The encoder can run on your computer, which must remain on and connected, or in the cloud. Before going live, verify your channel, confirm you have rights to the video and audio, and test the stream in YouTube Studio.
What you need before starting
- A folder of sleep-sound videos that you own or have permission to use, including both the visuals and the audio.
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube also requires live streamers to be at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
- A way to encode and send the video to YouTube: streaming software on a computer, or a cloud service that runs the stream remotely.
YouTube does not establish a minimum computer specification or upload speed for this setup. Test the actual files and connection you plan to use rather than assuming a particular machine or network will sustain a continuous broadcast.

Prepare the sleep-sound videos
Check your rights first
Sleep music, ambient recordings, nature sounds, stock footage, and looping visuals can all be copyrighted. YouTube scans livestreams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and issue a warning; if the content remains, it may interrupt or terminate the broadcast. Even if you have a license, the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license does not by itself guarantee that an automated interruption will not occur. Read YouTube’s guidance on live-streaming copyrighted content.

Collect the files you intend to play and decide on a repeatable order. Check that each file has the intended picture and sound, and that transitions between files will not introduce silence or an abrupt change that is unsuitable for sleep. The precise playlist-building steps depend on the encoder or cloud service you choose; confirm that it can loop the sequence you prepare.

Choose where the stream runs

OBS describes its streaming connection as running directly from your computer to the streaming service. That means a local setup depends on the computer and its connection staying available; it is not a YouTube feature that keeps playing after the encoder stops. Neither approach guarantees an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast, so plan to test and monitor it.
Set up YouTube Live and connect the encoder
- Confirm eligibility. Verify the channel and check that it has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube says a live-stream strike prevents streaming for 14 days; do not try to bypass an active restriction by switching to another channel. Review YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open the live-streaming controls and create or schedule a stream. Select the visibility and audience settings that fit your channel and content.
- Connect your encoder. Copy the stream key and server details shown for the broadcast into your encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Do not publish it or include it in a screenshot.
- Set up the loop in your encoder. Add the sleep-sound videos in the desired sequence and enable repeat or looping. Exact controls vary by software and version; check that the encoder advances from one file to the next and returns to the start of the sequence.
- Start an unlisted test. Start sending the feed and wait for the preview in YouTube Studio. Check picture, sound level, transitions, and stream status before making the broadcast public.
- Verify access. Open the watch page from the channel and check it on a mobile device as well as your computer. YouTube recommends checking the preview and confirming that viewers can reach the stream before launch. Its encoder setup and troubleshooting tips also advise monitoring stream quality.
Keep a local 24/7 stream running
For the do-it-yourself route, leave the computer, encoder, and internet connection operating for the duration of the broadcast. OBS notes that dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate the available link cannot sustain. Watch YouTube Studio’s stream health and the encoder’s status; test with your own files and connection because the available guidance does not establish a universal minimum bandwidth, computer specification, or uninterrupted archive limit.

- Keep the computer connected to power and prevent sleep settings from stopping the encoder.
- Check the broadcast periodically for video, audio, and connection interruptions.
- Keep an eye on dropped frames. If they rise, reduce the load or bitrate to a level your connection can sustain, then verify the preview and stream health again.
- Have a recovery plan for power loss, internet failure, software crashes, and YouTube interruptions. A local encoder cannot restart itself if the computer is unavailable.

Troubleshooting a continuous broadcast

Rules and archive limits to keep in mind
All live content must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Eligibility and restriction rules can change, so check YouTube Help before launching. The available YouTube guidance does not establish a maximum continuous broadcast length or how long a very long live archive remains available; do not assume the replay will be retained indefinitely. If preserving the content matters, keep your original media files and confirm the archive settings for your stream.
