB internal memory plus microSD. Garmin labels the model discontinued. A legacy or used-market possibility; verify condition, included maps, and availability before relying on it.

The GPSMAP 67 and eTrex SE figures above are manufacturer-stated maximums, not independent runtime test results. The GPSMAP 67 specifications and map coverage are from Garmin’s product listing accessed in 2026; the eTrex SE figures are from Garmin’s 2023 announcement; and the eTrex 32x details are from Garmin’s Singapore page accessed in 2026. Actual runtime depends on settings and use.

GPSMAP 67: a feature-rich handheld candidate

The GPSMAP 67 combines a map-oriented color display with a rechargeable battery and the listed TopoActive coverage for the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. Those regional details matter: do not assume the same included maps apply to a device sold in another market. Confirm what is included for the unit you plan to buy and whether the specific long-distance route appears at useful detail.

#1 Best Overall
Garmin 010-02256-00 eTrex 22x, Rugged Handheld GPS Navigator, Black/Navy
  • Explore confidently with the reliable handheld GPS
  • 2.2” sunlight-readable color display with 240 x 320 display pixels for improved readability
  • Preloaded with Topo Active maps with routable roads and trails for cycling and hiking
  • Support for GPS and GLONASS satellite systems allows for tracking in more challenging environments than GPS alone
  • 8 GB of internal memory for map downloads plus a micro SD card slot

Garmin’s GPSMAP 67 manual recommends reducing screen brightness and backlight timeout, using expedition mode, and disabling wireless, Bluetooth, or additional satellite systems when extending battery life matters. Those changes can trade convenience or positioning options for lower power use.

GPSMAP 67i: add it for satellite communications

The GPSMAP 67i adds inReach two-way messaging, location tracking, and interactive SOS coordination. Garmin says an active satellite subscription is required. This is a communications capability in addition to navigation; it is not a feature of offline maps alone. Check the service’s current terms, coverage, and the rules that apply where you will walk.

eTrex SE: simpler screen, replaceable batteries

The eTrex SE’s two-AA design lets a walker carry spare batteries instead of depending entirely on recharging the device, but the batteries are sold separately. Its smaller, simpler display is a different trade-off from the GPSMAP 67’s color mapping screen. Choose it only after confirming that its mapping and navigation functions suit the route you intend to follow.

eTrex 32x: treat as a legacy purchase

Garmin’s Singapore listing marks the eTrex 32x discontinued. Its listed routable roads and trails and AA-powered operation may still be relevant when considering a used or remaining-stock device, but the listing does not establish current availability elsewhere. Inspect the unit and verify exactly which maps are installed rather than assuming a second-hand device includes usable route coverage.

When an offline phone map is enough

A phone is a reasonable option when the specific map layer, region, and route are appropriate and have been downloaded before leaving reliable connectivity. It can be convenient for consulting a detailed map, but downloading some map content is not proof that a long-distance trail is represented completely or accurately. Plan for the phone’s power needs and carry a paper map and compass when appropriate for the route and your navigation skills.

Use official park information where it applies

The NPS says its free iOS and Android app covers more than 400 national parks and allows users to download entire park content for offline use. Its Glacier National Park page, updated June 24, 2026, advises visitors to download the app and save park content before arriving because reception is unreliable there; it notes no cell coverage outside Apgar and St. Mary. Those coverage details apply to Glacier, not to parks or trails generally.

Rank #4
Garmin eTrex® SE, GPS Handheld Navigator

Great Smoky Mountains National Park separately offers a free NPS app, downloadable GPS-enabled topographic maps for popular mobile mapping apps, and paper maps. These are park-specific resources, not evidence that an all-purpose mapping app contains every long-distance route.

How to choose for your route

  1. Identify the authoritative map source. Find the current map and closure information from the land manager or trail organization responsible for your route. Check that it represents the exact route, not just the general park or region.
  2. Confirm offline availability before departure. On a phone, download the correct region and map detail while connected. On a handheld, verify the included map coverage and any additional map or storage requirements. Where available, check the downloaded content itself rather than relying only on a product description.
  3. Match the device to your navigation needs. If you need to inspect map detail on the device, compare the GPSMAP 67’s color screen with the simpler eTrex SE display. If replaceable batteries matter more than a larger map display, consider the eTrex SE. If using a phone, make sure its offline map actually covers the route.
  4. Build a realistic power plan. Treat the quoted device runtimes as manufacturer maxima in specified modes. Think through likely screen use, settings, charging opportunities, and backup power. For the eTrex SE, remember that two AA batteries are sold separately.
  5. Separate navigation from emergency communications. Decide whether offline maps and position recording meet your needs or whether you also want satellite messaging and SOS. For the latter, confirm the GPSMAP 67i’s active-subscription requirement and applicable service terms.
  6. Carry a route-appropriate backup. A paper topographic or park map and compass can provide a fallback, but only if you know how to use them. Do not treat any consumer device or basemap as infallible.

What the available comparisons do—and do not—establish

The cited product information provides manufacturer specifications for named Garmin devices, while the NPS examples show how offline mapping and reception vary by park. It does not establish an independent head-to-head runtime or accuracy winner, a universal statistic for trail-map completeness, or current cross-market prices. No single device can therefore be called universally best on this evidence. Regional availability, included maps, app features, and subscription terms can vary and should be checked for the particular route and purchase.
