Best Modems: How to Choose One That Works With Your Internet Plan

The best modem is the one your provider approves for your exact plan. Compare current cable modem candidates, speed support, Ethernet needs, and whether you need a separate router.

There is no single best modem for every household: the right choice is a cable modem approved by your internet provider and rated for your subscribed speed tier. Check your provider’s current compatibility list before buying; then decide whether you want a modem-only device and a separate Wi-Fi router, or an all-in-one gateway.

How to choose a modem that will work for you

  1. Confirm your connection type. The candidates below are cable modems. Do not assume one will work with a different type of service, such as fiber or DSL.
  2. Check your provider’s current compatibility lookup. Use the lookup for your provider and, where available, your service address. Xfinity advises customers to check both device compatibility and speed support before purchase: Xfinity’s approved-device guidance. Cox also advises matching a modem to the subscribed plan: Cox’s modem guidance. A retailer’s “works with major providers” claim is not a substitute for provider approval.
  3. Match the modem to your speed tier. Provider approval does not necessarily mean a modem supports every speed tier that provider sells. Verify that the exact model is approved for your plan’s download and upload speeds.
  4. Check the Ethernet connection. Compare the modem’s Ethernet port capability with your plan and the router you intend to use. A fast modem cannot deliver its full potential if another part of the connection is a bottleneck.
  5. Choose modem-only or gateway. A standalone modem requires a separate router for Wi-Fi. An all-in-one gateway combines modem and router functions; neither format is universally faster based on the available provider guidance.
  6. Compare the full cost. Check current local equipment prices and your account’s terms, including any provider equipment charge. Fees and terms vary, so confirm them directly rather than relying on an old price comparison.

Modem candidates to compare

A February 2026 Tom’s Guide comparison names these cable modem candidates. Treat them as a shortlist for checking—not universal winners or evidence of hands-on testing. Specifications below are product-listing figures reported by that guide, not measured real-world throughput; actual speeds depend on the ISP service and the provider’s authorization for your account. Model What the comparison reports What to verify before buying
ARRIS SURFboard S34 DOCSIS 3.1; advertised up to 2.5 Gbps download and 444 Mbps upload in the guide’s product listing. Current provider approval, support for your exact speed tier, and Ethernet compatibility with your router.
Hitron CODA56 DOCSIS 3.1; listed up to 2.5 Gbps download and 1 Gbps upload in the guide’s product listing. Current provider approval, support for your exact speed tier, and Ethernet compatibility with your router.
NETGEAR Nighthawk CM3000 Listed for multi-gig use, with up to 2.5 Gbps download and 1 Gbps upload in the guide’s product listing. Current provider approval, support for your exact speed tier, and Ethernet compatibility with your router.

These advertised capabilities do not guarantee that an ISP will authorize the same speeds on a particular plan or account. Check the provider list for the exact model and your service before ordering.

Do you need a separate router?

Yes, if you buy a modem-only device and want Wi-Fi. The modem connects your home to the cable service; a router creates the local network and provides wireless access. If you already own a router, check that its ports and wireless capabilities suit your plan. For faster plans using a separate router, Cox recommends at least a Wi-Fi 6 generation router: Cox’s modem guidance.

A gateway combines modem and router functions in one device and can reduce the number of boxes. A separate modem and router give you the option to select or replace those parts independently. The provider guidance here does not establish that one setup always performs better, so choose based on your provider’s approved equipment, existing network gear, and preference for a combined or separate setup.

What about DOCSIS 4.0?

Do not assume DOCSIS 4.0 equipment is broadly available or eligible across the United States. Deployment and device eligibility depend on the market and provider. Confirm what your ISP supports at your address before choosing a DOCSIS generation; the named comparison candidates above are not evidence of nationwide DOCSIS 4.0 availability.

When should you keep or replace your current modem?

If your current modem is approved for your provider and supports your subscribed speed tier, changing it is not automatically necessary. Consider a replacement when the device is no longer supported, cannot handle your plan, or you need a feature your current setup lacks. Before buying, check whether the issue is actually the modem: a router limitation, Wi-Fi coverage problem, or service fault can also affect the experience.

Provider device lists can change, and approval may depend on the exact model and plan. Recheck the current list at purchase time, even if a model appeared on an earlier comparison or retailer page.
