Kalkal beat Japan’s Kotaro Kiyooka 3-3 on criteria. Both Hindustan Times and India Today identify Kiyooka as the reigning Olympic champion. India Today says Kalkal advanced because he scored the bigger move.

Final: Tajikistan’s Abdulmazhid Kudiev
Kudiev led 9-2 before Kalkal’s comeback produced the 10-9 final score. The reports do not provide an official bout sheet or further scoring breakdown.
What the gold means for India
India Today called this India’s first wrestling gold of the 2026 Asian Games and Kalkal’s first major senior title. It also reported that he became the third Indian to win the Asian Games men’s 65kg freestyle title, following Yogeshwar Dutt in 2014 and Bajrang Punia in 2018. India Today reported that Kalkal, 23 and from Haryana, had won U23 World Championships gold in 2025 and Asian Championships gold in 2026. It also recounted that flooding and travel disruption delayed his arrival for the 2024 Asian Olympic qualifier until weigh-in had begun, costing him the chance to compete there.

Before the event, Hindustan Times quoted coach Shako Bentinidis as saying Kalkal had strong defensive ability but needed to attack more, adding that his talent should allow him to dominate opponents. That assessment makes the final’s shift from a substantial deficit to a one-point win especially striking, without changing the result’s measurable facts.
