For a mostly static lecture, start with OBS at 1920×1080, 30 fps, H.264, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and a sustained upload bitrate your connection can maintain. YouTube’s current guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as recommended for H.264 1080p30. Those are ingestion guidelines, not a guarantee that your computer or connection can run continuously at that rate.
Recommended OBS settings for 1080p30
| Setting | Starting point | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Canvas and output | Use a canvas matching your lecture layout or source; set output to 1920×1080 | A matching canvas avoids unnecessary scaling. Scale to 1080p only when the source or layout requires it. |
| Frame rate | 30 fps | Usually suitable for slides, a speaker, and other low-motion lecture content. OBS notes that 60 fps can be more taxing than 30 fps. |
| Encoder | H.264 | A broadly compatible baseline for YouTube live ingestion. |
| Rate control | CBR | Provides a constant target bitrate for the live stream. |
| Video bitrate | Start within YouTube’s 5 Mbps minimum to 14 Mbps recommended range for H.264 1080p30; use only a rate your upload can sustain | The recommended figure is platform guidance, not a stability guarantee. Test under realistic conditions. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds | YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3; stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps | YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists these audio parameters. Clear, continuous speech is more important than a particular microphone model. |
| Advanced video | For SDR: progressive scan, square pixels, Rec. 709, 8-bit; YouTube’s recommended parameters also include two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC | These are YouTube’s listed advanced encoding parameters. |
These recommendations reflect OBS Project and YouTube Help guidance current at access on October 3, 2026. YouTube’s encoder guidance did not display a publication date in the reviewed material.

Set up the stream in OBS
- Build the scene. In OBS, add the lecture sources you need—such as slides, a camera, or a media source—and arrange them in the canvas. Use a canvas matching the source or layout when practical; set the output resolution to 1920×1080 if you need 1080p delivery.
- Set the frame rate. Choose 30 fps for a typical lecture. Consider 60 fps only if the content needs smoother motion and your encoder and upload connection can sustain the added load.
- Configure streaming output. In Settings > Output, select H.264 if available, set rate control to CBR, enter a sustainable bitrate, and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. OBS labels can differ by encoder, so use the equivalent controls exposed by the encoder you selected.
- Configure video. In Settings > Video, set the output to 1920×1080 and the frame rate to 30 fps. Match the base canvas to your layout or source when possible; otherwise, choose an appropriate scaling method and check that slides and text remain legible.
- Configure audio. Set stereo audio to 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps with AAC or MP3 where those options are available. Listen to the actual lecture voice for clipping, room noise, dropouts, or silence before relying on it for a long broadcast.
- Connect YouTube. In YouTube Studio’s live-stream setup, copy the stream key and enter it in OBS’s stream settings, or connect an account using the option OBS provides. Treat the key like a password; anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to the channel. Use RTMPS where supported.
- Run a representative test. Test the actual scene, voice, motion, encoder, and network for long enough to expose problems. Check YouTube’s stream health and messages, and verify audio and text from a viewer’s perspective before leaving the broadcast unattended.
- Save the tested configuration. OBS profiles can keep a tested YouTube output and stream configuration separate from other setups. Save the profile after testing so a later change does not silently replace the settings you rely on.
Choose an encoder and bitrate your setup can sustain
CBR bitrate and upload capacity
YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for H.264 1080p30 live ingestion. Start by testing a rate within that range against the upload connection available to the streaming computer. The actual connection must sustain the stream, and a configuration that works briefly may still fail over a longer run. No universal upload-headroom figure is established by the cited guidance; measure stability on the network and at the time of day you will use.
If stream health indicates instability, lower the bitrate and test again rather than assuming the recommended maximum is appropriate for your connection. If you cannot maintain even a viable rate reliably, address the network or choose a lower output target instead of repeatedly reconnecting at the same unsustainable settings.

Hardware versus software encoding
OBS says hardware encoding can offload work from the CPU and is generally recommended for performance when supported. However, older-generation hardware encoders can deliver lower image quality at the same bitrate. The best encoder and preset depend on the actual computer; select a supported option that remains stable in a sustained test. The cited guidance does not establish a universal preset or hardware choice for every system.
When 60 fps is worth considering
A lecture made mainly of slides and a talking head usually does not need 60 fps. OBS notes the higher frame rate can be more taxing than 30 fps. If the lecture includes fast motion, test 60 fps with the same production computer and connection before switching a 24/7 stream; do not assume settings validated at 30 fps will remain stable.

Keep a 24/7 broadcast running reliably
Plan for interruptions
Enable OBS automatic reconnect and test recovery by interrupting the network in a controlled test. YouTube recommends testing before going live and checking stream health and messages. The official guidance reviewed here does not specify universal reconnect retry values for a 24/7 production, so verify what your OBS version and chosen encoder actually do rather than relying on an assumed retry schedule.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA single OBS computer and internet connection remain dependencies: a power loss, operating-system restart, OBS failure, or extended network outage can stop the broadcast. If continuity is essential, plan what happens when those dependencies fail; the cited OBS and YouTube guidance does not specify a complete external failover design.

Preserve an archive separately
Do not rely on YouTube to archive one continuous 24/7 event. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a YouTube archive is important, divide the schedule into events shorter than 12 hours and verify the resulting archives. Keep a separate local recording when you need a copy independent of YouTube’s archive behavior.
OBS recommends MKV for local recording because an ungraceful stop does not corrupt the entire file. A local recording still needs adequate storage and a computer that remains available for the recording duration. Check available disk space and confirm that recording is enabled before the broadcast begins.

Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports unstable stream health or dropped frames | The upload path cannot sustain the configured bitrate, or the network is intermittent | Check OBS and YouTube stream-health messages; test the connection under realistic conditions, then lower the bitrate and repeat the sustained test. |
| OBS struggles or the computer becomes heavily loaded | The selected encoder or frame rate is too demanding for the machine | Test a supported hardware encoder to offload CPU work, or reduce the frame rate to 30 fps. Compare sustained stability and image quality; older hardware encoders may look worse at the same bitrate. |
| The picture looks poor despite a stable connection | The bitrate may be too low for the content, or the selected encoder may produce lower quality at that bitrate | Check that the output is 1920×1080 and H.264, then test a higher sustainable bitrate within YouTube’s guidance. Compare encoders on the actual hardware instead of assuming all hardware encoders are equivalent. |
| The broadcast does not reconnect after a network interruption | Reconnect behavior may not be enabled, or the interruption exceeds what the setup recovers from | Enable OBS automatic reconnect, conduct a controlled interruption test, and confirm that YouTube shows the stream as healthy after recovery. |
| The 24/7 broadcast is missing or incomplete in YouTube archives | The event exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold | Use separate events shorter than 12 hours when YouTube archives are required, and keep a local MKV recording for an independent copy. |
| Viewers report silence, distorted speech, or intermittent audio | The audio source, levels, device, or continuous capture may be faulty | Monitor a representative test, confirm stereo 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps where available, and inspect the microphone path and OBS audio meters for clipping, silence, or dropouts. |
| OBS connects to the wrong broadcast or cannot authenticate | The wrong YouTube stream key may be in use, or the key may have changed | Compare the key configured in OBS with the current key in YouTube Studio; replace it securely if needed and test before resuming unattended operation. |
