Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

These recommendations are for Minecraft Java Edition on PC; they are not Bedrock add-ons and do not apply to console or mobile Bedrock installations. Compatibility changes by project and release, so confirm the exact game version and loader on each creator page before installing.
How to choose a Minecraft mod
There is no universal “best” mod: the right choice depends on what you want to change and whether the mod supports your setup. The recommendations below are examples by purpose, not a ranking or a claim that all the mods work together. The roundup checked creator Modrinth pages on September 21, 2026, and its guide was reviewed September 22; mod support may have changed since then. The picks were not play-tested together.

- Confirm the edition: these recommendations concern Java Edition on PC, not Bedrock.
- Check your Minecraft version: a release for one version may not work on another.
- Choose a loader: Fabric, NeoForge, Forge, and Quilt are not interchangeable. Fabric is commonly used for current performance and client mods, NeoForge for some newer large content mods, and Forge remains common in many older 1.20.1 modpacks. These are tendencies, not rules.
- Check where the mod must be installed: some are client-side, while multiplayer features may require server-side setup or installation on both sides.
- Review dependencies and conflicts: check required libraries, shader compatibility, and any other notes on the creator’s project page.
For example, Sodium’s CurseForge page lists Fabric, NeoForge, and Quilt support and describes Sodium as client-side. Its listed releases include Minecraft 26.1 through 26.3. It is installed after the loader, and official graphics support requires current drivers compatible with OpenGL 4.5 or newer. Older hardware may work, but is not officially supported.

Sodium for rendering
Sodium targets client rendering, making it a relevant option if you want to improve how the game draws frames. It is not a general optimization for every part of Minecraft: actual results vary with hardware and software configuration, and it should not be treated as a guaranteed frame-rate increase.
#1 Best Overall
- DELUXE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, three Bedrock add-ons, three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.
- SURVIVE THE ADVENTURE — Face mysterious foes, travel across exciting landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).
Sodium’s project page reports results from a specified Intel integrated-graphics test setup. Its “up to 23% faster” comparison applies specifically to Sodium 0.6.9 versus Embeddium 1.0.15 on Minecraft 1.21.1 with NeoForge 21.1.128; it is not a general promise for current releases or other computers.
Lithium for game logic
Lithium is presented as a game-logic optimization, a different target from Sodium’s rendering focus. Consider the two according to the kind of performance issue you are addressing, and verify their individual version and loader listings rather than assuming a shared compatibility matrix.
Rank #2
- ULTIMATE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, five Bedrock add-ons, five exclusive Character Creator items, and 1000 Minecoins.
FerriteCore for memory use
FerriteCore is aimed at reducing memory use, which can matter in large modpacks. The roundup reports a project example in which heap use fell from 1,792 MB to 984 MB in one large Fabric pack. That is an attributed example, not an independently verified test or a typical saving to expect on another setup.
Recipes, maps, and distant views
JEI or EMI for recipes and item lookup
Just Enough Items (JEI) provides searchable recipe and item lookup. EMI is an alternative with recipe-tree and filtering features. Their build coverage differs, so check the project page for your precise Minecraft version and loader before choosing.
Rank #3
- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that is unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world full of surprises.
- SURVIVAL ADVENTURES — Face mysterious foes, travel across varied landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play solo or join friends in local split-screen and cross-platform play across console, mobile, and PC. Online multiplayer supports up to 8 players.

Xaero’s Minimap or JourneyMap for navigation
Xaero’s Minimap and JourneyMap are map options for players who want help navigating. The roundup does not establish a hands-on comparison between them; compare their listed features and compatibility for your setup, then choose by preference.
Distant Horizons for far terrain
Distant Horizons draws simplified terrain at long distances. Its shader support depends on Iris and compatible shader packs, so check the current project notes if shaders are part of your setup.
Rank #4
- Skins! We have biome settlers, city folk, town folk, and more!
- The Nether and all its inhabitants. Fight Ghasts and make friends with Pigmen
- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
- Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more
New terrain and larger content changes
Terralith for world generation
Terralith changes world generation. Treat it as a decision to make when creating a world; the roundup advises against removing it from an existing world, because the mod’s terrain changes are part of that world’s generation.
Create for substantial new content
Create is an example of a large content mod. Many major content mods still target older Minecraft releases such as 1.21.1, so a player who wants this kind of content may need a separate installation from a setup built around the newest-version performance mods.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Building and multiplayer
Litematica for schematic-based building
Litematica supports a schematic and hologram building workflow. It requires MaLiLib. The roundup also flags a shader-rendering issue on Minecraft 1.21.3 and newer, so check current project notes if you use shaders.
Simple Voice Chat for proximity voice
Simple Voice Chat adds proximity voice chat, but the roundup says server-side setup is needed. If you play on a server, its administrator may need to configure and install the server component; check the project instructions for the version you use.
Download safely and update carefully
Use the creator’s project page or a recognized project platform, and verify both the Minecraft version and loader before downloading. Avoid unattributed reuploads: they may be outdated or malicious. A game update can leave a mod without a compatible build, so do not assume an older file will work simply because its name matches the mod you want.
Quick Recap
- Before installing, confirm the edition, exact game version, loader, side requirements, dependencies, and known conflicts.
- Before updating a world-generation mod or a major content mod, review its project notes and consider whether the change is safe for an existing world.
- If a mod stops working after a Minecraft update, check its creator page for a matching release and supported loader before changing loaders or replacing files.
