The right choice depends on which apps or data your AI client needs to reach, what actions it may take, and whether the server can run in an environment you trust. A May 2026 editorial ranking from Findingwise names ten candidates across coding, automation, knowledge work, browser tasks, and business operations. That ranking reports its own hands-on testing; the candidates below have not been independently tested for this article, so treat them as a workload-based shortlist—not a verified performance ranking.
Which MCP servers are worth considering?
Findingwise’s May 2026 ranking lists the following ten MCP servers and describes their primary workloads. Its selection criteria include capability scope, reliability, maintenance, client support, and hands-on testing; those are the publisher’s assessments, not independent findings here. The best fit for you is the one that exposes the specific data or action you need while fitting your client’s transport, identity, and permission requirements.

| Server | Workload in Findingwise’s ranking | When to consider it | Check before enabling |
|---|---|---|---|
| GitHub MCP | Code, repositories, issues, and pull requests | If an agent needs to work with repositories or related GitHub work. | Confirm the supported deployment and exact repository permissions in current GitHub documentation. |
| Zapier MCP | Cross-app automation | If a workflow spans services you already use. | Verify which connected services and actions are available, and limit access to the workflow’s needs. |
| Notion MCP | Knowledge bases | If your team’s knowledge and workspaces live in Notion. | Check which workspace content and operations the server can expose. |
| Playwright MCP | Browser automation | If an agent needs browser interaction or automated web workflows. | Confirm the browser tasks and actions available; browser automation is not the same as a general web-search connector. |
| Supabase MCP | Backend and database tasks | If the work is tied to a Supabase project. | Scope project and database access carefully, especially where changes could affect production data. |
| Context7 MCP | Version-aware library documentation lookup | If developers need library documentation during software work. | Check current library coverage and the setup supported by your MCP client. |
| Slack MCP | Team conversation context | If an agent needs access to Slack conversations or related actions. | Review workspace permissions and which conversations or operations are in scope. |
| Linear MCP | Issues and project management | If your team uses Linear to track work. | Check the project access and whether the enabled tools can modify issues or project data. |
| Brave Search MCP | Web search | If an agent needs search capabilities. | Verify current API-key, quota, and data-handling requirements with the provider. |
| Stripe MCP | Payments and billing workflows | Only when there is a concrete business workflow that needs Stripe access. | Check available permission restrictions and safeguards separating test and live activity. |
The table identifies candidates by workload, not by an independently verified feature matrix. The ranking does not establish that every server works with every client, supports the same transport, or has the same current availability. Check the server’s current documentation and your client’s compatibility before installing.
Choose by task, not by a universal top-ten score
MCP servers expose capabilities to AI applications. Google Cloud’s overview describes three kinds of server features—tools, prompts, and resources—and distinguishes common deployment patterns: a local server using stdio and a remote server exposed over HTTP. Which pattern is appropriate depends on the client, the server, and where the relevant data and credentials belong.

- Name the job. Decide which data the assistant must read or which action it must perform. A connector for a service your team does not use adds little value.
- Separate reading from changing. Determine whether the workflow needs read-only access or permission to create, edit, delete, send, or otherwise change state. Treat production-impacting and financial actions as higher risk.
- Check the client and transport. Confirm that your MCP client supports the server’s current transport and configuration. Local stdio and remote HTTP are different deployment patterns, not interchangeable installation labels.
- Choose where trust belongs. Identify where the server runs, where credentials are stored, and which account, workspace, or project it can reach.
- Limit the exposed tools. Enable only the operations needed for the job. Google Cloud documents toolsets as a way to select logical groups of tools; its documentation also warns that an excessively broad tool surface can make agents slower, more confused, and more expensive.
Check ownership, maintenance, and permissions before installation
An MCP server can receive context from an AI application and may be able to access data or take actions through its tools. A listing in a community catalog or editorial roundup is a discovery lead, not a security audit. Before connecting one to a real account, review its source, maintainer, release activity, issue handling, and documented tool surface.
- Verify who maintains it. Prefer to understand whether the server comes from the platform vendor or a community maintainer, and whether its maintenance appears active.
- Understand each permission. Check what account, workspace, repository, database, or project is granted and what the server can do with it. Keep credentials limited to the smallest useful scope.
- Start with a narrow tool set. Avoid exposing unrelated operations simply because they are available. Reduce the enabled surface to what the task actually needs.
- Protect consequential workflows. For database, payment, and other production-facing tasks, establish the least access and strongest practical safeguards supported by that service before connecting it.
- Recheck current terms and costs. Confirm API usage charges, service plans, hosting needs, and any other operating costs with the provider; comparison-page pricing can become stale.
Google Cloud documents authentication, IAM controls for Google Cloud services, and Model Armor scanning for supported MCP calls and responses. Those are Google-specific controls; they do not establish equivalent protections for unrelated third-party servers. Apply the security model documented by the provider of the server and service you actually use.

Other developer guides and community catalogs include options such as filesystem, git, Postgres, SQLite, Sentry, Cloudflare, AWS, and Exa Search, spanning databases, developer tools, file and web access, productivity, communication, cloud infrastructure, and security. Their presence illustrates why “best MCP servers worth installing” depends on the workload: a team working in a database has different needs from one automating a browser or searching team conversations.
