Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe best OneDrive alternative depends on what you need to replace: file syncing, Office-style collaboration, private storage, or device backup. Google Drive and Dropbox suit familiar collaboration and syncing; iCloud Drive fits Apple-centered workflows; pCloud, Sync.com, and Proton Drive appeal to people weighing privacy and sharing controls; IDrive is strongest as a backup-led option. MEGA is another candidate, but its current plan and security details should be checked directly before choosing.
“Secure” is not one feature. Compare who can access your files, how you protect your account, what happens when you delete or overwrite something, and how much control you have over shared links. End-to-end encryption can reduce provider access, but it does not by itself make a service a better Office replacement or a complete backup plan.

What to compare before leaving OneDrive
- Privacy and encryption: Check whether files are encrypted end-to-end, what information is encrypted, and who controls the keys. Treat provider statements as product claims, not independent security audits.
- Account protection: Look for account-level safeguards such as two-factor authentication, alongside recovery options if you lose access.
- Recovery: Sync keeps files aligned across devices; a deletion or unwanted change can also sync. Backup and version history can help restore earlier files, but their scope and retention periods vary by plan.
- Sharing: Check whether you can limit access, add a password, or set an expiry date on links—and whether those controls apply to your plan.
- Workflow fit: Consider document editing, live collaboration, integrations, supported devices, and the effort of moving files and changing shared links.
OneDrive remains a useful baseline rather than a featureless default: Microsoft advertises a 5 GB free account and features including Personal Vault, ransomware detection and recovery, file sharing, and cross-device access. See Microsoft’s OneDrive page for current availability and plan details.
Eight alternatives, matched to the job
| Service | Best fit | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Google Drive | Google Workspace users and collaboration | Check current storage-sharing rules and plan details on Google’s Drive page. |
| Dropbox | General-purpose syncing and sharing | A mainstream alternative to compare for your devices and sharing workflow; confirm the current plan features directly. |
| iCloud Drive | People whose files and devices are mostly in Apple’s ecosystem | Check platform support and current iCloud+ tiers against Apple’s documentation before migrating. |
| pCloud | Personal storage with subscription or lifetime-plan options | Its plans page advertises both purchase approaches. TechRadar’s August 13, 2026 comparison says pCloud lacks a built-in document editor; verify current plan terms and optional encryption features before deciding. |
| Sync.com | People prioritizing secure file sharing and sync | TechRadar’s August 13, 2026 comparison describes end-to-end encryption, two-factor authentication, password and expiry controls, and version history. Check Sync.com’s current documentation for plan-level specifics. |
| Proton Drive | People prioritizing privacy and end-to-end encryption | Proton says files and names are encrypted on-device before upload and that Proton cannot access them. Its product page lists a free 5 GB tier, protected and expiring sharing links, and desktop sync with Windows and macOS, plus Android, iOS, and web access. |
| IDrive | Device backup and recovery | A backup-led option for people who value snapshots, versions, and recovery across devices; it is not a direct substitute for every OneDrive collaboration workflow. |
| MEGA | Another option to investigate for cloud storage | Confirm current encryption, capacity, pricing, platform support, and collaboration details on MEGA’s official pages before comparing it with the other services. |
This is a use-case shortlist, not a head-to-head ranking. The comparative observations above attributed to TechRadar come from its review last updated August 13, 2026, and are editorial assessments rather than vendor guarantees.

Which alternative should you choose?
For Google apps and shared documents: Google Drive
Start here if your household or team already uses Google’s document and collaboration tools. Check how storage is allocated across the relevant Google services and what the current plan includes on Google’s official Drive page. Moving files is only part of the switch: shared links, collaborators, and document-editing habits may need updating too.
For familiar file syncing and sharing: Dropbox
Dropbox is a mainstream option to evaluate when the priority is keeping files available across devices and sharing them with others. Compare its current app support, plan limits, recovery features, and collaboration tools with the way you use OneDrive; do not assume a generic speed or security ranking applies to your setup.
Rank #2
- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
For an Apple-centered setup: iCloud Drive
If your daily work happens on Apple devices, iCloud Drive may reduce friction with the files and services already in that environment. Check Apple’s current documentation for supported platforms and iCloud+ storage tiers, particularly if Windows or Android users must access the same folders.

pCloud is worth considering for personal file storage, including if you prefer to compare subscription and lifetime purchase options. Its plans page advertises those choices. TechRadar’s August 13, 2026 comparison notes that pCloud has no built-in document editor, so it may not replace an Office-style collaboration workflow on its own. Check whether any optional encryption feature you want is included in the plan you select.
Rank #3
- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
For privacy-focused sharing: Sync.com
Sync.com may suit users who want encrypted storage and controls around shared links. TechRadar describes end-to-end encryption, two-factor authentication, password and expiry controls, and version history, but entitlements can depend on the plan. Consult Sync.com’s current service information before relying on a particular control or recovery window. TechRadar also describes collaboration through Microsoft 365 integration, which is different from having a built-in document editor.
For end-to-end encrypted storage: Proton Drive
Proton says files and names are encrypted on your device before upload and that it cannot access users’ files. Its product page states: “Proton Drive’s end-to-end encrypted cloud storage ensures no one but you and the people you choose can access your files. Not even Proton.” This is Proton’s product-page wording, not independent validation. The same page lists free 5 GB storage, sharing links with password and expiry controls, and access through Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and the web. Confirm current plan features and operating-system capabilities on Proton Drive’s page.
Rank #4
- Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
For backup and restore: IDrive
Choose a backup-led service if your priority is recoverable copies of device data, snapshots, or earlier versions—not just a shared working folder. IDrive is useful to compare on that basis. Before switching, determine what it backs up, how restoration works, and how long versions are retained under the current plan. If you also need live collaboration and shared working files, assess those requirements separately.

How to move without losing your workflow
- Inventory what OneDrive does for you. List the folders you sync, devices and operating systems in use, shared folders and links, Office documents, and any files you rely on for recovery.
- Separate sync from backup needs. Identify which files must stay in sync for active work and which need a recoverable backup. Do not assume that a synced copy alone protects against every deletion or unwanted change.
- Check the destination plan before uploading. Confirm storage capacity, supported devices, recovery/version history, sharing permissions, and any encryption or collaboration features you require. Prices and entitlements change; use each provider’s current official plan page for your region and billing period.
- Test with a small folder. Install the destination apps on the devices you actually use, upload a representative set of files, and test editing, syncing, and link sharing with a collaborator if relevant.
- Move shared work deliberately. Tell collaborators when links or folder locations change, recreate permissions, and make sure documents still open in the applications your team uses.
- Keep the original until checks are complete. Compare file counts and important folders, open a sample of documents, and confirm the destination’s recovery options before removing the OneDrive copy.
Prices and features change
Storage tiers, plan names, included features, promotions, and regional availability are volatile. The service pages cited above are the right place to confirm current terms; the TechRadar comparison was updated August 13, 2026, while the product claims cited from Microsoft and Proton were checked October 7, 2026. Treat free-tier capacities and listed features as dated plan specifications, not permanent guarantees. No single provider in this shortlist is established as the universal winner across privacy, collaboration, backup, and compatibility.
