When a workflow becomes important to check on every release, turn what you learned into a reviewable regression test with explicit steps, business-outcome assertions, controlled data, and saved evidence. The two approaches complement each other: exploration discovers what might go wrong; regression assets make known risks repeatable to check.
Why a successful agent run is not yet a regression test
An agent completing a task shows that one attempt reached a plausible result. It does not, by itself, define what the next run must do, which conditions must be in place, or what would count as a product failure. A navigation path can appear successful while the intended business outcome is wrong.

Consider a release check for an administrator creating a project. “The agent created a project” is too vague to protect the workflow. A useful test specifies the starting conditions, the action, and the outcome that matters—for example, that the newly created project appears in the list with the expected status. The assertion should check that business result, not merely that a page loaded.
Exploratory testing is valuable precisely because the path is not yet fully known. An agent can try plausible routes, inspect visible state, and surface unexpected behavior. The resulting observations, screenshots, and bugs are candidate evidence. Once the team knows which behavior it needs to protect, it should encode that knowledge in an asset people can review and run again.
What “repeatable” means in practice
Repeatable does not mean that every part of an application or every external service behaves deterministically. It means the test controls what it can, states what it expects, and leaves enough evidence to understand a failure.
- Named purpose: Use a business-readable name that says what the test protects.
- Preconditions and steps: Document required setup and make the important path visible and reviewable.
- Outcome assertions: Check the intended user-visible business result, not just successful navigation or an agent’s interpretation.
- Data strategy: Use isolated fixtures or generated values, and control database state so one run does not depend on another.
- Environment consistency: Record or standardize relevant browser and operating-system versions, especially for visual comparisons.
- Failure evidence and ownership: Save results and step-level artifacts such as screenshots, and assign a team owner to review intentional changes and maintain the test.
Playwright recommends testing user-visible behavior and isolating tests from one another, including their local storage, session storage, and cookies. It also recommends controlling database data, keeping operating-system and browser versions consistent for visual regression testing, and avoiding tests against uncontrolled third-party services when a known network response can be provided. These practices improve reproducibility; they cannot guarantee that every test will be deterministic. See Playwright’s Best Practices.
Use agents for discovery; promote important paths into assets
Explore while behavior is uncertain
For a new or unclear feature, let an agent try plausible paths and inspect what the application displays. Capture observations, screenshots, and unexpected outcomes so the team can assess them. At this stage, adaptive actions are useful: the goal is to learn what paths exist and where behavior may break, not to pretend the path is already a stable release check.

When a workflow merits protection on every release or relevant change, decide what success means and write it down as a team-readable asset. Include preconditions, explicit steps, business-level assertions, a data strategy, failure artifacts, and an owner. Make changes to the path or assertions reviewable so a changed requirement does not silently rewrite what the test proves.
Replay, then investigate failures
Run the known checks at the release points or on relevant changes. When a check fails, determine whether the cause is a product defect, a changed requirement, unstable data or environment, or test maintenance. An agent can help explore the failure and suggest risks or updated paths, but a plausible page or successful navigation is not a substitute for the defined assertion.
Choose the test boundary deliberately
Application-owned orchestration and external model or provider behavior are different testing boundaries. The former can often be checked deterministically with scripted inputs. If the behavior under test belongs to an external model, provider, network protocol, or audio system, exercise it with real provider adapters or an integration environment rather than treating a scripted workflow test as proof of that external behavior.

The OpenAI Agents SDK documents deterministic, provider-neutral in-memory testing utilities for SDK-owned workflows and related behavior such as tool execution, handoffs, guardrails, retries, and workflow drift. Those utilities help test the application and SDK boundary; they do not establish that model outputs are deterministic. The SDK’s testing documentation distinguishes these cases.

Research reported in a 2025 empirical study of 39 open-source agent frameworks and 439 agentic applications found that more than 70% of testing effort in the analyzed projects went to deterministic resource and coordination components, less than 5% to the foundation-model-based plan body, and around 1% of tests included prompts as the trigger component. These are measurements of the projects in that study, not universal proportions for every agent team or product. They are a reminder to test the deterministic scaffolding deliberately without mistaking those tests for coverage of model behavior. See Hasan et al.’s study.

How hybrid agent and browser tests fit
Some products combine an agent’s adaptive actions with conventional browser-test replay. Bug0 describes a design in which an AI agent performs actions initially, successful single-action steps can be cached and replayed through Playwright, and assertions still run on each pass. That is a vendor-described product feature, not evidence that the entire test is deterministic: assertions and uncached or multi-action steps still involve AI. Its overview is available at Bug0 QA Agent.
When assessing a hybrid approach, ask which steps are replayed, which still invoke a model, where assertions run, and what artifacts are retained when a check fails. Account for model calls and uncached actions in operational cost and latency, but do not infer a particular product’s price or performance without current evidence.
