Best Nintendo Switch Controller Settings for Game Boy Advance Games

Start with D-pad movement, B on B, A on A, and L/R on the matching shoulders. Here is how to choose a controller, remap buttons and restore defaults.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most Game Boy Advance games on Nintendo Switch, start with the original relationship: D-pad for movement, B for the GBA B action, A for the GBA A action, and L/R for the shoulder functions. This keeps the labels shown by the game meaningful while preserving a familiar face-button arrangement on a modern controller.

If a game or grip makes one action awkward, remap only that action first. Nintendo’s GBA controls guide lets you view the original-to-Switch mapping, while system-level button mapping lets you build an accessibility or comfort layout. An active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership is required for the Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics library.

The best starting layout

The safest default is a one-to-one translation of the original handheld controls:

GBA function Recommended Switch input Why it works
Directional movement D-pad It preserves the discrete directions and diagonal control expected by most GBA games.
GBA B action B The on-screen B prompt still points to the button carrying the same letter.
GBA A action A Confirm, jump, attack or interact prompts remain easy to interpret.
GBA L L Shoulder functions remain on the corresponding shoulder.
GBA R R Shoulder functions remain on the corresponding shoulder.
Pause and system functions + or − as shown by the application These controls are handled by the Nintendo Classics application rather than by a GBA face-button label.

Use this profile before experimenting. It minimizes relearning and makes an instruction such as “press A” or “hold L” agree with the button you actually press. The recommendation is a practical layout choice, not a universal comfort test: hand size, controller model and the individual game can change what feels best.

The letter relationship is especially useful when you move among several titles. A platformer may use A to jump and B to attack, while an RPG may use A to confirm and B to cancel. Keeping those letters in their original positions means the game’s tutorial messages, pause-screen diagrams and printed instructions remain immediately understandable. It also gives you a reliable baseline for diagnosing a problem: if a control feels wrong with the default layout, you can tell whether the issue is the game, the controller’s shape or your grip rather than an unfamiliar remap.

Check the GBA control guide before remapping

Nintendo’s official support flow for the Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics library shows how the original controller buttons correspond to the current controller and explains where controls can be changed. In the GBA library, press ZL and ZR to open the relevant controls or user-guide flow, then review the game’s displayed prompts before changing anything. See Nintendo’s Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics support article for the library and control-help instructions.

This check matters when a title uses a button in an unusual way, when a menu has a separate shortcut, or when you are unsure whether an action is assigned to A, B, L or R. The guide is also a quick way to return to the intended layout after testing a custom setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the distinction between the two kinds of settings clear. The in-application help view explains what the game expects; the Switch’s mapping screen changes which physical control sends that input. A game can continue to display “A” even after you assign the A function to another physical button. That is why checking the guide first prevents accidental mental translation later.

Choose the controller that suits the way you play

All three options below can use Nintendo’s supported button-mapping system where applicable. The practical differences are grip, portability and whether the controls are integrated into the console.

Controller Best use Strength Trade-off
Nintendo Switch Pro Controller Docked or tabletop play Full-size grip, conventional controls and official remapping support It is a separate purchase and is less convenient for handheld play.
Joy-Con pair Travel, multiplayer or flexible setups Official remapping support and easy separation Smaller controls and a less traditional D-pad feel.
Nintendo Switch Lite controls Handheld-only play Controls are integrated and always available. There is no detachable-controller option.

Nintendo documents that these supported configurations can be remapped; it does not publish a universal comfort ranking. If precise platforming or diagonal movement is your priority, spend most of your evaluation time with the D-pad and the way your chosen controller reaches it. If you play menu-heavy RPGs, shoulder reach and dependable A/B confirmation may matter more than the size of the grip.

For docked or tabletop sessions, the Pro Controller is the optional hardware choice to consider when a larger grip and conventional layout are more comfortable. It does not make a game’s controls objectively better, and it is an additional purchase, so judge it against the way you already play rather than buying it solely for a remap. Joy-Con are practical when you need to pack light, separate the controls for multiplayer or change hand positions. Their smaller controls can require more precise thumb placement. Switch Lite owners have no detachable alternative, so the useful adjustment is how the console is held and which supported inputs are assigned in system settings.

When comparing hardware, test the same short sequence on each controller if possible: diagonal movement, repeated A presses, a simultaneous direction-and-shoulder command and a menu confirmation/cancel cycle. This exposes the differences that matter for GBA games without assuming that a larger controller or a split pair will suit every player.

Profiles for different kinds of GBA games

Default profile: preserve the original labels

Keep D-pad movement, B on B, A on A, L on L and R on R. This is the right first profile for games whose prompts already feel clear. It also makes it easier to move between several titles without remembering a different face-button convention for each one.

Platformer and action profile

Retain movement on the D-pad. Test an A/B swap only if repeated jumps, attacks or other face-button actions are uncomfortable with your grip. Some players prefer the frequently pressed action on the left face button; others find the original letter relationship easier to remember. Change one face button at a time, play a short section, and keep the swap only if it improves reach without making prompts confusing.

