For most new factions servers, start with FactionsUUID or SaberFactions as the claim-and-raiding core, then build the server around EssentialsX, Vault, LuckPerms, WorldGuard, and WorldEdit or FastAsyncWorldEdit. Add Dynmap, BlueMap, Pl3xMap, or SquareMap if players need a live territory map. The right choice depends on your exact Minecraft/Paper/Purpur version, the faction mechanics you want, and how much migration and compatibility work you are willing to maintain.
For hosted Minecraft Java deployments, Godlike.Host provides a game panel with SFTP/FTP access, a built-in mod installer and updater, and one-click modpacks to help deploy this plugin stack.

What a factions server actually needs
A factions plugin is not a complete server stack. It normally handles claims, faction membership, power, relationships, and raid rules, while separate plugins provide permissions, economy, protected administrative regions, editing tools, and optional maps. Treating the core as only one layer prevents common problems such as an unprotected spawn, broken chat prefixes, or a map that shows stale claims.
- Factions core: FactionsUUID or SaberFactions for claims, power, faction commands, relationships, and raid behavior.
- Commands and economy: EssentialsX for general commands, kits, signs, and economy features.
- Compatibility layer: Vault to let economy, chat, and permission plugins communicate.
- Permissions: LuckPerms for groups, prefixes, suffixes, and command access.
- Region protection: WorldGuard for spawn, marketplaces, event areas, and other administrative regions.
- Editing: WorldEdit or FastAsyncWorldEdit (FAWE) for large changes to spawn and the world.
- Optional map: Dynmap, BlueMap, Pl3xMap, or SquareMap for a browser-based view of territory.
Before installing anything, write down the Minecraft version, server software (Paper or Purpur), whether the world is new or already populated, and which mechanics are non-negotiable. A plugin that is excellent on one version can be unusable on another if its hooks or bridge plugins have not caught up.

FactionsUUID vs. SaberFactions
These are the two practical starting points in the supplied documentation. Select one as the authoritative factions system; running two competing factions cores on the same world will create command, claim, and data conflicts.
| Decision area | FactionsUUID | SaberFactions |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Administrators who value documented integrations with common utility, permission, economy, protection, and map plugins. | Servers seeking a free, performance-optimized alternative with many built-in gameplay and progression controls. |
| Documented features | Core claim and faction functions, with integrations documented for major companion plugins. | Grace period, alt system, anti-spam, faction upgrades, faction points, command cooldowns, and additional power, member, and redstone upgrades. |
| Named integrations | Dynmap, EssentialsX, LuckPerms, PlaceholderAPI, Sentinel, Vault, and WorldGuard are listed in the official 4.0 documentation. | Vault is identified by setup guidance as a dependency; verify every other hook against the release you install. |
| Version checkpoint | Version 4.0 changed the plugin name and internal naming. Existing extensions and configuration assumptions may need adjustment. | Check the repository’s supported server versions and release notes before updating; do not assume an older build is safe on a newer Paper or Purpur release. |
| Migration effort | Potentially higher when moving to or from older naming conventions or when a bridge must be updated. | Potentially higher if your existing ecosystem expects FactionsUUID-specific commands, data, or hooks. |
| Maintenance approach | Use its documented hooks and test bridges after every core update. | Keep a staging copy and verify performance and upgrade settings before production updates. |
Choose FactionsUUID when integrations are the priority
FactionsUUID is the safer first candidate when your design depends on several established integrations. Its 4.0 documentation explicitly lists hooks for Dynmap, EssentialsX, LuckPerms, PlaceholderAPI, Sentinel, Vault, and WorldGuard, reducing guesswork when assembling the rest of the stack.
There is an important qualification: the FactionsUUID 4.0 documentation says the release changes the plugin name and internal naming. That can affect compatibility with extensions, scripts, permissions, and migration tools written for older naming. The same documentation identifies WorldGuardFactionsBridge 1.3.9, released in August 2025, as compatible with FactionsUUID 4.0. Treat that bridge version as a concrete compatibility checkpoint, not as a guarantee that every future release will work unchanged.

SaberFactions is described by its repository as a free, performance-optimized factions plugin. Its documented feature set is useful for servers that want progression without immediately adding several separate gameplay extensions: grace periods, an alt system, anti-spam controls, faction upgrades, faction points, command cooldowns, and extra power, member, and redstone upgrades.
Those features still need to be tested with your intended rules. Decide how much power players gain, how grace periods interact with raids, whether alt detection is appropriate for your community, and which upgrades should consume money or points. Keep a test world so these settings can be changed without risking live faction data.

