Gaia GPS, onX Backcountry, and AllTrails can all help with hiking navigation without cell service, but the right choice depends on the maps and offline tools you need. Gaia GPS documents selectable map sources and resolutions plus offline routing data; onX Backcountry supports offline trails, topo detail, waypoints, lines, and tracking; AllTrails offers downloaded maps to Plus and Peak members. These are feature-based options, not a tested performance ranking. Whichever you choose, download the map before leaving service and verify it works offline.

What an offline hiking navigation app needs to do

Your phone can determine its position using GPS without cellular service or Wi-Fi. Gaia GPS explains: “Your device does not need an internet connection (cellular or wifi) to provide GPS data to the app.” That does not mean the map is stored on your phone: map data must be downloaded while you are connected, or you may see a location indicator without the terrain or trail information you need. Before choosing an app, consider the destination’s map coverage and layers, how much area you can save at a useful level of detail, whether you need routes or waypoints offline, the membership required for downloads, and the storage and battery available on your phone.

Compare the offline hiking apps

App What its documentation says works offline Best fit and limitation to check
Gaia GPS Downloaded maps are stored locally, and routing data is automatically downloaded with offline maps. Users can choose map sources and resolutions. Gaia says its Gaia Topo source has worldwide coverage, while some other sources have limited coverage. Its help page recommends High resolution for hiking and testing in airplane mode. A subscription is required for offline map downloads. Consider it if you want selectable map layers and the documented offline-routing workflow. Confirm the specific source covers your destination and that a subscription is worthwhile. Gaia GPS offline map instructions.
onX Backcountry Saved offline maps can include trails, topo detail, waypoints, lines, and other saved content. Its documentation says the phone’s internal GPS can show your location on a saved map, and that tracking, waypoints, and lines can be used offline. The app offers a “Go Offline” check. Higher resolution provides more detail over a smaller area; lower resolution covers more ground. Consider it for backcountry route planning and saved map tools. Check the area and resolution before downloading: detail and coverage trade off against each other. These are product-documentation claims, not independent comparative test results. onX Backcountry offline maps.
AllTrails Plus and Peak members can download maps while connected. The maps are stored locally and accessed in the iOS or Android app; AllTrails describes loading a downloaded map in Navigate and recording activity. Consider it if you already use AllTrails trail maps and want offline access to them. The cited instructions do not establish area-wide download flexibility or map-layer depth comparable with the other apps. AllTrails offline map instructions.

Which app makes sense for your trip?

For a U.S. backcountry route

Compare the actual map layers and saved-area tools each app offers for your destination. Check that the map shows the features you will use, such as terrain detail and trails, and that your intended route and nearby alternatives fit inside the offline area at an adequate resolution. The documentation does not establish a universal winner.

For a known trail

If your main need is to follow a familiar route, AllTrails may suit you if you already use its trail maps and have a Plus or Peak membership. Download the map and route information before departure; offline access depends on having saved the map in the app.

For international hiking

Verify local coverage and map-source availability for the specific country and route. Gaia GPS says its Gaia Topo source has worldwide coverage, but that does not establish that every map source, trail, or level of local detail is available everywhere. The cited information does not compare coverage country by country for these apps.

Download and verify your maps before departure

  1. Connect to Wi-Fi or mobile data. Open the app and select the map source you intend to use. Map downloads cannot be assumed to exist just because the app displays your GPS position.
  2. Save the full area you may need. Draw or select an offline area that contains your route and reasonable room for a detour. Include relevant map layers, the route, and any waypoints or other content you expect to use.
  3. Choose a useful resolution. More detail can mean a smaller saved area and greater storage use. Gaia recommends High resolution for hiking; onX describes the detail-versus-area trade-off. Check the app’s download size and your phone’s available storage.
  4. Wait for the download to finish. Do not leave service until the app indicates the saved map is ready.
  5. Test offline access. Gaia recommends testing in airplane mode. onX offers a “Go Offline” check. With connectivity disabled, open the map and verify the location indicator, route, and intended zoom levels are available.
  6. Keep the phone usable. Start with a charged device and consider a power bank. Carry a paper topographic map for the area and a compass as backup, and learn how to use them before relying on them.

Offline maps are not emergency communication

GPS positioning without cell service is not a phone call, internet connection, or emergency SOS. The cited app documentation does not establish that Gaia GPS, onX Backcountry, or AllTrails provides satellite messaging or a rescue service. A satellite messenger or beacon is a separate equipment category to assess for your route, conditions, and safety plan; no device guarantees coverage or rescue. Gaia GPS’ Backcountry Navigation Checklist includes a printed map kit and batteries for a phone, GPS, or satellite beacon.