Leave L and R on the shoulder buttons by default. If a game uses one shoulder action constantly, moving that single action can reduce reach for a particular hand position, but it also makes the displayed L or R instruction less literal. Treat this as a targeted comfort change rather than a wholesale redesign.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For demanding platforming, do not change movement and face buttons simultaneously. The D-pad determines direction and timing, while A or B usually handles the repeated action. If both feel different at once, you cannot tell whether missed inputs come from directional control or the remap. A short, low-risk section with repeated jumps or attacks is a better test than a difficult boss encounter.

RPG and menu-heavy profile

Preserve A as confirm and B as cancel whenever the game allows it. Consistent confirmation is more valuable than making the four face buttons symmetrical because menus often teach you a confirm/cancel rhythm. Keep L and R available for party, inventory, map or other shortcuts, and make sure you can reach both shoulders without shifting your grip.

RPGs also reward a stable layout between battles and menus. A swap that makes a combat command easier may make dialogue, item selection or a back-out command feel backwards. If a title uses a shoulder button for cycling tabs or party members, test that shortcut repeatedly rather than judging only the face buttons.

One-handed or accessibility profile

Use the mapping screen to move the most frequently used action to the easiest reachable button. You can disable an unused input if accidental presses are a problem. Keep a known reset path and write down the normal layout before testing so you can restore it quickly. A one-handed arrangement is personal: prioritize the buttons you can operate reliably rather than preserving a theoretical original position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with the action that limits play most often, not with a complete redesign. Moving one frequently used command can leave other prompts understandable and reduces the chance that two actions compete for the same reachable area. Check that the replacement button is available on your controller and is not one of the system controls Nintendo excludes from remapping.

How to change Switch button mapping

Nintendo’s system procedure is:

  1. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
  2. Select Controllers and Sensors.
  3. Select Change Button Mapping.
  4. Select the controller shown on the left, then choose Change.
  5. Select the button you want to alter and assign its new function.
  6. Select Back, then Done to confirm.

These labels match Nintendo’s published instructions in its Switch controller button-mapping guide. The feature supports Joy-Con (L), Joy-Con (R), the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller and Nintendo Switch Lite controls. Most buttons can be configured, but Power, Volume, Home and Sync are excluded.

Because custom configurations are saved on the Switch system, the change can affect what you do in other games with that controller. The mapping screen is therefore a system-level tool, not a guarantee that each GBA title stores an independent profile. If you change A and B for one play session, plan to restore the normal configuration before starting another game that relies on the standard labels.

Check the controller shown on the left carefully before confirming. A remap made for one Joy-Con or for the Pro Controller does not solve a problem if you then play with a different device. After selecting Done, test the physical buttons in the game; the system does not automatically rewrite the prompts or tutorials inside the application.

A careful remapping workflow

1. Record the baseline

Before changing anything, note D-pad, A, B, L and R in the default arrangement. Open the GBA control/help flow with ZL and ZR if you need to verify a prompt. This gives you a reference when a new layout feels wrong.

2. Change the smallest possible set

Start with one face-button swap or one frequently used shoulder action. Changing every button at once makes it difficult to tell whether the problem was reach, muscle memory or a game-specific prompt. Leave movement alone unless the D-pad itself is the issue.

3. Test the action in context

Use a save or a low-risk area to repeat the action that prompted the change: several jumps in a platformer, a short attack sequence, or opening and closing a menu. Test both directions of a swap if you are unsure. The correct setting is the one you can execute consistently while still understanding the game’s instructions.

4. Check secondary commands

After a remap, revisit menus and shoulder shortcuts. A face-button change can improve action reach while making confirmation or cancellation less predictable. A shoulder change can help a frequently used command while making another shortcut harder to reach.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Save a recovery note

Keep the default A/B/L/R relationship written down or take a reference photo of the mapping screen. If another player uses the console, restore the standard configuration first or tell them that the controller has a custom layout.

6. Restore or label the profile

When you finish the GBA session, either return to the standard mapping immediately or leave a clear note for the next person using the console. Since the configuration is stored at the system level, forgetting this step can make an unrelated game appear broken. Repeat the same six-step check whenever you change controllers.

When an A/B swap makes sense

An A/B swap is the most common experiment because the two buttons handle many repeated actions. It can help when your thumb naturally rests closer to the opposite button, when a game asks for rapid presses, or when your preferred grip makes one side easier to reach. It is less useful when the game constantly displays A for confirm and B for cancel and you depend on those labels.

Do not assume that a swap improves every title. A layout that feels fast in an action game can make an RPG’s menu rhythm feel backwards. If you play several GBA games, use the original relationship as your shared baseline and reserve the swap for a specific comfort problem.

  • PRISMATIC LED LIGHTING: Customize the look of your controller to match your mood with the full color range and four lighting modes.
  • MOTION-CONTROLS: Enhance your gaming experience to play the way the developer intended.

Remember that the swap changes the physical result, not the text shown by the game. After swapping, “press A” still means the game’s A input, even though that input may now be reached with the physical B button. If translating every prompt becomes tiring, the comfort gain is probably not worth the loss of consistency.

