Best OBS Settings for Streaming Prerecorded Lectures 24/7 on YouTube

Use OBS Media Source or VLC Video to loop prerecorded lectures, then tune encoder, bitrate and network settings for a more reliable YouTube stream.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a prerecorded lecture, start with OBS Studio’s Media Source set to Loop if you have one file, or VLC Video with Loop Playlist for a sequence. A sensible starting profile for slide-based lectures is 1080p at 30 fps, H.264, CBR at 14 Mbps, a 2-second keyframe interval, AAC stereo at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz, sent over RTMPS. These are settings to test—not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming: your computer and sustained upload connection must handle them continuously.

Choose the OBS source that matches your lecture

Loop one lecture file

  1. In OBS, add a scene if needed, then select Sources → + → Media Source.
  2. Name the source, select the lecture file, and enable Loop.
  3. Confirm the video and audio play in the OBS preview. OBS Media Source supports common formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

Loop several lectures as a playlist

  1. Install VLC before adding the source. OBS requires 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS.
  2. In OBS, select Sources → + → VLC Video and add the lecture files to its playlist.
  3. Enable Loop Playlist, then confirm the files play in the intended order and the transition between them behaves as expected.

For either setup, avoid unnecessary scene switching. A Media Source can be configured to restart when it becomes active; if a source is hidden or made inactive, its playback behavior depends on its source settings. Check the OBS guide for the relevant controls.

Set YouTube’s encoder profile in OBS

YouTube Help recommends RTMPS, CBR and a 2-second keyframe frequency for live encoders; do not exceed 4 seconds. H.264 is a broadly compatible choice. YouTube also supports H.265 and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS live streaming, and automatically transcodes live streams to make multiple output formats available. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for the current guidance.

Starting settings for a typical lecture

OBS or stream setting Starting choice Why or when to change it
Output resolution and frame rate 1920×1080 at 30 fps A practical starting point for slides and speech. Use the source’s appropriate size and frame rate; static slides generally do not need 60 fps.
Video encoder H.264 A broadly compatible baseline. Your available encoder options depend on your computer and OBS installation.
Rate control CBR YouTube’s recommended rate-control mode for this setup.
Video bitrate 14 Mbps at 1080p30 YouTube’s H.264 recommendation. Reduce it if your sustained upload connection cannot carry it reliably.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
Audio AAC, stereo, 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz YouTube’s recommended stereo audio settings; verify the lecture speech is clear.
Ingest protocol RTMPS YouTube’s recommended protocol for this encoder workflow.

In OBS, configure the stream encoder’s rate control, bitrate and keyframe interval in the streaming output settings; select the video encoder and audio settings available in your OBS version. In Settings → Video, set the output (scaled) resolution to the size you intend to send. OBS defines this as the resolution sent to the stream. Exact encoder labels can vary by operating system and available hardware.

Use a lower profile if 1080p30 is not stable

H.264 output YouTube-recommended video bitrate When it may fit
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps Use if the connection and encoder sustain it during an extended test.
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps Use only when the source benefits from 60 fps and hardware and upload capacity support it.
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps A reasonable step down when 1080p30 is not sustainable.
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps Relevant for motion-heavy material; 60 fps can place more load on the system.
480p at 30 fps 4 Mbps A lower-bandwidth option if higher profiles remain unstable.

These are YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations, not measurements of your connection. Its official table includes additional resolutions and minimums; select the row for your codec, output resolution and frame rate. See YouTube Help.

Match resolution, encoder and bitrate to your setup

Resolution and frame rate

Set the output resolution to the intended stream size, rather than assuming the source file’s resolution is the right output. For mostly static slides, 30 fps is a reasonable efficiency-oriented starting point; it is not a YouTube requirement. OBS warns that 60 fps can be more taxing than 30 fps. Choose 60 fps only when the lecture content benefits from it and your system can sustain the additional workload.

Encoder and computer load

Use OBS’s Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard to get an initial configuration based on hardware resources and network conditions, then test with the actual lecture and scene. A computer meeting OBS’s system requirements is not automatically capable of every encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene combination. Hardware encoders can move encoding work off the CPU, but quality and compatibility vary by hardware generation and platform; there is no universally best encoder. See the OBS hardware encoding guide and OBS system requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Upload capacity

Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain—not merely one it reaches during a brief speed test. OBS describes dropped frames as a network issue between the computer and the ingest server; an unstable connection or a bitrate that is too high can cause them. Lower the bitrate or output resolution if they recur. OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide explains the symptoms and checks.

Connect OBS to YouTube and test the stream

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and obtain its stream key through the live-stream setup. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and connect or enter the stream key as appropriate for the account and OBS version. Treat the key like a password; do not share or publish it.
  2. Set the encoder profile described above, then start a private or unlisted test stream where your account’s YouTube options allow it. Check that the lecture loops or advances through the playlist, and listen for intelligible audio.
  3. Watch YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health while the test runs. Check for dropped frames in OBS and confirm the computer, network and source playback remain stable over an extended period.
  4. Enable OBS Automatic Reconnect in its Advanced settings. This can help after a connection interruption, but it does not guarantee continuous operation of the computer, playback, network or YouTube service.
  5. Only rely on the setup for a long broadcast after testing the complete workflow. OBS and YouTube recommend testing and monitoring; neither promises uninterrupted 24/7 service.

OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends checking the Audio Mixer meters to verify audio. YouTube’s encoder guidance also emphasizes testing and monitoring stream health.

Keep the lecture content and stream eligible

Use lecture recordings and other media you have the right to stream. A live loop does not grant permission to use copyrighted music, video clips, slides or other material included in a recording. Review YouTube’s current live-stream and copyright rules for your account and content before broadcasting; eligibility and enforcement can depend on YouTube’s policies and the rights involved. A continuous stream also does not by itself establish that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization requirements or reused-content standards.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
Dropped frames or unstable stream health Upload instability or bitrate beyond sustained capacity Lower bitrate, then resolution if needed; check the connection and monitor dropped frames during an extended test.
Lecture stops instead of repeating Loop is disabled or the wrong source type/control is in use For one file, enable Loop on Media Source. For multiple files, use VLC Video and enable Loop Playlist.
VLC Video is missing from Sources VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS Install VLC; pair 64-bit OBS with 64-bit VLC.
No lecture sound or speech is too quiet Source audio is absent, muted or too low Check the OBS Audio Mixer meters and monitor a test stream; verify the source file itself has audible audio.
Encoding struggles or the computer becomes overloaded The chosen resolution, frame rate, encoder or scene exceeds available system capacity Try the Auto-Configuration Wizard, reduce output demands, and compare hardware versus software encoding on the actual system.
Stream does not recover after a brief interruption Automatic Reconnect is off, or the outage affects more than the stream connection Enable Automatic Reconnect and test recovery. It cannot keep a powered-off computer, failed network or unavailable service online.

For 24/7 use, test the full setup for an extended period and check stream health rather than treating a successful short test as proof of long-term stability.
