Best Microphone Stands for Live Streaming: Desk Arms and Desktop Picks

Choose a streaming mic stand by mounting style, complete load, thread, reach, desk fit, and cable clearance—not by arm style alone.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best microphone stand for a live stream depends on where the mic needs to sit and how you use your desk. A desk-clamp boom arm is the better fit when you want to bring a microphone close while seated and swing it away afterward. A weighted-base desktop stand avoids clamping but takes up space on the desk. Before buying, check the complete mounted weight, thread and adapters, desk thickness, reach, and cable clearance.

Choose the stand style that fits your setup

Desk-clamp boom arms

A clamp arm attaches to the desk edge and lets you reposition the microphone without placing a heavy base beside your keyboard. It suits a seated streamer who wants to move the mic into speaking position, then swing it aside. Check that the clamp fits your desk and that the arm can reach around your monitor and other equipment.

Weighted-base desktop stands

A weighted-base stand sits on a flat surface rather than clamping to the desk. It is a practical choice if you cannot clamp to your desk or prefer not to, but its base uses desk space and its reach may be shorter than that of a boom arm.

Tripod boom stands

Consider a floor-standing tripod if the microphone needs to be positioned away from the desk or the stand will also be used elsewhere. A long, extended boom can shift a tripod’s center of gravity and increase the risk of toppling; tripod legs can also become a floor trip hazard. For a fixed seated setup, a desk clamp or desktop base is usually easier to place.

Compare the stands by fit, not by a universal ranking

The figures below are manufacturer specifications, not comparative hands-on test results. Confirm the current product listing and the fit of your own desk and microphone before buying.

Model Mounting style and reach Supported load Mounting, desk fit, and cable details
Elgato Wave Mic Arm Desk clamp; 780 mm / 30.7 in horizontal reach, 750 mm / 29.5 in vertical reach, and 360-degree rotation. 250–1,000 g for the microphone and accessories. Clamp expands to 60 mm / 2.4 in. Compatible with 1/4-, 3/8-, and 5/8-inch microphone mounts; integrated cable channels. Elgato describes it as a studio-grade arm with extra reach and full adjustability; that is the manufacturer’s description.
RØDE PSA1 Desk clamp or desk insert; the specifications provided do not state reach. 700 g to 1.1 kg for the microphone plus shock mount or clip. Internal springs. The specifications provided do not state thread compatibility or a desk-thickness limit.
Elgato Wave Desk Stand Weighted base; 216 mm / 8.5 in horizontal reach and 411 mm / 16.2 in vertical reach. Maximum 1 kg / 2.2 lb. Uses a 1/4-inch thread and includes 3/8- and 5/8-inch adapters. No desk clamp.

RØDE describes its movement as quiet for recording and stream adjustments; this is manufacturer language.
Shure by Gator SH-BROADCAST1 Desk clamp; up to 940 mm / 32.25 in extension. The specifications provided do not state a supported load. Fits desks up to 55 mm / 2.17 in thick. Shure lists compatibility with the SM7B, SM7dB, MV7, MV7+, and MV7X through its threaded extension adapter, which provides XLR cable clearance for those named models. Microphone sold separately.

Check compatibility before ordering

Calculate the complete mounted weight

Use the weight of the microphone together with anything the arm must hold, such as a shock mount, clip, or other accessories. Compare that total with the manufacturer’s stated load range or maximum. For example, the Wave Mic Arm is specified for 250–1,000 g of microphone and accessories, while the PSA1’s stated range is 700 g to 1.1 kg for the microphone plus shock mount or clip. Do not assume a stand will support a heavy broadcast microphone just because it is sold as a boom arm.

