There is no single best mouse DPI or pointer-speed value for every strategy game. The right setup is the one that lets you click small targets reliably and move the camera comfortably, with consistent behavior across your mouse, Windows, and the game.
Which mouse settings affect strategy games?
Mouse control is a combination of separate layers. Changing one does not necessarily change the others, and a game may handle mouse movement differently from the Windows desktop.
- Mouse DPI or CPI: The movement scale reported by the mouse sensor. Available settings depend on the mouse. A DPI number is not the same thing as a Windows pointer-speed slider position.
- Windows pointer speed: A desktop pointer setting. In Windows 11 or Windows 10, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse (Windows 11) or Settings > Devices > Mouse (Windows 10), then adjust the pointer-speed control. Microsoft documents the current paths and the Enhance pointer precision option in its mouse settings guidance.
- Enhance pointer precision: A Windows option that changes pointer behavior. Microsoft describes switching it on “to make the pointer more accurate when the mouse is moving slowly.” That is a description of the desktop setting, not a universal recommendation for strategy games.
- Game input and camera controls: A title may offer its own mouse sensitivity, raw-input behavior, edge-scroll speed, or camera inertia. These controls can be independent of the Windows pointer settings.
Why Windows settings may not control the in-game cursor the same way
Windows pointer speed and pointer acceleration apply to ordinary pointer movement through the Windows input path. Microsoft explains that Windows applies pointer acceleration to WM_MOUSEMOVE data and documents raw mouse input as a separate path that games can use. As a result, a game using raw input may not respond to Windows pointer settings in the same way as the desktop. See Microsoft Learn’s documentation on high-definition mouse movement and raw mouse input.
Do not assume that a change in fullscreen mode, windowed mode, or resolution should behave identically. If movement changes between modes, check the game’s input options and current support guidance before concluding that the Windows pointer slider is responsible.

Separate pointer sensitivity from camera scrolling
Moving the pointer and moving the game camera are different tasks. Some strategy games let you adjust camera scrolling independently, so raising mouse sensitivity is not necessarily the best fix for a camera that feels slow or difficult to control.
Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition
The Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition accessibility documentation identifies separate Scroll Speed and Scroll Inertia controls. It explains that Scroll Speed controls how fast the screen moves when scrolling by keyboard or mouse, while Scroll Inertia controls the acceleration applied after screen scrolling begins. Those are camera-movement controls, not a universal mouse-DPI recommendation. See Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition accessibility features.

How to find a comfortable setup
Use a short, repeatable test in the game you actually play. Record your starting settings and change one control at a time; otherwise, it is hard to tell which adjustment helped.
- Record your baseline. Note the mouse’s current DPI or CPI if known, the Windows pointer-speed position, whether Enhance pointer precision is on, and the game’s relevant mouse and camera settings.
- Choose a Windows pointer behavior. Adjust pointer speed or Enhance pointer precision only if desktop movement is part of the problem. Microsoft describes Enhance pointer precision as helping pointer accuracy during slow movement; whether it suits your play is something to judge in your setup.
- Inspect the game controls. Look for mouse sensitivity, raw input, camera or edge-scroll speed, and scroll inertia. Their names and availability differ by game. If the camera feels wrong but clicking feels fine, try the camera controls before changing the mouse’s overall movement scale.
- Test real tasks. Select small units and interface buttons, move the camera to screen edges, and return the pointer to familiar targets. Judge both click reliability and whether pointer travel fits your display and available mouse space.
- Keep or revert the change. If the adjustment improves one task but makes another unreliable, restore the baseline and try a different control. Save or note a configuration you can reproduce.
What counts as “best” for your setup?
Compare configurations by how they work in your game, rather than by a headline DPI number. These are practical checks, not a standardized scoring test:

- Comfortable travel: Can you move across the display without awkwardly running out of mouse space or making excessively large movements?
- Predictable camera movement: Does scrolling stop and start in a way you can control?
- Consistency: Does pointer behavior feel acceptable both on the desktop and in the game’s input mode?
- Easy recovery: Can you restore the previous settings or switch back to a saved profile?
Do you need an adjustable-DPI gaming mouse?
Not necessarily. An adjustable-DPI mouse can make it convenient to change sensitivity or save profiles, but the cited product documentation does not establish that buying a new mouse improves strategy-game performance. Razer’s Spectre Master Guide describes a mouse designed for StarCraft II and RTS players; it is a historical guide, not evidence of current availability or a current purchase recommendation. If your existing mouse lets you control units and camera movement comfortably, a new mouse is not required by the settings advice here.