Build the supporting plugin stack
EssentialsX: commands, kits, signs, and economy
EssentialsX supplies the familiar server layer: commands, signs, kits, and economy functions. It is usually the component players encounter outside faction commands, so configure its command aliases and economy before opening the server.
EssentialsX documentation makes a critical distinction about protection. Its AntiBuild functionality is not full region protection. Use WorldGuard when you need to restrict building or PvP in a specific region such as spawn. Do not rely on an AntiBuild setting to secure an irregular region or an event arena.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesVault: the compatibility layer
Vault provides the economy, chat, and permission compatibility layer used by many Bukkit-family plugins. Install it before connecting EssentialsX, LuckPerms, or a factions plugin that expects Vault services. If a plugin reports that no economy or permission provider is available, check that Vault is present, the provider is enabled, and the server has been restarted after installation.
LuckPerms: groups and visible identity
Use LuckPerms to define groups such as default, member, moderator, and administrator, then assign the exact faction and utility permissions each group needs. Prefixes and suffixes can be exposed through chat components when the chat plugin and Vault are configured correctly.
Start with least privilege. Give ordinary players faction commands, home and teleport commands that you intentionally allow, and no administrative WorldGuard or editing permissions. Test each group with a disposable account before launch; a permission typo can expose claim bypasses or destructive commands.

WorldGuard: protected administrative regions
WorldGuard is the region-protection layer for spawn and other areas controlled by staff. Typical regions include spawn, a market, an event arena, a tutorial zone, and a temporary build area. Define the regions deliberately and set only the flags you need for building, PvP, interaction, and mob behavior.

Factions claims and WorldGuard regions solve different problems. Factions claims belong to players and change as faction power changes. WorldGuard regions are staff-managed boundaries. Use both, and verify how your selected factions core and any bridge resolve overlapping rules.
WorldEdit or FAWE: safe large-scale editing
WorldEdit is the conventional editing tool for creating and reshaping spawn. FAWE is an alternative designed for faster large operations. Restrict editing permissions to trusted staff, make backups before selections or replacements, and perform heavy edits away from peak player activity. A fast edit is still capable of destroying a large area instantly.
Community setup guidance commonly pairs WorldEdit with WorldGuard: edit the terrain first, then create and protect the finished region. Keep the two plugins on versions compatible with your Paper or Purpur build.
Maps: make territory understandable
A browser map is optional, but it substantially improves a factions server when players need to understand borders, bases, and contested areas. Factions integration documentation lists BlueMap, Dynmap, Pl3xMap, and SquareMap. Select one map renderer, confirm that it can read your factions claims on the versions you run, and decide whether claim information should be public or staff-only.

Map rendering can consume CPU, memory, and storage, especially during a first full render. Render a test area, schedule full renders for low-traffic periods, and check that the map updates after a claim is created, abandoned, or transferred.
Compatibility checklist for Paper and Purpur 1.21+
“Supports 1.21” is not enough information for a reliable deployment. Match the exact Minecraft minor version, the Paper or Purpur build, Java version required by that server build, and every integration or bridge. Compatibility is a stack property: one outdated bridge can break an otherwise current installation.
- Record the target: write the exact Minecraft version and Paper or Purpur build you will run.
- Check each plugin release: confirm the factions core, Vault, LuckPerms, EssentialsX, WorldGuard, editor, and map renderer list that target version.
- Check bridges separately: for FactionsUUID 4.0, verify the WorldGuardFactionsBridge release; version 1.3.9 was documented as compatible in August 2025.
- Read naming and migration notes: FactionsUUID 4.0 changed plugin and internal naming, so inspect permissions, scripts, placeholders, and bridge configuration for old identifiers.
- Install on a staging server: use a copy of the world and configuration, not your only production instance.
- Inspect startup logs: resolve missing dependencies, failed hooks, duplicate commands, and version warnings before inviting players.
- Exercise the critical paths: create, claim, unclaim, transfer, ally, enemy, raid, die, respawn, and leave a faction; then test spawn protection and map updates.
- Back up before promotion: take a world and plugin-data backup after a successful test and before every core or bridge update.
Recommended installation order
- Prepare the server: create a new Paper or Purpur instance, set the target version, and start it once to generate files.
- Install the foundation: add Vault, LuckPerms, EssentialsX, WorldEdit or FAWE, and WorldGuard. Restart and confirm they load without errors.
- Install one factions core: choose FactionsUUID or SaberFactions, restart, and let it create its data files.
- Configure permissions: create LuckPerms groups and grant faction commands to a test rank, keeping administrative commands restricted.
- Configure economy: set EssentialsX currency behavior and confirm Vault exposes the economy provider to the factions plugin.
- Protect staff regions: use the editor to prepare spawn, then create WorldGuard regions and test build, interact, and PvP flags with both staff and ordinary accounts.
- Add a map if needed: install only one of Dynmap, BlueMap, Pl3xMap, or SquareMap initially, then verify claim visibility and update behavior.
- Set faction rules: configure power, claims, raid timing, grace period, upgrades, cooldowns, and relationship rules according to your server design.
- Run a closed test: have several accounts form factions, create allies and enemies, attempt legal and illegal builds, and simulate a raid.
- Document recovery: record plugin versions, configuration changes, backup locations, and the rollback procedure before launch.
Design decisions that affect the player experience
Claims and power
Decide how much territory a new faction can claim, how power is earned or lost, and what happens when a faction falls below the power required to hold its land. Explain these rules in a welcome guide. Players should know whether deaths reduce power, whether offline members count, and how abandoned claims become available.
Raiding and protection windows
Choose whether raids are always possible, restricted to scheduled windows, or moderated by a grace period for new factions. A grace period can reduce immediate spawn-camping, while unrestricted raiding creates a harsher competitive environment. Test edge cases such as a faction leaving during combat, a base inside a protected region, and a claim changing ownership during a server restart.

