Best OBS Quality Settings for YouTube Live (2026 Guide)

A reliable OBS setup depends on your codec, computer, and upload connection. Use YouTube’s current bitrate targets as a starting point, then test and adjust for the symptom.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single best OBS preset for every YouTube live stream. Start with the resolution and frame rate your computer can render and encode reliably, then set a sustainable bitrate for YouTube’s current recommendation for your codec. For a practical baseline, use CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, SDR Rec. 709 at 8-bit, and test with representative audio and motion before you go live.

Recommended OBS settings for YouTube Live

The values below are a starting point, not a guarantee that your computer or internet connection can sustain a stream. YouTube’s bitrate figures are recommended video ingest targets; they are not hard minimums. The codec choices and labels available in OBS depend on your system and encoder.

OBS area Starting setting Why it matters
Settings → Video Choose an Output (Scaled) Resolution and common FPS your computer can maintain; use 30 fps if 60 fps is unstable. Resolution and frame rate affect both the outgoing picture and the computer’s rendering and encoding load.
Settings → Output → Streaming Advanced output mode; select an available supported encoder, then use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube specifies CBR, recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
Settings → Output → Streaming Set video bitrate according to the resolution, frame rate, and codec table below, subject to sustainable upload capacity. H.264 has different recommended targets from AV1 or H.265/HEVC.
Audio 128 kbps stereo is YouTube’s listed platform-specific baseline. Check that the intended microphone and desktop mix are selected and that levels do not clip.
Advanced color For SDR, use Rec. 709 and 8-bit. HDR is a separate workflow, not a generic quality switch.

OBS calls the source composition area the Base (Canvas) Resolution and the outgoing stream dimensions the Output (Scaled) Resolution. They do not have to match: scaling can reduce the delivered resolution without rearranging the scene layout.

Choose a bitrate for your codec and output

These are YouTube’s recommended video ingest bitrates, in Mbps, on its official live encoder guidance accessed October 3, 2026. They are recommendations for YouTube Live ingestion, not a promise of stable delivery on any particular connection.

Resolution and frame rate AV1 or H.265/HEVC H.264
2160p (4K) at 60 fps 35 Mbps 50 Mbps
2160p (4K) at 30 fps 30 Mbps 42 Mbps
1440p at 60 fps 24 Mbps 34 Mbps
1440p at 30 fps 15 Mbps 21 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
480p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 4 Mbps
360p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 4 Mbps

For example, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for 1080p60 H.264 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60 AV1 or H.265/HEVC. Do not select a codec just to chase the lower figure: it must be available in OBS on your system and supported by your chosen workflow. If you cannot sustain the recommended target, lower the bitrate and, if needed, the output resolution or frame rate. A speed-test peak is not evidence that your connection can hold that rate throughout a broadcast.

Set up OBS step by step

  1. Choose your output target. In OBS, open Settings → Video. Set Base (Canvas) Resolution for your scene composition, then choose Output (Scaled) Resolution for the stream. Select a common FPS. Use 60 fps when smooth motion is important and your system can keep up; if it cannot, OBS recommends trying 30 fps.
  2. Select an encoder and codec. In Settings → Output, select Advanced output mode if you need independent streaming and recording controls. Under the streaming settings, choose an encoder available on your computer and a codec supported by YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS live guidance: H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1. Availability and performance vary by hardware and software. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU load, but its capabilities and output quality vary by encoder generation and system; test your own setup rather than assuming one encoder is best for every PC.
  3. Set rate control and keyframes. In the streaming encoder controls, use CBR and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends 2 seconds and specifies a maximum of 4 seconds. Exact field labels vary with OBS version and the selected encoder.
  4. Enter the video bitrate. Use the YouTube table above for your resolution, frame rate, and codec, provided your upload connection can sustain it. If it cannot, lower the bitrate to a stable level and reduce output demands if necessary.
  5. Configure audio and color. Confirm the correct microphone and desktop audio sources in OBS, check their levels, and avoid clipping. Use 128 kbps stereo as the YouTube-specific audio baseline. For SDR, match YouTube’s listed Rec. 709 and 8-bit settings. Treat HDR as a distinct workflow: YouTube recommends H.265 for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR in the cited settings.
  6. Connect OBS to your YouTube stream. Use the stream key from your YouTube live setup in OBS’s stream configuration. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it, and replace it if you believe it has been exposed. Check YouTube’s live preview or status before starting the public broadcast.
  7. Run a realistic test. Test with audio and video movement similar to the actual event, not just a static scene. Check stream health, audio sync and level, motion quality, and whether the intended resolution is being sent. YouTube advises testing before a live stream and monitoring its stream-health messages.
  8. Save alternate setups if needed. OBS profiles save stream, video, and output settings. Keep a conservative profile for a weaker connection or heavier scenes and a higher-resolution profile for conditions that can reliably support it.

How to choose between 1080p, 1440p, and 4K

  • 1080p60: A useful target when smooth motion matters, such as gaming, and both the computer and upload connection can sustain the required output. YouTube’s recommended video ingest target is 17 Mbps for H.264 or 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265.
  • 1080p30: A lower-load option when 60 fps is unstable or unnecessary. YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 or 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265.
  • 1440p or 4K: These can deliver more detail, but demand more encoding capacity and substantially more upload bandwidth. Choose them only when your complete setup can sustain the selected codec’s target. YouTube notes that 2160p live streams do not offer its low-latency optimization option.

There is no universal quality ranking between H.264, H.265, and AV1 for every computer. The practical choice is the codec OBS exposes on your hardware, supported by your YouTube workflow, that you can encode reliably at an appropriate bitrate.

Fix common OBS and YouTube Live problems

Symptom Likely area to investigate What to try
OBS reports encoding lag The encoder is not keeping up with the selected output. Try a lighter encoder preset or an available hardware encoder, then reduce output resolution or frame rate if needed. Hardware options vary by system.
OBS reports rendering lag or GPU overload Scene compositing or another GPU-heavy task, such as a game, may be competing with OBS. Simplify demanding scenes and reduce output demands. Changing bitrate alone does not address rendering load.
Dropped frames or unstable ingest The upload path may not sustain the selected bitrate. Check connection stability and available upload capacity. Select a sustainable bitrate; do not treat a CPU or encoder change as the only fix for a network problem.
Viewers report buffering, but OBS shows no dropped frames The viewer’s network or device and delivery conditions may contribute. If broader accessibility is the priority, lower bitrate or output demands. YouTube transcodes live streams, but that does not guarantee every viewer can receive a high-bitrate rendition smoothly.
The stream appears capped at a lower resolution The source output, ingest settings, or YouTube processing and transcoding may be involved. Verify OBS’s Output (Scaled) Resolution and stream health, then allow for YouTube’s processing behavior. The timing is not fixed by the official guidance cited here.
Audio is missing, distorted, or out of sync The selected OBS audio sources, levels, or synchronization need checking. Confirm the intended microphone and desktop mix, inspect levels for clipping, and check sync during the test stream. There is no universal mixer configuration for every setup.

Copyright and content checks before going live

Use video and audio you have the right to broadcast. A live encoder preset does not grant permission to use music, video, or other copyrighted material, and technical compliance does not determine whether a channel meets YouTube’s content policies. Review YouTube’s current rules for your content and channel before scheduling a stream. StreamNeo also provides a copyright safety checklist to help review a planned broadcast; it is not a substitute for rights or policy review.
