For a low-motion sleep ambience stream, start with OBS set to H.264, CBR, 1080p at 30 fps, a 10 Mbps video bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval. Use stereo AAC audio at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz, send the stream over RTMPS, and leave at least 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. If your computer or connection cannot sustain that setup reliably, try 720p30 at 8 Mbps. These are YouTube’s published recommendations and a practical baseline—not a promise that any computer or connection will run unattended without interruption.

YouTube lists the video bitrates and keyframe guidance in its live encoder settings. Its audio guidance lists AAC or MP3 support over RTMP/RTMPS and recommends 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz in the advanced settings. The figures are platform-published recommendations, not a special preset for sleep ambience. A still image or subtle animation may not need 1080p30, and YouTube transcodes incoming streams into playback formats, so viewers may see different available qualities.

Choose 1080p30 or 720p30 for your setup
Use 1080p30 when the complete setup sustains it
1080p30 is a reasonable starting point if your artwork benefits from the extra detail and your encoder and upload connection remain stable with the full scene running. The 10 Mbps figure is YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrate for that format. Audio and other network traffic also consume bandwidth, so do not treat 10 Mbps as the total connection requirement.
Drop to 720p30 when stability margin is more important
720p30 at YouTube’s recommended 8 Mbps H.264 video bitrate is a sensible fallback if the higher setting causes dropped frames or the connection lacks headroom. The trade-off is less visual detail; whether that matters depends on the ambience artwork. There is no universal OBS performance advantage established for one resolution across different computers, so compare both on the machine that will actually run the broadcast.

Configure OBS and connect it to YouTube
- Prepare the YouTube live event. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and retrieve its stream key and server details. Treat the stream key like a password: keep it private, and reset it in YouTube if it is exposed. YouTube interface labels can change, so use the live-control-room fields shown for your event.
- Set the video canvas and output. In OBS, open Settings → Video. Set the base (canvas) resolution to match the source/layout you are preparing and the output (scaled) resolution to 1920 × 1080 for the starting point, or 1280 × 720 for the fallback. Set Common FPS Values to 30.
- Choose the encoder and rate control. Open Settings → Output and select Advanced output mode if needed to expose encoder controls. In the Streaming section, choose an H.264 encoder available on your system, set Rate Control to CBR, set the video bitrate to 10000 Kbps for 1080p30 or 8000 Kbps for 720p30, and set Keyframe Interval to 2 seconds. Encoder names and available options vary by OBS version and hardware; use an H.264 option and test it on the actual computer. Do not set a keyframe interval longer than four seconds.
- Set audio output. In the Streaming audio settings, choose AAC if available, stereo channels, a 128 Kbps bitrate, and 44.1 kHz sample rate. Confirm the ambience mix is audible but not clipping, and check for unintended silence, abrupt loop transitions, or audio that stops while the image continues.
- Use secure transport and add the key. In Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service if available, select RTMPS where the server choice is exposed, and enter the server and stream key for the event. Never publish the key in a screenshot or stream overlay.
- Build and inspect the scene. Add the permitted image or video source and ambience audio, verify the loop point, and ensure the scene does not reveal private desktop content if a source fails. Licensing for the specific recording, music, image, or animation must be confirmed separately; encoder settings do not grant broadcast rights.
- Run a complete test before the overnight broadcast. Start a private or unlisted test event if appropriate, then review it from a viewer’s perspective. Check stream health, picture, audio, and transitions with the full scene active—not just an empty OBS preview.
Check upload bandwidth and reduce connection risk
YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit the available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving a 20% margin. Its streaming tips state: “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” For a 10 Mbps video stream, that means planning for at least 12 Mbps of usable upload capacity before accounting for other simultaneous uploads; actual conditions can fluctuate, so more margin is prudent. Apply the same calculation to the total stream bitrate, including audio.
- Measure upload speed at the time and place you expect to stream, preferably while other household or office devices are using the network as they normally would.
- Check that competing uploads, cloud backups, or other traffic will not consume the margin. A speed-test peak is not proof that bandwidth will remain available overnight.
- Use a reliable network. A wired Ethernet connection is an optional way to avoid some wireless variability, not a YouTube requirement or a guarantee against outages.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators during operation. If the stream reports connection problems, reduce the output bitrate or resolution, or address the network bottleneck before relying on it for long sessions.
Plan for a 24/7 broadcast’s archive and reliability limits
A 24-hour stream is longer than YouTube’s documented 12-hour threshold. YouTube Help says, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all,” and notes that DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. The live broadcast may continue even when a complete automatic archive is unavailable, so do not promise viewers a full replay.

If you need a recording, plan a separate local archive and verify that recording files remain intact and continue growing during the stream. YouTube’s live-stream tips recommend checking local archive file integrity and file growth, as well as testing encoder failover. A local recording requires enough storage and a plan to manage large files; it does not make an interrupted live broadcast continue automatically.
OBS running continuously is also dependent on the computer, operating system, power, and network. A static or looping scene does not prevent crashes, updates, power loss, or connection drops. Test the full setup for the duration you expect to use it and make a recovery plan; YouTube’s general guidance does not specify watchdog or operating-system settings that guarantee unattended 24/7 operation.

Troubleshoot common stream problems
YouTube reports a weak or unstable connection
Check whether total bitrate exceeds sustainable upload capacity or the network is busy. Reduce bitrate or switch from 1080p30 to 720p30, then retest under realistic network use. Preserve the recommended 20% headroom rather than aiming at the speed-test maximum.
OBS shows dropped frames or viewers see buffering
Separate network drops from rendering or encoding lag in OBS statistics. Network drops point toward bandwidth or connection instability; rendering or encoding lag points toward the computer or selected encoder. Reduce output demands and retest. There is no single encoder choice or resolution that is best for every computer.

The audio is silent, clipped, or out of sync
Check the active audio source, OBS mixer level, mute state, and playback from the YouTube viewer side. Lower levels if peaks clip, confirm the loop contains audio throughout, and run another test before leaving the stream unattended.

The stream stops after a restart, disconnect, or power interruption
Confirm OBS is still running, the event is still active in YouTube Studio, and the stream key and server selection are correct. Restore the connection and restart the broadcast as needed; a repeated scene cannot itself reconnect an unavailable computer, power supply, or home internet connection.
The live stream has no complete replay
For broadcasts exceeding 12 hours, YouTube may not capture the stream and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable. Use a separate local recording plan if a full archive matters, and verify the recording while it is being made rather than assuming a finished replay will exist.
