For Node.js transactional email, Amazon SES, Twilio SendGrid, and Postmark each document ways to suppress future messages to particular addresses—but they organize that state differently. SES offers account- and tenant-oriented controls, SendGrid distinguishes global and unsubscribe-group state, and Postmark attaches suppression management to Message Streams. The practical choice depends on how your application separates tenants and message types, and how you need to inspect and update suppression records.
This is a comparison of documented capabilities, not a ranking of deliverability, price, or support. The sources cover three providers rather than the entire market, and they do not establish a complete Node.js SDK comparison.

What to compare when choosing a Node.js transactional email provider
“Suppression” can mean different things. A provider may prevent sending after a hard bounce or spam complaint, record a recipient’s unsubscribe preference, or apply a restriction only to a particular tenant, group, or message stream. Those mechanisms are not interchangeable: an unsubscribe is a preference, while a bounce or complaint is an email-delivery event.

Before choosing a provider, map your application’s boundaries to the provider’s model. Ask which messages share suppression state, whether your application can inspect and change that state through an API, and how events make their way back to your system. Do not treat a provider’s ability to bypass a suppression as a routine way to deliver around it.

How the three providers scope suppression
| Provider | Documented suppression boundary | Inspection and changes | Documented reasons or related state |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon SES | Account and tenant scopes are available for suppression configuration; configuration sets can specify suppression options. Tenant lists are region-specific. AWS also maintains a separate global suppression list. | Customer-managed account and tenant controls are distinct from the AWS-managed global list, which customers cannot query directly. See AWS documentation on SES SuppressionOptions, tenant-level suppression lists, and the global suppression list. | Configuration can use BOUNCE and COMPLAINT as suppression reasons. The global list is AWS-managed. |
| Twilio SendGrid | Global unsubscribes and unsubscribe groups provide different scopes. Group suppression applies to messages tagged with that group. | SendGrid documents adding and removing addresses through its UI or API. The suppression-group API documents adding addresses to a group’s suppression list. | Documentation also describes bounces and spam reports as suppression causes. Bypass controls can ignore suppression state. |
| Postmark | Suppression records are attached to a Message Stream. | The Suppressions API supports viewing, creating, and deleting suppressions. | Documented reasons include HardBounce, SpamComplaint, and ManualSuppression. |
The scope labels are not equivalent across providers. A group, tenant, or stream can help represent an application boundary, but you still need to confirm which boundary receives each message and which suppression rules are checked for that send.
Amazon SES: separate account, tenant, and global suppression behavior
SES API v2 documents BOUNCE and COMPLAINT as suppression reasons, with account or tenant scope available through suppression options for configuration sets. AWS describes tenant-level suppression lists as intended for multi-tenant sending. Its documentation also describes precedence: configuration-set settings override tenant and account settings, and tenant lists are region-specific. See SuppressionOptions and Using tenant-level suppression lists in Amazon SES.
Do not assume that all SES suppression state is visible through one customer query. AWS says its global suppression list is managed in the background and cannot be queried directly by customers. If SES accepts a send addressed to an address on that list, it suppresses the message and surfaces a permanent suppressed bounce. That global list is different from account- or tenant-level lists that customers configure.
For a multi-tenant Node.js service, the important design question is how you assign each send to its intended tenant and configuration set. Check the documented scope and precedence for your actual configuration rather than assuming a tenant-scoped send also checks account-level state.

Twilio SendGrid: distinguish global unsubscribes from group unsubscribes
SendGrid’s Advanced Suppression Management describes global unsubscribe and group unsubscribe choices, alongside other suppression causes such as bounces and spam reports. Its Suppressions documentation covers adding and removing addresses through the UI or API. The distinction matters: a group-level unsubscribe is not automatically equivalent to a blanket global unsubscribe.
The suppression-group API specifies that an address on a group’s suppression list will not receive messages tagged with that group. In your Node.js application, decide whether categories such as account alerts, receipts, and product updates map cleanly to unsubscribe groups, then verify which group each message is tagged with. Do not presume that all transactional categories should share one group or that a global unsubscribe has the same scope as a group preference.
SendGrid documents controls for bypassing suppressions and cautions against bypassing them except when necessary. Treat access to those controls as sensitive: a bypass can override the guard your application expects to protect recipients from unwanted or otherwise suppressed messages.
Postmark: manage suppressions within Message Streams
Postmark’s Suppressions API is associated with a Message Stream and supports viewing, creating, and deleting suppression records. Its documented reasons include HardBounce, SpamComplaint, and ManualSuppression.

Message Streams give you a concrete boundary for organizing different email workflows. Verify which stream your Node.js code selects for each message and what suppression state applies to that stream in your configuration. Stream separation by itself does not establish a deliverability or compliance outcome.
How to make the choice for your Node.js architecture
- Many independent tenants: investigate SES tenant-list scope, region constraints, configuration-set overrides, and the exact suppression checks for your send path.
- Recipient preferences by message category: examine SendGrid’s global and group unsubscribe distinction, and design message tagging so the group state means what your application intends.
- Separate email workflows into streams: examine Postmark’s Message Stream selection and stream-level suppression operations.
- Need customer-visible suppression management: confirm that the specific kind of record you need is queryable and mutable. SES’s AWS-managed global list is not directly queryable by customers.
- Need event handling in your application: verify how the provider surfaces bounce and complaint events and how your system will correlate them with sends and update its own state.
For any provider, evaluate the chosen SDK or API against your existing Node.js stack. Test webhook delivery, retries, idempotency, event mapping, and suppression updates in your own environment; the cited product documentation does not establish setup time, integration quality, or library superiority. Postmark’s sending documentation identifies an official TypeScript SDK, supports message-ID correlation for webhook events, and documents a batch endpoint for up to 500 well-formed messages per API call. These are implementation details to assess against your workload, not evidence that one provider is best for every Node.js application. See Postmark’s sending API documentation.
What the documentation cannot decide
The cited sources establish product capabilities, not a head-to-head comparison of inbox placement, price, or support quality. They also do not establish that one provider is universally best, or that any particular suppression boundary guarantees compliance or better delivery. SES separately warns that excessively high bounce and complaint rates may jeopardize sending, but its monitoring documentation here supplies no threshold figure. See Monitoring your Amazon SES sending activity.
