An export format alone does not make an AI-generated model printable: check its geometry, dimensions and thin features before slicing.
Choose STL or 3MF based on the print
Meshy’s 3D printing workflow recommends STL for single-color prints and 3MF for color or multi-material prints. The choice affects what information travels with the model, not whether its geometry is ready to print.

When separate parts matter
If you use Meshy’s documented auto-split API workflow and need split parts to remain separately selectable, its auto-split API documentation says 3MF can retain separate objects, whereas STL fuses split parts into one solid. This is specific to that API workflow, not a guarantee for every Meshy export path.
When you need textures for a visual workflow
For preserving PBR textures in a visual or digital-content-creation workflow, Meshy identifies GLB, FBX and OBJ as texture-capable choices in its export-format guidance. These are not the formats its printing guide recommends for ordinary single-color or color/multi-material print exports. STL does not preserve textures.

Set the model’s size and origin before download
Meshy’s download tutorial describes a resize control for setting a real-world target height and an origin control with Bottom and Center options. Choose a target dimension deliberately, and set the origin to suit how you plan to place the model in the next tool. Meshy’s Blender export guide also recommends applying scene scale for accurate printing.
After export, import the file into the slicer you intend to use and check its displayed dimensions and orientation before slicing. Meshy warns that 3D formats may use different units and that a generated model may not have real-world dimensions unless you set them. If you need to compare the intended size with a physical print, a digital caliper can help; Meshy does not recommend a particular model.

Check the mesh before you slice
Meshy outlines this workflow: Generate → Check & Repair → Scale → Export STL/3MF → Slice → Print. Its official guide names the key success factors as “watertight mesh + adequate wall thickness + correct export format.” The guide is product documentation, not a guarantee that every export will print successfully.

- Check watertightness and mesh integrity. If your slicer reports non-manifold geometry, Meshy recommends remeshing or repairing the mesh.
- Inspect walls and connections. Thin connection points can break; Meshy recommends thickening them in a digital-content-creation tool when needed. Adequate thickness depends on the model, printer and material, so there is no single wall-thickness setting that applies to every job.
- Confirm scale and orientation in the slicer. Correct any mismatch before slicing rather than assuming the export retained your intended dimensions.
- Preview the sliced result. Check that the model and its parts appear as intended before sending the job to the printer.
Meshy’s Blender export guidance also recommends analyzing and cleaning up geometry, adjusting size and orientation, checking again, and loading the export into slicing software.

Use this export workflow
- Choose the print approach: STL for a single-color job; 3MF for a color or multi-material workflow.
- Set the target size and origin: use Meshy’s resize and origin controls, choosing Bottom or Center to suit the model’s placement.
- Check and repair geometry: address non-manifold areas and weak, thin connections as needed.
- Export the chosen format: use STL or 3MF for the print workflow rather than choosing a texture-focused format by default.
- Import into your slicer: verify dimensions, orientation, part separation and any color or material assignments.
- Preview before printing: review the sliced model and correct problems before starting the print.
Keep visual textures separate from printable color
A textured Meshy model can look colored on screen without that appearance becoming a usable color assignment in a print workflow. STL carries no texture data; for color or multiple materials, Meshy directs users to 3MF. Check the slicer preview and confirm compatibility across the slicer and printer instead of assuming a model’s PBR textures will print as shown.
