Best Mario Kart World Settings for Online Races

A practical guide to Mario Kart World online settings: when to disable Smart Steering and Auto-Use Items, how to choose Auto-Accelerate, and what version 1.8.0 changes.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a strong starting setup in Mario Kart World online races, turn Smart Steering off and Auto-Use Items off. Set Auto-Accelerate according to whether you want to hold the accelerator yourself, and treat motion controls as a personal preference. Nintendo documents what each assist does, but it does not identify a universally fastest configuration; these recommendations prioritize direct control rather than claiming a measured speed advantage.

Recommended starting configuration

The best settings depend on how much assistance you want to trade for direct control. Use this as a baseline, then change one option at a time so you can tell which adjustment helped.

Setting What it changes Starting point for online races Choose the alternative when…
Smart Steering Helps keep the kart from leaving the course. Off for direct steering and access to your intended line. You regularly fall from the track or are still learning a course.
Auto-Accelerate Accelerates without requiring you to hold the acceleration button. Off if you prefer manual acceleration; On if holding the button is uncomfortable. You want less button pressure or need to concentrate on steering.
Auto-Use Items Uses held items automatically, with timing determined by the item. Off so you decide when to defend, attack or deploy an item. You would rather simplify item management than choose timing yourself.
Motion controls Uses a supported controller’s movement to steer. Use whichever control method gives you the most consistent lines. You find tilt steering more natural than an analog stick.

The table describes control trade-offs, not benchmarked online results. No reliable statistic establishes a win-rate, speed or rating advantage for one assist combination over another.

How to change the settings

Nintendo places these options in the Settings/Controller screen. You can change them before entering a race or while you are already in a mode.

#1 Best Overall
Mario Kart™ World (Nintendo Switch 2)
  • Race from one course to another through interconnected paths that span the world
  • Traverse mountains, forests, cities, and more—with shifting weather patterns and a day/night cycle
  • Ride on rails, jump off walls, skim across water, and more as you race for the finish line
  • Take on the adrenaline-packed Knockout Tour—a fierce 24-driver elimination mode
  • Explore courses at your own pace and wander the world to discover fun surprises in Free Roam
  1. From kart selection: when choosing your kart before a race or another mode, press X to open Settings/Controller.
  2. During play: in Single Player, Multiplayer or Free Roam, press + or – to pause, then press X to open the same settings screen.
  3. Adjust the assist you want, confirm the setting, and return to the mode.

When multiple people use the same console, Nintendo says each player can change these settings for themselves. That lets one player use Auto-Accelerate or Smart Steering without forcing the same choice on everyone else. See Nintendo’s full instructions in How to Change In-Game Control Settings.

Smart Steering: turn it off for direct control

Nintendo describes Smart Steering as an option to “make it easier to drive without falling off the course.” That is a stability assist: it is intended to keep a kart on the track when a steering input would otherwise send it over an edge. It is useful when learning routes, recovering from mistakes or helping a new player complete a course.

For an online player who wants to choose the exact racing line, turning it off is the sensible starting point. With the assist disabled, your steering input is not being shaped around staying on the course, so you can deliberately approach edges, jumps, wall rides and shortcuts. The trade-off is that mistakes are no longer softened; a missed turn can become a fall or a slower recovery.

Nintendo does not say that Smart Steering is universally faster or slower online. Therefore, do not treat “off” as a guaranteed performance upgrade. If you are losing races because you repeatedly leave the track, the time spent recovering may matter more to you than the extra control. In that case, use Smart Steering while learning, then test individual sections with it off.

When to keep Smart Steering on

  • You are learning a new course and falling is preventing you from seeing the full route.
  • You are introducing a child or a first-time player to the game.
  • You use a controller setup that makes precise analog steering difficult.
  • You would rather trade some steering freedom for a more forgiving drive.

When to switch it off

  • You can stay on the course reliably and want to choose your own line.
  • You are practicing shortcuts, rail grinding or wall riding that require deliberate positioning.
  • The assist is correcting a line you intentionally want to take near an edge.