Improving shoulder-button access

L and R often carry secondary actions, menu shortcuts or context-sensitive commands. Keep them on the corresponding shoulder first so the physical location matches the prompt. If one shoulder is used far more frequently, test moving only that function to a button you can reach without shifting your hand. Confirm that the replacement does not interfere with an essential A, B or menu command.

On a Pro Controller, the full-size grip can make simultaneous D-pad and shoulder use feel steadier for tabletop sessions. Joy-Con users may value separation or portability more than a conventional D-pad feel. Switch Lite players cannot detach the controls, so the practical adjustment is the system mapping itself and the way the console is held.

Shoulder remaps deserve extra caution because L and R are often held rather than tapped. Test a sustained press, a quick tap and a press while moving. A replacement that works for a single shortcut may be awkward for a command that must be held during movement.

Common problems and fixes

The game still feels wrong after remapping

Return to the GBA control/help flow with ZL and ZR and compare the displayed mapping with your system configuration. You may have changed a different controller from the one currently in use, or changed more buttons than intended. Restore the baseline, then repeat the test with one alteration.

Prompts no longer match your actions

Prompts are based on the game’s button labels, while a custom system layout changes what a physical button does. If “press A” now means pressing the physical B button, the game has not changed its wording; your mapping has. Either restore A and B or accept that you must translate every prompt mentally.

Another game has unexpected controls

Button mapping is saved on the Switch system. Open System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Change Button Mapping, select the affected controller and restore the standard configuration, then choose Back and Done. Reapply the custom GBA arrangement only when you are ready to use it again.

You cannot find a button in the mapping screen

Power, Volume, Home and Sync are excluded from remapping. Choose an available gameplay button instead, and avoid assigning a critical command to a control you may need for system navigation.

The remap seems to disappear

First verify that you selected the same controller currently connected and that you completed the final Back and Done steps. If you switch from a Joy-Con pair to a Pro Controller, each device may have a different configuration. Recheck the selected controller before changing the game’s layout again.

Accessing the GBA library

The Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics library requires an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. If the library or its control guide is unavailable, check the membership on the Nintendo Account using the console. The requirement is stated in Nintendo’s support documentation: Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics support.

Once the application is available, use its own control/help view to understand the intended layout, then use the system mapping procedure for comfort or accessibility changes. The application guide and the system settings serve different purposes: the first explains the game’s controls, while the second changes the physical-button assignment.

A quick decision checklist

  • Need the most faithful feel? Use D-pad movement, B on B, A on A, L on L and R on R.
  • Repeated action is hard to reach? Test a single A/B swap or move only the frequently used shoulder action.
  • Menus feel inconsistent? Restore A as confirm and B as cancel.
  • Playing one-handed? Move the most important action to the easiest reachable supported button and disable an unused input if accidental presses occur.
  • Choosing hardware? Favor the Pro Controller for docked or tabletop full-size grip, Joy-Con for separation and travel, or Switch Lite for integrated handheld controls.
  • Switching to another game? Restore the standard system mapping because custom configurations are saved on the console.
  • Unsure what a button does? Open the GBA control/help view with ZL and ZR before making a system-level change.
  • Need the library? Confirm that the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership is active.

The strongest general-purpose setup remains the original GBA relationship. Customize only where a specific game, grip or accessibility need gives you a clear reason, and keep the control/help screen and reset path available whenever you experiment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best Switch controller settings for GBA games?

Start with D-pad movement, B for the GBA B action, A for the GBA A action, and L/R on the matching shoulders. This preserves the original labels and is the easiest layout to understand across multiple games.

How do I remap A and B for Game Boy Advance on Switch?

Open System Settings, choose Controllers and Sensors, select Change Button Mapping, choose the controller and select Change. Assign the new functions, then choose Back and Done. Test the swap in a low-risk game area and remember that prompts will still display the game’s original A and B labels.

Should I use Joy-Con or a Pro Controller for GBA games?

Use the Pro Controller for a larger grip in docked or tabletop play, and Joy-Con when portability, separation or multiplayer flexibility matters. Nintendo supports remapping on both; comfort depends on your grip and the game.

Can I make GBA controls feel like the original handheld?

Yes. Keep D-pad movement, B on B, A on A, L on L and R on R. Use the GBA control/help view, opened with ZL and ZR, to verify the intended relationship.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I change controls in the GBA Nintendo Classics app?

Use the app’s control/help view to see the original mapping, then use System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Change Button Mapping for physical-button changes. The app explains the controls; system settings perform the remap.

Will a custom GBA mapping affect other Switch games?

It can. Custom configurations are saved on the Switch system for the selected controller, so restore the standard mapping before playing a game that expects normal labels.

Which Switch buttons cannot be remapped?

Nintendo excludes Power, Volume, Home and Sync. Most other supported controller inputs can be configured through the mapping screen.

Do I need a subscription to play GBA games on Switch?

An active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership is required to access the Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics library.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Use D-pad, B, A, L and R in their original positions first. Remap only the action that causes a real reach or accessibility problem, test it in context, and restore the system mapping when you finish.
