For a steady sleep-sounds track, start with no filters and add only the processing that solves an audible problem. Use noise suppression only for mild unwanted noise, a compressor only for loud excursions, and a gate or expander cautiously because each can reduce quiet parts of the sound bed. If you use a limiter, place it last. OBS does not publish a sleep-stream preset or settings validated for this use, so listen to the quietest and loudest passages and test the complete stream before going live.
Choose filters by the problem you hear
OBS offers filters for different signal conditions; a longer chain is not automatically better. First identify the source producing the audio—such as a media source or captured audio device—then add any needed filter to that source or device. OBS says filters can be added to sources and audio devices. OBS filters guide

| Filter | Use it when | Sleep-audio caution |
|---|---|---|
| Noise suppression | The source has mild background or white noise. | Listen for changes to wanted ambience; stronger Speex suppression can distort other sounds. |
| Gate | You want to cut background noise when a voice is not speaking. | It can cut or alter quiet intervals in continuous audio; OBS frames it around speech. |
| Expander | You want to reduce signal below a threshold, with a smoother alternative to a fixed gate. | It still reduces quiet audio, so audition the quietest passages. |
| Compressor | The source has loud excursions above a threshold. | It may not be needed for a consistently leveled ambient track. |
| Limiter | You need a ceiling to control peaks. | A peak cap is not a complete loudness target; OBS says it belongs last. |
What each OBS filter does
Noise suppression: remove mild noise, not wanted ambience
OBS describes noise suppression as a way to remove mild background or white noise, including environmental noise such as computer-fan noise. The guide says it is generally not effective against large amounts of background noise. OBS identifies RNNoise as higher quality but more CPU-intensive than Speex; this is OBS’s characterization, not a quantified benchmark or a sleep-audio comparison. OBS Noise Suppression Filter
Use suppression only when there is noise worth removing. Compare the filtered and unfiltered sound, paying attention to the wanted ambient texture as well as the noise. The guide’s default method is RNNoise, but that default is not proof it is the right choice for every source.

Gate and expander: take special care with quiet passages
A noise gate cuts off background noise when a speaker is not speaking and uses separate open and close thresholds. That speech-oriented behavior may be a poor match for a continuous bed with naturally quiet intervals. OBS’s published gate defaults are a close threshold of -32.00 dB, an open threshold of -26.00 dB, 25 ms attack, 200 ms hold and 150 ms release; these are software defaults, not tested sleep-stream settings. OBS Noise Gate Filter
An expander reduces signal below a threshold. OBS describes it as a possible gate alternative whose adjustable ratio can make opening and closing smoother than a fixed gate. Its documented defaults include a 2.00:1 ratio and -40.00 dB threshold; the guide gives 5–10 ms attack and 50–120 ms release as recommended starting ranges. None is established as a best setting for sleep audio. OBS places an expander after compression or other effects and before a limiter. OBS Expander Filter

Compressor: control excursions, not steady audio by default
A compressor reduces louder signal above a threshold. OBS describes it chiefly for a source, typically a microphone, that sometimes becomes much louder, and recommends placing it near the beginning of the chain. Its published defaults are a 10:1 ratio, -18.00 dB threshold, 6 ms attack and 60 ms release. These are defaults, not recommended sleep-stream targets. If your ambient source has no problematic loud excursions, the documentation does not establish a need for compression. OBS Compressor Filter

Limiter: the final peak-control filter
A limiter prevents signal from exceeding its threshold, which can help avoid clipping and distortion. OBS says it should be the last filter in the chain. The default threshold is -6.00 dB and default release is 60 ms; treat those as software defaults, not a validated target for sleep content. Set and verify the ceiling for your intended output. A limiter controls peaks; it does not, by itself, set overall loudness. OBS Limiter Filter
Build and check a cautious filter chain
- Find the audio source. In your OBS scene, identify the media source, captured device, or other source carrying the sleep audio. Open that source’s filters and work there rather than applying processing blindly across unrelated audio.
- Listen without processing first. Check a quiet section, a typical section and the loudest section. If the recording already sounds clean and even, leave the chain empty.
- Add only the filter that addresses a real issue. For mild noise, try suppression. For loud excursions, consider compression. Try a gate or expander only if low-level signal really needs reducing and quiet ambience can be preserved.
- Use placement guidance where OBS provides it. OBS places a compressor near the beginning, an expander after compression or other effects, and a limiter last. It does not give a universal placement rule for every filter in a sleep-sounds chain.
- Audition again with processing enabled. Check whether quiet details remain, transitions sound natural, noise is reduced without damaging wanted sound, and peaks stay within the limiter ceiling.
- Test the scene and stream before launch. OBS recommends testing stream operation and scene setup. The cited overview does not prescribe a 24-hour endurance test or provide an uptime guarantee. OBS streaming overview
Troubleshoot common audio problems
- Quiet ambience vanishes or pulses: a gate or expander may be reducing low-level signal. Raise or remove the processing, then listen again to the quietest passage.
- The sound becomes dull, watery or otherwise altered after suppression: suppression may be affecting wanted content. Disable it or try a less aggressive approach; OBS specifically warns that stronger Speex suppression can distort other sounds.
- Peaks still sound distorted: inspect the source and output behavior, and verify the limiter is last and set appropriately. A limiter is a ceiling, not a substitute for checking the signal path.
- There is still substantial background noise: OBS says suppression is generally not effective with large amounts of noise. Fix the source of the noise if possible rather than expecting the filter to remove it.
- The stream stops or disconnects: audio filters are not a stream-recovery or uptime feature. Test the configured stream before launch; the cited OBS material does not establish that filters prevent interruptions.
Run OBS yourself or keep the stream in the cloud
OBS is the do-it-yourself option when you want to configure and operate the stream from your own computer. The OBS filter documentation explains audio processing, not 24/7 reliability; it provides no endurance procedure or guarantee. The actual chain should follow the source’s audible needs, and the completed scene and stream should be tested before launch.
