The right values depend on whether you use a wireless controller or a wheel, your comfort with steering response, and how much electronic assistance you need. GT7’s manual explains what each control does, but it does not publish a universal numeric preset for every player, car, and device.
Use the relevant Beginner, Intermediate, or Expert baseline, then change one setting at a time. For a controller, tune Controller Steering Sensitivity. For a wheel, tune Force Feedback Max. Torque and Force Feedback Sensitivity separately. Confirm hardware compatibility, update firmware, and reduce force or vibration if the wheel becomes uncomfortable.

The practical answer: start from a preset, then tune for your device
Gran Turismo 7 has two different kinds of “sensitivity” that are easy to confuse. Controller Steering Sensitivity changes how quickly the front tires respond to wireless-controller input. Force Feedback Max. Torque and Force Feedback Sensitivity affect the feel and resistance of a force-feedback wheel. Changing one does not substitute for changing the other.

For driving aids, Beginner, Intermediate, and Expert are starting points rather than speed rankings. Beginner is aimed at players new to driving games, Intermediate at practiced players, and Expert at experienced players. Once you alter an individual aid, GT7 labels the combination Custom. A Custom setup is not a failure or a disadvantage; it simply records that your settings no longer match a preset.

Because the official manual and update notices describe effects rather than a tested universal number, treat any numeric setup shared by another player as that person’s baseline. Car, tire, controller, wheel firmware, seating position, and personal comfort all change the result.
Open the correct menus before changing anything
Most changes are made before a race, not from the main world map. Enter a race or license event and open the pre-race Quick Menu.
- Choose Settings → Controller Settings for button assignments, Controller Steering Sensitivity, Force Feedback Max. Torque, and Force Feedback Sensitivity.
- Choose Settings → Assistance Settings for the driving-assistance preset, transmission, and individual aids.
- For the physical control style, open Options → Controllers. The manual lets you choose a steering method and a pedal input method, and you can change both after the initial control-type screen.
Make one change, drive a repeatable section of track, and note what changed. If you alter several controls at once, you will not know which adjustment improved or harmed the car.
Best wireless-controller setup
Choose the input method you can control consistently
GT7 documents three steering inputs for a wireless controller: the left stick, directional buttons, and the motion sensor. It also provides three pedal styles: R2/L2, face buttons, and the right stick. None is identified by the manual as universally fastest. The best choice is the one that lets you make the same steering and throttle movement repeatedly without fatigue.
- Left stick: provides continuous steering travel and is a sensible starting point for most players.
- Directional buttons: offer digital left/right commands. They can feel immediate but provide less gradual travel than a stick.
- Motion sensor: lets you steer by tilting the controller. It can work well if you keep the controller level and make small, deliberate movements.
- R2/L2 pedals: give separate analogue throttle and brake travel when your fingers can modulate the triggers comfortably.
- Face-button pedals: are digital inputs and may suit players who prefer a simple on/off command.
- Right-stick pedals: provide a shared analogue control that some players find natural and others find difficult to coordinate.
Test steering and pedal combinations in a low-speed car before judging them in a high-powered machine. A control style that feels quick can still be slower if it causes missed braking points or abrupt throttle application.
Set Controller Steering Sensitivity by response, not by a claimed “meta” number
The manual states that lower Controller Steering Sensitivity values produce a slower, smoother steering response. Higher values make the tire response faster and more sensitive to controller input. This setting applies to wireless-controller steering; it does not change a wheel’s force feedback.

- Begin with the current default value.
- Drive several identical corners and watch whether the car turns in too slowly, turns in sharply, or oscillates when you make corrections.
- If the car feels lazy and you can move the stick a long way without enough direction change, raise sensitivity slightly.
- If the car darts into corners or small thumb movements create repeated corrections, lower sensitivity slightly.
- Repeat the same test after each small change. Keep the value that lets you place the car accurately, not simply the value that feels most aggressive.
Do not use Controller Steering Sensitivity to solve a braking or traction problem. If the car locks a tire or spins its wheels, adjust your braking and throttle technique or the relevant assistance instead.

Wheel tuning has two independent controls in Controller Settings. The manual describes different effects for each, so adjust them separately and give yourself time to feel the difference.
Force Feedback Max. Torque
Force Feedback Max. Torque sets the wheel’s maximum torque. The manual notes that higher values make tire response feel duller when cornering hard. In practice, increase or decrease it in small steps until you can feel the car loading up without the rim becoming difficult to hold.
- If the wheel is physically uncomfortable, causes arm strain, or produces harsh jolts, reduce Max. Torque.
- If the steering feels too weak to communicate cornering load, raise it gradually while keeping the wheel controllable.
- Do not assume maximum strength supplies maximum detail. A force that is too strong can mask smaller changes and make you release the wheel late.
Force Feedback Sensitivity
Force Feedback Sensitivity controls how the wheel responds as a turn begins. Higher values make the wheel more responsive to changes. Lower values make straight-line steering gentler. It is therefore possible to have a strong wheel that still feels calm on a straight, or a moderate-strength wheel that reacts sharply at turn-in.
- Leave Max. Torque at a comfortable level first.
- Change Force Feedback Sensitivity and drive the same corner from the same approach speed.
- Raise it if the beginning of the turn feels vague and you want earlier resistance to steering changes.
- Lower it if the wheel feels nervous on straights or demands constant small corrections.
- Return to Max. Torque only after you understand the sensitivity change.
There is no official numeric combination that is best for every wheel. A useful setup is one that communicates weight transfer and loss of grip while allowing you to hold the wheel safely for a full session.
Reduce excessive vibration before changing everything else
Owners of the Logitech G923 can adjust Vibration Strength under Options → Controllers → Vibration Function. The compatibility notice dated March 21, 2023 lists 100 as the default and says to lower it when vibration is excessive or loud. The G923 uses TRUEFORCE effects for engine and wheel-slip vibration in GT7, so mechanical noise is not necessarily a software fault.

