For a 24/7 lecture recording in OBS, prioritize recoverable files, an encoder your computer can sustain continuously, enough storage for your retention period, and a full-length test. Start with MKV, then remux to MP4 if your editing or upload workflow needs it. OBS’s published encoder values are starting points—not a guarantee that a particular computer or capture setup will run without interruption.

Set up OBS for reliable lecture recording

These directions describe OBS Studio’s recording controls; exact encoder choices and labels vary by OBS version, operating system, and hardware. No single bitrate, resolution, or storage figure fits every lecture setup. Choose based on your source material, computer, recording duration, and how long you need to keep the files.

Choose a recording-safe format

  1. In OBS, open Settings > Output and select the Recording section. Set the recording path to a drive with enough available space for the planned recording and retention period. OBS’s Standard Recording Output Guide explains the recording controls.
  2. Set Recording Format to MKV. OBS recommends MKV for recordings that may end without a graceful stop: an interruption is less likely to corrupt the entire recording than with a conventional MP4 workflow. MKV also supports the audio and video encoders OBS uses.
  3. After stopping the recording, use OBS’s remux function to create an MP4 copy if an editor or upload service requires MP4. Remuxing changes the container without re-encoding the video. Confirm that the resulting file plays before deleting or moving the MKV.

MP4 or fragmented MP4/MOV may better suit some editing and upload workflows, but compatibility depends on the codecs and the software involved. OBS’s Audio/Video Formats Guide discusses container trade-offs. For a long unattended capture, favor recoverability first and convert afterward if necessary.

Select recording quality and encoder

In Settings > Output, choose Output Mode: Simple for fewer controls, or Advanced when you need recording settings independent of streaming settings. In Simple mode, OBS describes High Quality as high quality with a medium file size. Indistinguishable Quality can improve quality while increasing file size and load on weaker hardware. Same as stream reuses stream settings; a separate recording quality or encoder can use additional computer resources.

Encoder Starting settings listed by OBS What to keep in mind
NVENC CQP 16–23; keyframe interval 2; preset P5; High Quality tuning; two-pass quarter-resolution multipass; High profile; look-ahead off; adaptive quantization on; B-frames 2 Lower CQP values mean higher quality and larger files. Check that the options are available in your OBS version and GPU.
x264 CRF 16–23; keyframe interval 2; veryfast preset; High profile Lower CRF values mean higher quality and larger files; x264 uses CPU resources.

These are documented baselines, not a certified 24/7 configuration. Test them with the actual lecture source and machine. If encoding overload appears, reduce the workload or choose an encoder the computer can sustain rather than assuming a preset will work unattended.

Match resolution and frame rate to the lecture

Set the base canvas to match your capture sources, then choose an output resolution appropriate to the intended recording or stream. OBS recommends matching output resolution and frame rate to the desired output. A lecture with slides, a presenter, and little motion may be suitable at 30 fps, but test legibility and motion with your material; OBS notes that 60 fps can be substantially more taxing than 30 fps. Higher resolution and frame rate also increase storage and processing demands.

  • No Lag, No Delays: Ultra-low latency keeps your video and audio perfectly in sync, just like it should be
  • Your iPad, Now a Pro Field Monitor: Preview your shots in real time on an iPad with USB-C

There is no defensible universal lecture bitrate from the available setup details. Resolution, frame rate, encoder, quality setting, motion, audio, and destination requirements all matter. Use the selected quality or encoder controls as a starting point and judge the result from a test recording at normal viewing size.

Estimate storage before recording unattended

Measure file growth using your actual settings, then multiply the observed amount per hour by the number of hours you will record and retain. Leave free space for other system needs and monitor the destination drive during long runs. If OBS stops recording when the volume fills, the remaining lecture will not be captured.

OBS’s Recording Encoder Presets Guide reports that its Lossless preset produces around 7 GB per minute. That figure applies to that preset, not ordinary recording settings; it illustrates why lossless is unsuitable for many continuous recordings. See the Recording Encoder Presets Guide for its preset descriptions.

Test the whole capture chain

  1. Confirm the lecture source is visible and that microphone, system audio, and any other required audio sources register in OBS’s mixer.
  2. Record a short sample, stop normally, and play it back. Check slide text, presenter framing, audio levels, synchronization, and whether the chosen format opens in your intended workflow.
  3. Run a longer test under normal operating conditions. Watch OBS’s status indicators and system load, and confirm the output drive has room. A brief test cannot establish that a particular system will run indefinitely.
  4. Test recovery deliberately: stop OBS normally and verify the file, then consider what happens if power or the application is interrupted. MKV is intended to reduce the risk of losing the entire recording after an ungraceful stop, but it does not restore footage that was never written.
  5. For a live broadcast as well as local recording, test the stream separately against the platform’s requirements. Local recording and network delivery are different failure paths.

Troubleshoot common 24/7 recording problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Recording stops or the file is incomplete Drive ran out of space, OBS or the computer stopped, or the output path became unavailable. Check free space, path, permissions, and OBS logs; use MKV for future captures and test that the destination remains available.
Video stutters or encoding overload appears The chosen resolution, frame rate, quality, or encoder exceeds what the computer can sustain. Test a lower workload, such as 30 rather than 60 fps, or try a suitable hardware encoder. Make one change at a time and inspect a new sample.
Recording is much larger than expected High-quality or lossless settings, high resolution/frame rate, or a separate recording configuration increases data use. Measure actual file growth and adjust the quality setting or retention plan. Do not extrapolate the lossless figure to other presets.
Live stream drops frames while local recording continues Network delivery to the remote ingest server is unstable, or the connection cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Diagnose the connection to the selected ingest server and available upload capacity. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide notes that dynamic bitrate can reduce bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, at the cost of quality; it does not fix the underlying connection problem.
Remuxed file will not open in an editor The editor may not support the file’s codecs even if it supports the MP4 container. Check the editor’s codec requirements and test a short recording before relying on that workflow.

Keep a YouTube lecture stream running: copyright and content checks

OBS settings do not grant permission to broadcast lecture material. Before streaming recorded lectures, confirm you have the rights to the video, slides, music, and any third-party material, and follow YouTube’s current live-stream and copyright rules. A stream may be interrupted or restricted if material is claimed or otherwise violates platform rules. Repeatedly broadcasting the same recording does not by itself establish that the content meets platform monetization or reused-content requirements; those are separate platform decisions. Use the copyright safety checklist as a preflight aid, not as a substitute for rights clearance or YouTube’s policies.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a prerecorded YouTube lecture that needs to stay live, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to leaving OBS and a computer running at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; it loops uploaded videos from the cloud. It does not broadcast from a camera or stream to platforms other than YouTube.

  • Nothing at home has to stay on, so an offline laptop or home connection does not stop the cloud stream.
  • One flat price per slot covers uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card; it includes one free day per account.

Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for the service details, or start the free day.