Auto-Accelerate: a comfort decision, not a speed setting

Auto-Accelerate makes the kart continue accelerating during races without requiring you to hold an acceleration button. Its main benefit is reduced button holding. That can make long sessions more comfortable and leave a finger available for steering, drifting or item controls.

Leave it off if you like to control throttle input yourself, want the familiar manual feel, or sometimes need to release acceleration as part of your own rhythm. Turn it on if maintaining constant pressure is tiring, causes hand discomfort or distracts you from steering. Neither choice is established as a universal online advantage.

Answering the common “automatic acceleration” question

Players sometimes ask whether they should enable the automatic acceleration option. A practical answer is: enable it when the physical effort of holding acceleration is a problem; leave it disabled when manual throttle control feels more precise to you. Test the setting in a low-pressure race or Free Roam session rather than changing it for the first time in a ranked-looking online lobby.

Auto-Use Items: keep manual timing when decisions matter

Auto-Use Items activates held items automatically, and the timing depends on the item. With the option off, you decide whether to hold an item behind the kart for defense, throw it forward, use it immediately or wait for a better moment.

For online races, leaving Auto-Use Items off is the better starting point for anyone who wants control over item timing. Manual use lets you react to the player ahead, protect yourself from an incoming attack or avoid wasting an item before a turn. It also adds another button decision while you are steering, so automatic use can be reasonable if you prefer fewer simultaneous inputs.

Version 1.8.0 made Auto-Use Item available with Custom Items. That means the setting can affect races using custom item rules as well as standard item selections. If you play a custom ruleset, check whether automatic activation is still enabled before the race begins.

Mario Kart World Standard - Nintendo Switch 2 [Digital Code]
  • Race from one course to another through interconnected paths that span the world
  • Traverse mountains, forests, cities, and more—with shifting weather patterns and a day/night cycle
  • Ride on rails, jump off walls, skim across water, and more as you race for the finish line
  • Take on the adrenaline-packed Knockout Tour—a fierce 24-driver elimination mode

Situations where automatic use can make sense

  • You are concentrating on staying on the course and frequently forget to activate items.
  • You want a simpler control scheme for a less experienced player.
  • You accept that the game, rather than you, will choose the activation moment.

Motion controls and controller choice

Motion steering is available with supported controller setups, according to Nintendo Life’s guide to Mario Kart World control options and assists. It changes how you provide steering input; it does not establish a separate competitive class or guarantee better results.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use motion controls if tilting the controller gives you smoother, more repeatable steering than an analog stick. Use stick steering if you find it easier to make small corrections, hold a line while drifting or keep the controller still. Because no reliable comparison shows motion steering producing better online outcomes, consistency is the deciding test.

A simple controller test

  1. Choose a familiar course or Free Roam area.
  2. Drive the same section several times with stick steering.
  3. Repeat it with motion steering, keeping the controller in the position you normally use.
  4. Choose the method that produces fewer missed turns and less physical strain, not the one that feels more novel.

Online requirements and the current game version

Nintendo’s update information lists version 1.8.0, released September 9, 2026. The game must be updated to use its Internet features, an active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for online features, and everyone playing together must be on the same game version. Check Nintendo’s current Mario Kart World update instructions if an online option is unavailable or players cannot join one another.

Version 1.8.0 added courses to VS Race, Time Trials, Online Play and Wireless Play. It also changed how much rating fluctuates according to course length, enabled Auto-Use Item with Custom Items and adjusted item probabilities, among other gameplay changes. Those changes mean online rules and item behavior should not be treated as permanently fixed; consult Nintendo’s update history when maintaining a settings guide.

What to check before troubleshooting controls

  • Confirm the game has installed the same current update on every console involved.
  • Confirm that the account using online features has Nintendo Switch Online access.
  • Open Settings/Controller from the current player’s menu; shared-console players can have different choices.
  • If you are using Custom Items, verify the Auto-Use Item state specifically, because version 1.8.0 extended that option to the ruleset.