FIFINE BM88 Low Profile Microphone Boom Arm Stand for Gaming Streaming
  • [Sturdy Metal] The all metal microphone arm stand provides stability and sturdy protection for your podcast microphone whether you're gaming, podcasting, recording or streaming. The C-clamp can stay attached to a flat desktop and will not slip, making it less likely to scratch your desktop. Even if you vigorously collide with the arm stand or extend it fully to a certain height, the boom arm won't wobble and still remain stable and sturdy. (The microphone is not included)
  • [Low Profile] The arm stand for gaming can extend from the bottom of your computer screen. The podcast mic stand gives more space in a unobstructing view while in an intense game. The low profile arm stand for mic can be set to extend under the bottom of the screen without interfering the screen or desktop space, which will not obstruct monitor view even fully extended.
  • [Cable Management] The low profile microphone boom stand is equipped with cable managements in hiddenness to organize your microphone cables. Neat arrangement of cable will not cause excessive pulling or resulting in unexpected use, keeping your streaming setup cleaner.
  • [Fully Adjustment] Suspension arm stand recording can be extended to 29 inches, suitable for your long large office desktop. The boom arm for microphone can be adjusted up to down by 220 degrees, and horizontally by 360 degrees. More angle adjustments provide more usage options. Tips:The section which near the C-clamp can not be adjusted up to down.
  • [Screw Adapter] Coming with three kinds of threads size, 1/4'', 3/8'', 5/8'' that are compatible with most brands of microphones, the microphone boom arm solves the hassle of choosing additional adapters, which give a straightforward but not difficult assembly. You can easily figure out and quickly install and use microphones, shock mounts, etc with the mic stand in gaming, vocal recording, video creation.

Match the thread and included adapter

Check the thread on the microphone mount and what the stand includes. Thread sizes listed across these models include 1/4, 3/8, and 5/8 inch, but the combination varies. The Wave Desk Stand, for instance, uses a 1/4-inch thread and includes 3/8- and 5/8-inch adapters. A thread adapter may be necessary even when a stand otherwise looks compatible.

Measure the desk edge and the working area

Measure desk thickness where the clamp will attach, then check whether the arm can clear your monitor, reach your mouth, and move out of the way. The Wave Mic Arm’s clamp expands to 60 mm / 2.4 in; the SH-BROADCAST1 is listed for desks up to 55 mm / 2.17 in thick. Also consider nearby shelves, monitor arms, and the space needed to open or reposition the clamp.

Plan XLR cable routing and connector clearance

For an XLR microphone, check that the cable can bend and connect without pressing against an arm or adapter. Shure specifically says the SH-BROADCAST1’s threaded extension adapter provides XLR cable clearance for the named Shure microphone models. The Wave Mic Arm and DS3 list cable channels or cable management, respectively; check your connector and cable path rather than treating cable routing as proof of model-specific XLR clearance.

Which one is the better fit for common setups?

  • You want long reach and a clamp: The Wave Mic Arm lists 780 mm horizontal and 750 mm vertical reach, along with a 360-degree rotation. Confirm your desk thickness and that the full mounted weight falls within its stated range.
  • You use an SM7B, SM7dB, MV7, MV7+, or MV7X: Shure lists those models as compatible with the SH-BROADCAST1 using its threaded extension adapter. Check the desk limit and allow for the XLR cable path.
  • You need a weighted base and broad thread compatibility: The RØDE DS3 is specified for devices up to 1.5 kg and lists 1/4-, 3/8-, and 5/8-inch mounting compatibility. Its reach is not stated in the specifications here, so compare its placement against your actual desk layout.
  • You need a compact weighted-base option: The Wave Desk Stand lists 216 mm horizontal reach and a 1 kg maximum load. It avoids a desk clamp, but its base occupies desk space.
  • Your complete assembly weighs within 700 g to 1.1 kg: The PSA1’s stated load range covers that interval for a microphone plus shock mount or clip. Confirm the stand’s mounting thread, desk fit, and positioning needs against the current product information before choosing it.

Set up the arm so it stays usable

  1. Place the clamp or base. Attach a clamp to a desk edge that is within its stated thickness limit, or place a weighted base on a flat, stable section of desk. Keep the intended arm movement clear of monitors and shelves.
  2. Attach the correct mount. Check the microphone’s mount thread and use the supplied adapter if needed. Secure the microphone and any shock mount or clip before judging the balance.
  3. Position the microphone. Adjust the arm to put the mic where you speak, with room to move it away when not needed. Check the full movement range rather than only the final speaking position.
  4. Route the cable. Use the stand’s cable channels or management where available, leaving enough slack for repositioning. Ensure an XLR connector is not forced against the arm or adapter.
  5. Check stability and clearance. Move the arm through its intended range and confirm that the clamp or base remains stable, the cable does not snag, and the microphone clears nearby equipment.

Or let your prerecorded stream run in the cloud

A microphone stand handles physical mic placement; it does not keep a YouTube stream running. If you also want uploaded videos to play as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps playing with your computer off, supports uploaded video up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