Relationships and friendly fire
Define ally, truce, enemy, and neutral behavior in writing. Verify block interaction, doors, containers, projectiles, and area damage for each relationship. A relationship label that looks correct in chat is not enough if the underlying protection rules allow unintended access.

Upgrades and economy sinks
If you use SaberFactions upgrades or equivalent progression, decide which upgrades affect power, member limits, redstone, or faction points. Tie costs to your economy deliberately: cheap upgrades can make early progression meaningless, while expensive upgrades can prevent smaller factions from competing. Test costs with fresh accounts rather than an administrator balance.
Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Players can build at spawn | AntiBuild or a faction claim was used instead of a WorldGuard region. | Create the WorldGuard region, set the intended flags, and test with a non-operator account. |
| Chat prefixes or economy are missing | Vault is absent, a provider is disabled, or LuckPerms/EssentialsX is not exposing the service. | Inspect startup logs and provider status, then retest after a full restart. |
| WorldGuard and faction claims disagree | The bridge is missing, outdated, or incompatible with the factions core. | Check the bridge version; FactionsUUID 4.0 documentation lists WorldGuardFactionsBridge 1.3.9 as compatible in August 2025. |
| Commands or permissions stopped working after an update | FactionsUUID 4.0 naming changes or changed command nodes invalidated old settings. | Compare permissions, aliases, scripts, and placeholders with the new release’s naming. |
| Map shows old borders | The renderer has not completed an update or lacks the correct factions integration. | Check renderer logs, trigger a small test render, and verify claims after create, transfer, and unclaim actions. |
| Server lags during editing or rendering | Large WorldEdit/FAWE operations or a first map render are competing with gameplay. | Schedule heavy jobs, reduce render scope, and use backups before retrying. |
| New players are raided immediately | No grace period or starter protection is configured. | Enable and test a grace period, starter claims, or a protected tutorial region. |
| Two plugins answer the same command | Overlapping command aliases or multiple plugins providing the same feature. | Remove the duplicate feature, change the alias intentionally, and retest command suggestions. |
Migration and update strategy
Never update a factions core directly on the only copy of a live world. Stop the server cleanly, copy the world and plugin-data directories, record the old versions, and test the update on a staging instance. Pay particular attention to faction databases, permission nodes, placeholders, map hooks, and bridges.
For FactionsUUID 4.0, review every integration that refers to the former plugin or internal name. The documented naming change can affect more than the main jar: permission files, command blocks, scripts, and bridge configuration may all contain identifiers that no longer match.
After an update, test at least one faction through creation, claiming, power loss, ally/enemy changes, raid interaction, transfer, disbanding, and restoration from backup. If any step fails, roll back the complete plugin-data and world backup rather than mixing old data with a partially migrated installation.
Which stack should you deploy?
General-purpose competitive server
Use FactionsUUID, EssentialsX, Vault, LuckPerms, WorldGuard, and WorldEdit or FAWE. Add Dynmap, BlueMap, Pl3xMap, or SquareMap after the core claim and protection tests pass. This arrangement favors documented integrations and a familiar utility layer.
Progression-heavy server
Use SaberFactions when its grace period, faction points, anti-spam, cooldowns, and power, member, or redstone upgrades match your design. Keep the same supporting stack, and tune upgrade costs and power rules in a staging world before launch.
Small private or experimental server
Start with one factions core, EssentialsX, Vault, LuckPerms, WorldGuard, and an editor. Delay the map renderer until players actually need a browser map. Fewer moving parts make it easier to identify whether a claim, permission, or protection problem comes from the core or an integration.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Final selection checklist
- Does the core explicitly support your Minecraft, Paper, or Purpur version?
- Are claim, power, raid, relationship, and upgrade mechanics documented well enough for your rules?
- Do required bridges and map integrations support the same release?
- Have you accounted for FactionsUUID 4.0 naming changes if you are migrating?
- Are Vault, LuckPerms, EssentialsX, WorldGuard, and an editor included where their functions are needed?
- Have you tested spawn protection separately from player faction claims?
- Do backups and rollback procedures work on a staging copy?
- Have ordinary, moderator, and administrator accounts each passed a permission test?
For most first deployments, select FactionsUUID when broad documented integration is the deciding factor, or SaberFactions when its built-in progression and upgrade systems are central to the design. In either case, the dependable server is the one whose complete stack has been version-matched, staged, protected, and tested—not simply the one with the most features.