Course selection in online room races

Course voting depends on the mode. In Nintendo’s documented room-race format, each participant selects a course and the game randomly chooses from those selections. That description applies to that room format; it should not be generalized to every online mode or every matchmaking rule.

If your group is trying to practice a particular route, make sure everyone understands that selecting the same course is different from receiving a guaranteed course unless the mode’s rules explicitly say otherwise. For other online formats, read the on-screen instructions for that mode.

Build a setup around your actual problem

Instead of copying another player’s entire configuration, identify the control problem you are trying to solve.

If you fall from the course

  1. Turn Smart Steering on while learning the route.
  2. Use practice runs to identify the braking points, edges and recovery paths that cause failures.
  3. Turn it off for short sections when you can stay on the track and want more line control.

If your hands tire from holding acceleration

  1. Turn Auto-Accelerate on.
  2. Keep your focus on steering, drifting and item decisions.
  3. Turn it off only if you discover that manual acceleration is more comfortable or more controllable for you.

If items activate at the wrong moment

  1. Turn Auto-Use Items off.
  2. Practice holding an item behind you and activating it only when your intended target or threat is clear.
  3. Check the setting again when switching to Custom Items, because version 1.8.0 supports automatic use there as well.

If steering feels inconsistent

  1. Choose either analog-stick or motion steering for a complete practice session instead of switching every race.
  2. Use the same controller position and sensitivity habits each time.
  3. Keep Smart Steering either consistently on or consistently off during the comparison so it does not confound your judgment.

Practice techniques that complement the settings

Assist choices cannot replace route knowledge. A TechRadar guide author who had spent more than 60 hours with the game recommends learning rail grinding and wall riding, and says that watching world-record ghosts in Time Trials helped reveal shortcuts. This is the author’s practice advice, not an official Nintendo settings recommendation or a controlled test of online performance; use it as a method for finding lines to investigate.

Use Time Trials to isolate a line

  1. Choose one course and run it repeatedly without the pressure of online opponents.
  2. Watch a high-level ghost to see where it approaches a rail, wall or shortcut.
  3. Practice the entry and exit separately until you can repeat them.
  4. Return to online races only after the route feels predictable with your chosen assist configuration.

Practice the setting and the technique together

If Smart Steering is on while learning a shortcut, the assist may keep you from exploring the exact edge or angle you need. If Auto-Use Items is on, you may never practice the timing decisions that matter in a close race. Match the practice settings to the skill you are trying to build, then use the online configuration you intend to keep.

“My friend and I have different assists.”

That is expected when players share a system: Nintendo allows each player to change these options for themselves. In an online group, each player should check their own Settings/Controller screen rather than assuming the host’s choices apply to everyone.

“We cannot play together online.”

First update the game, then verify that every participant is running the same version. Nintendo also requires Nintendo Switch Online for online features. Version mismatches can prevent players from joining even when their control settings are identical.

“My custom-item race uses items automatically.”

Check Auto-Use Items before starting the race. Version 1.8.0 extended the option to Custom Items, so a setting that previously affected only standard play can now change behavior in that ruleset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Turning an assist off made me slower.”

That can happen while you are adapting to the loss of assistance. Nintendo does not promise a universal speed gain from disabling Smart Steering. If falling or missed turns increase, practice the course with the assist on, then remove it gradually rather than treating the setting as a guaranteed upgrade.

A practical pre-race checklist

  • Confirm the game is updated and that your online membership is active.
  • Open Settings/Controller from kart selection or the pause menu.
  • Choose Smart Steering based on whether you need stability or direct line control.
  • Choose Auto-Accelerate based on comfort and manual throttle preference.
  • Leave Auto-Use Items off when you want to control timing; recheck it for Custom Items.
  • Select stick or motion steering according to repeatable control, not claims of a universal advantage.
  • Read the mode’s course-selection rules before assuming a vote guarantees a particular track.

There is no single officially endorsed competitive preset. Start with direct steering and manual item timing, use Auto-Accelerate only when it improves comfort, and change the configuration to solve a specific control problem you can identify.
