What Minecraft gamerules do
Gamerules are world-level settings changed with the /gamerule command. They alter how the server handles particular mechanics without installing a plugin or editing world files. A rule normally takes a Boolean value, true or false, although the accepted value depends on the rule.

Recent Java naming is the major compatibility issue. Community references disagree about exactly when the camelCase names changed to snake_case, with reports mentioning snapshots before Java 1.21.11, the Java 26 update, and Java 26.2. No primary Mojang changelog settled that boundary in the available documentation. Treat the command shown by TAB as authoritative for your server.
Check the rule names before changing anything
- Join the world or connect to the server with operator privileges.
- Open chat or the server console and enter
/gamerule. - Press
TABafter the command to list the rules exposed by that build. - Copy the spelling and capitalization from the suggestion instead of relying on a guide written for another release.
- Run the rule without a value to record its current state, for example
/gamerule keep_inventory. - Change one rule, test the relevant behavior, and record the command used so you can reverse it later.
If the server rejects a name, do not repeatedly guess variants. Try the alternative documented form—camelCase, snake_case, or Bedrock’s lowercase form—and use the server’s completion list to confirm which one exists.

Keep players’ items after death
When to enable it
Enable the keep-inventory rule when losing a full inventory would create more frustration than challenge. It is common on cooperative, building-focused, or family servers where the main goal is construction and exploration rather than recovering dropped items. Leaving it disabled preserves the standard risk of death and makes retrieval part of survival play.
Commands by edition and naming generation
For newer Java versions that expose the snake_case name, use:

Why “keep inventory” may appear not to work
- Wrong spelling for the release: A Java server may expose
keep_inventorywhile an older tutorial tells you to usekeepInventory, or vice versa. - Wrong edition: Bedrock’s
keepinventoryform is not interchangeable with every Java form. - Command permissions: An ordinary player cannot change a world gamerule without the required operator permission.
- State was never verified: Run the rule without a value after changing it; a command that was entered in another world or server does not affect the current one.
- Testing the wrong death: Test in the same world and edition where the command was applied, and check that the inventory is present after the death-and-respawn sequence.
Stop creepers and other mobs from changing blocks
What mob griefing controls
Disabling the mob-griefing rule stops creepers, ghasts, and similar mobs from changing blocks. This protects a base from explosive damage and prevents related environmental changes, while leaving the mobs themselves present unless another setting changes their spawning or behavior.

On newer Java builds that use snake_case:

- Explosions from the covered mobs no longer alter the protected terrain, so accidental base damage is reduced.
- The rule is world-wide; it is not a per-player or per-claim protection system.
- Because the setting addresses block-changing behavior, it should not be presented as a general “remove hostile mobs” switch.
- Announce the change if players rely on mob-created terrain changes as part of a farm or adventure map.
Reduce command-block messages in the console
commandBlockOutput controls whether output from command blocks is sent to the console. Administrators commonly turn it off when a command-heavy map or automation system produces messages that obscure useful server warnings.

The command documented in older Java material is:
/gamerule commandBlockOutput falseUse true to restore command-block output. The available material reports true as the default in older references, but it does not establish a universal default for every current Java or Bedrock release. Check the value on your server instead of assuming it.
Use it as an administration setting, not a debugging shortcut
Silencing output can make a busy console easier to read, but it also removes a stream of diagnostic information. Leave output enabled while building or troubleshooting command systems, test the commands, and disable it only after you know the system works. If a map later misbehaves, temporarily re-enable output before investigating.

doMobSpawning is frequently listed as a way to stop hostile mob spawns. The available documentation identified it as a common candidate but did not confirm its behavior from a source read for this article. Do not promise players that changing it will produce a particular spawning result.
If you are considering it, first use the server’s completion list to confirm the rule exists, query its current value, and test in a copy or controlled area. Record the original value so you can restore it. A tested result on one edition or release should not be treated as proof for another, because gamerule names and behavior can vary between Java and Bedrock and across versions.
Choose a combination that fits your server

A safe change-and-rollback procedure
- Identify the problem. Write down whether you are addressing item loss, block damage, console noise, or spawning. This prevents changing unrelated mechanics.
- Back up or duplicate the world. A gamerule is easy to change, but a mistaken setting can affect subsequent gameplay and map progression.
- Inspect the current value. Run
/gamerule <rule name>with no value and save the response. - Apply one change. Use the exact spelling suggested by
TAB, followed bytrueorfalse. - Test the outcome. Use a controlled test: die with nonessential items for keep inventory, observe a mob interaction for mob griefing, or watch the console while a command block runs.
- Tell players what changed. State the rule, its new value, and whether it affects the entire world.
- Roll back when needed. Run the same command with the recorded opposite value. If the name no longer works after an upgrade, inspect the suggestions again because the version may use a different spelling.
Troubleshooting gamerule commands
“Unknown or invalid gamerule”
Check the edition and release first. Java arguments are case-sensitive, and recent Java references use snake_case names while older references use camelCase. Type /gamerule, press TAB, and select the exact suggestion. On Bedrock, use the lowercase form reported for that edition where applicable.
The command runs but nothing changes
- Query the rule without a value to confirm that the intended state was stored.
- Make sure you changed the correct world, dimension, or server instance.
- Test the mechanic that the rule actually controls. Mob griefing, for example, concerns mobs changing blocks; it is not a general mob-removal command.
- Check that another administrator, datapack, command block, or startup routine is not changing the value again.
Players report different results
Gamerules are generally world settings, so verify that every player is connected to the same world and server process. Edition and version differences matter: a command copied from a Java guide may not be valid on Bedrock, and a name accepted before a Java update may have a snake_case replacement afterward.
Version naming: the practical rule
There is no settled version boundary in the available primary documentation for the Java rename from camelCase to snake_case. Reports place the transition around late-2025 snapshots, Java 1.21.11, the Java 26 update, or Java 26.2. Because those reports conflict, do not hard-code one cutoff into your server instructions.

For a current server guide, show both forms where the rule is known to have both spellings, label them by naming generation, and tell readers to use the live server’s TAB suggestions. This approach remains useful across minor updates without claiming that an older alias still resolves on every new build.
