The best mouse for a left-handed person depends first on whether you want a shape made specifically for the left hand or a symmetrical mouse you can use with either hand. Then check hand-size fit, grip, thumb-button placement, and whether you can switch the primary click. Logitech’s Lift Left is a vertical option for small or medium hands; its Signature M650 L Left is a roomier contoured option with side buttons positioned for the left thumb.
Choose between a dedicated left-hand mouse and an ambidextrous shape
A dedicated left-handed mouse is molded for the left hand. Its contours and side controls can be positioned to suit a left-handed grip, including placing thumb buttons where the left thumb can reach them. An ambidextrous mouse has a symmetrical shape that can be used with either hand, but that does not guarantee that every button is equally convenient on both sides.

Before choosing a symmetrical model, check where its side buttons sit and whether its software lets you change the primary click. Logitech describes both dedicated left-hand and ambidextrous options in its left-handed mouse guide. For a mouse you expect to use mainly with your left hand, a dedicated shape is the more straightforward route when thumb-button placement matters; symmetry can suit you if you prefer a shape that works with either hand.

Hand size and grip affect whether a mouse feels easy to control. Logitech recommends checking that you can comfortably reach the buttons and scroll wheel, that your thumb can reach any side buttons, and that the mouse supports your palm in the way you prefer. Its guide maps the Lift Left to small or medium hands and the Signature M650 L Left to larger hands.

- Hand size: Compare the mouse’s stated fit with your hand, then check whether your fingers reach the main buttons and scroll wheel without stretching.
- Grip: Consider whether you hold the mouse with your palm, fingertips, or a claw-like grip. A contoured shape may feel different from a low, symmetrical one.
- Controls: If you use side buttons, verify that they fall under your left thumb rather than being placed for right-thumb access.
- Connection and software: Check whether the model is wired or wireless and whether changing buttons requires manufacturer software.
Left-handed mouse options to consider
| Option | Shape and fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Logitech Lift Left | Dedicated vertical left-hand model; Logitech specifies small or medium hands and a 57-degree hand position. | Check whether the vertical shape and size suit your grip. The angle is a manufacturer product specification, not proof of a health benefit. Logitech Lift product page |
| Logitech Signature M650 L Left | Roomier, contoured left-hand variant, intended for larger hands, with side buttons on the right side for left-thumb access. | The main click remains on the left by default; Logitech says software can switch it. Logitech Support setup documentation |
| Evoluent VerticalMouse Left Hand | A left-handed vertical-mouse line appears in Johns Hopkins’ ergonomic product list. | Confirm the current model, size, and availability; the institutional listing does not establish present-day availability. Johns Hopkins ergonomic product list |

Is a vertical mouse a good ergonomic choice?
A vertical mouse is a distinct shape choice, not a universal solution. Logitech specifies a 57-degree position for the Lift Left, and RTINGS describes the Lift as a vertical mouse available in a left-handed version and better suited to small or medium hands. That describes its design and fit guidance; it does not establish that it will prevent or treat pain or another medical condition.
Ergonomic labels alone are not enough to choose a mouse. Compare the shape and size with your hand, and make sure the buttons and scroll wheel are comfortable to reach. RTINGS’ ergonomic mouse guide also notes that its current MX Master 4 pick is right-handed, so a high-ranking ergonomic recommendation may not be usable as a left-hand-shaped mouse. Does a left-handed mouse automatically reverse the clicks?
No. “Left-handed” can refer to the shape and side-button placement, not the primary-click setting. Logitech’s Signature M650 L Left keeps the main click on the left by default. Logitech Support explains: “Your mouse will still have the main click function on the left.” Its documentation says the primary click can be changed in software. Check the setting for your operating system and mouse before assuming the buttons are already reversed. Logitech Support: Signature M650L Left setup

- Choose the shape. Pick a dedicated left-hand mouse if you want a hand-specific contour and left-thumb side buttons; consider a symmetrical mouse if you want to use it with either hand.
- Match the size and grip. Use the manufacturer’s fit guidance, then check comfortable reach to the buttons and scroll wheel and adequate palm support.
- Inspect side-button placement. Confirm that the buttons are accessible to your left thumb if you rely on them.
- Check click settings. Find out whether the primary click is already configured for left-handed use or whether you must change it in software.
- Verify current product details. Older institutional lists can point to alternatives, but check the model name and availability with the manufacturer or seller. UC Berkeley’s alternate-mouse list dates to 2019.
What the available recommendations can—and cannot—tell you
Product guidance can identify left-hand shapes, hand-size suggestions, and control layouts, but it is not a universal comfort ranking. The cited sources do not establish a comparative hands-on result across all left-handed mice or show that a particular model prevents or treats a medical condition. Treat the Lift Left and M650 L Left as different fit options rather than assuming one is best for everyone.
