Are You Stuck in Analytics 2.0? How to Tell Whether Your Data Drives Decisions

“Analytics 2.0” can mean different things. Here’s how to tell whether your reporting is siloed activity tracking or analysis that informs decisions.

Maybe—but “Analytics 2.0” does not name one universal technology or maturity level. The phrase has been used for different things: a 2013 advertising-measurement framework and, more recently, a learning-platform analytics release from Thirst. The useful question is whether your reporting merely counts activity or helps explain what changed and what to do next.

What does “Analytics 2.0” mean?

In a 2013 Harvard Business Review article, “Advertising Analytics 2.0” describes an approach to measuring advertising through three connected activities: attribution, optimization and allocation. A 2025 Thirst announcement uses the same phrase for its own redesigned learning-platform analytics. Neither usage establishes a universal industry standard.

So first ask what a colleague, vendor or article means by the term. If the discussion is about advertising, it may refer to connecting channel measurement with predictive analysis and resource decisions. If it is about employee learning, it may refer specifically to Thirst’s product. Do not assume that one definition applies to every analytics tool.

How the advertising framework works

Attribution estimates contribution

Attribution is an effort to estimate how advertising elements contribute to an outcome, such as a sale. The HBR framework presents it as a way to understand contributions across advertising, rather than treating each channel’s self-reported results as independently earned revenue.

Optimization explores scenarios

Optimization uses predictive analysis to explore possible outcomes under different choices. In practical terms, it can help a team ask what might happen if it changes a campaign or its mix of resources. The framework describes an analytical activity, not a guarantee that a particular software package includes it or will produce a specific result.

Allocation applies those scenarios to resources

Allocation means distributing resources in light of the scenarios under consideration. The three activities are related: estimates of contribution inform scenario analysis, which can then inform where resources go. The framework does not promise that the estimates are certain or that a tool will make the decision for you.

Why separate reports can give a misleading total

The HBR article illustrates the problem with an example: channel reports claimed $160 million in revenue in total, while the business had generated $110 million. The gap arose because channels duplicated credit for the same revenue. Those figures describe an illustrative case in the 2013 article—not an industry benchmark or a measurement of typical businesses. Read the HBR article, “Advertising Analytics 2.0”.

The lesson is not that every channel report is wrong. It is that adding reports together can overstate results when teams use different attribution rules or claim the same outcome. Before treating a combined total as real, check whether channels use consistent definitions and whether the same conversion can appear in more than one report.

What Thirst means by its 2025 release

In an announcement dated April 22, 2025, learning-platform provider Thirst described its own “Analytics 2.0” release as a way to compare trends over time, drill into teams or content, connect learning activity to business impact and export reports. These are features Thirst attributes to its product; they are not a general description of analytics platforms or independent evidence that the release improves business outcomes.

Thirst CEO Fred Thompson described the redesign this way: “We’ve spoken to our customers about what they wanted to see from their data. We’ve re-engineered the whole experience – so you can get the insights that matter, not just tick boxes for compliance.” That is the company’s stated aim, not independent proof of the product’s results. How to tell whether your analytics are stuck

Judge your reporting by the decisions it supports, not by whether it carries a “2.0” label. Ask these questions about the reports your team actually uses:

  • Are the numbers defined consistently? Confirm that teams agree on what counts as a conversion, an engaged learner or another key outcome, and how credit is assigned.
  • Can you see across channels or teams? Separate views may help a team manage its own work, but decision-makers also need a way to check for overlap and compare activity across the relevant parts of the business.
  • Can you inspect trends and meaningful segments? A total can hide changes over time or differences between teams, content, campaigns or other relevant groups. Check whether you can move from the overall figure to the detail needed to understand it.
  • Does activity connect to an outcome? Counts of clicks, completions or other activity are not by themselves proof of business impact. Look for a clear explanation of how the metric relates to the outcome you care about—and be cautious about treating correlation as causation.
  • Does the analysis inform a next step? A useful report helps someone decide what to investigate, change or fund. If it only records activity, it may serve a compliance or monitoring need, but it is not answering every decision question.

These are practical comparison questions drawn from the advertising and learning-analytics examples, not a published maturity standard. A team can have useful analytics without adopting any particular product or calling its process “Analytics 2.0.”

A practical way to improve the next reporting decision

  1. Name the decision. State what choice the report should inform, such as how to distribute advertising resources or which learning content to investigate.
  2. Define the outcome and its rules. Agree on the measure, time period and attribution approach before comparing results. Note where a single outcome may receive credit in multiple reports.
  3. Compare the relevant views. Bring together the channels, teams or content areas that affect the decision, then inspect trends and segments rather than relying only on a top-line total.
  4. Separate observation from explanation. Record what changed, what the data can support as an explanation and what remains uncertain. Do not present an activity count or a predicted scenario as proof of impact.
  5. Choose an action and a follow-up measure. Make the decision explicit, then decide what result you will check and when. That makes it possible to learn from the action instead of treating the report as an endpoint.

What the phrase cannot tell you

The documented uses do not establish how widespread “Analytics 2.0” adoption is, provide a current independent cross-industry maturity standard or prove a general performance lift. A vendor’s product description and a historical framework can clarify what particular writers mean, but neither justifies treating the label as a benchmark for your organization.

For foundational background on web analytics, O’Reilly lists Avinash Kaushik’s Web Analytics 2.0: The Art of Online Accountability and Science of Customer Centricity, a 503-page beginner-to-intermediate book published in October 2009. It may offer historical foundations, but its age means it should not be treated as a current guide to analytics platforms or APIs. See the O’Reilly book listing.