- PREMIUM BUILD: Look, feel and durability of a real race car wheel, pedals and shifter. Wheel cover, knob and boot are covered in high-quality, hand-stitched leather with a solid steel gear shaft and polished metal pedals
Lower vibration first if the wheel is rattling, distracting you from tire feel, or uncomfortable. Do not compensate for a noisy wheel by making Max. Torque or Force Feedback Sensitivity extreme. The G923 notice also describes checking connected steering-controller inputs and calibrating pedal sensitivity under Options → Controllers → Steering Controller Settings.
Choose the right assistance preset
Beginner
Beginner is the manual’s starting point for players new to driving games. It retains more intervention so you can learn braking, steering, and throttle timing without managing every correction immediately. Use it while you are still learning track layouts or finding a comfortable control method.
Intermediate
Intermediate is intended for practiced players who want more control while keeping selected aids. It is a useful bridge when Beginner feels intrusive but Expert leaves you making frequent mistakes.
Expert
Expert is intended for experienced players who understand how braking, throttle, and steering inputs affect the car. It removes or reduces more assistance, but the manual does not claim that every aid-off combination is always faster. Some cars, weather conditions, and races reward a controlled aid more than an ambitious setting.
Custom
Change the preset first, then adjust individual options to match the problem you are trying to solve. GT7 changes the label to Custom as soon as an individual setting differs from the selected preset. Record your changes so that a later update or controller swap does not leave you guessing.
Transmission, automatic shifting, and clutch hardware
Transmission is available in Assistance Settings and can be set to automatic or manual. Manual (MT) is required for the gear-stick and clutch operation described in the manual.

- Pressing the clutch pedal activates full manual mode.
- The gear stick must be installed for the clutch pedal to be used.
- Some drivetrain types cannot use the clutch even when manual transmission is available.
The manual names the TH8 RS as an example of a compatible gear stick. If you are buying or adding a shifter, verify the exact console and GT7 compatibility rather than assuming that any USB device will provide clutch functionality.
Check wheel compatibility before troubleshooting
GT7’s online manual lists these steering-wheel controllers. The T500RS entry is explicitly marked PS4-only, and the T248 is listed as operating as T-GT-compatible.
| Manufacturer | Models listed by the GT7 manual | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Thrustmaster | T-GT, T-GT II, T248, T300RS, T500RS, T150 Force Feedback, T80 Racing Wheel, T598 | T500RS is listed for PS4 only; T248 operates as T-GT-compatible. |
| Logitech | G PRO Racing Wheel, G29 Driving Force, G923 Racing Wheel | Use the model-specific setup and firmware guidance for your console. |
| Fanatec | CSL Elite Racing Wheel, GT DD Pro / Extreme, Podium | Confirm the exact base, rim, pedals, and console mode before configuring. |
Compatibility is not the same as identical behavior. Two listed wheels can have different torque ranges, pedal sensors, firmware requirements, and vibration characteristics. Use the in-game controls to establish a comfortable baseline after confirming that GT7 recognizes the hardware.

Update 1.31 changed preset defaults
GT7 Update 1.31 changed controller steering and force-feedback algorithms. It changed the Intermediate preset’s Countersteering Assistance from Strong to Weak and Traction Control from 5 to 3. The Expert preset’s Countersteering Assistance changed from Strong to Off.
The notice also says previously selected Intermediate or Expert settings were not overwritten. Instead, the preset became Custom. This explains why a player can select a familiar-looking preset and still see values that do not match a newly installed game or a guide written before the update. Check every individual aid after a major update instead of assuming the label restored the old combination.

Update 1.65 added simulated friction to selected wheels
The official Update 1.65 notice says simulated friction was added to select force-feedback steering-wheel controllers to bring steering feel closer to a real car. It advises updating steering-controller firmware. The notice extract does not identify every affected model, so install the latest firmware supplied for your own wheel and do not assume that all models receive the same effect.

A repeatable tuning routine for any device
- Choose one car and one familiar track. Use a car whose braking and cornering behavior you already understand.
- Save your current values. Write down sensitivity, torque, assistance, transmission, and any vibration setting before changing them.
- Set the experience baseline. Pick Beginner, Intermediate, or Expert according to your current skill, then decide which specific problem you want to address.
- Change one control. On a controller, begin with steering sensitivity. On a wheel, begin with Max. Torque or Force Feedback Sensitivity, not both.
- Drive a fixed test. Use the same approach speed, braking point, gear, and corner each time.
- Check both precision and comfort. A setting that produces a quick turn-in but causes missed apexes, arm fatigue, or constant corrections is not an improvement.
- Keep or revert. If the change is unclear, restore the previous value and test another day rather than stacking uncertain adjustments.
- Repeat after hardware or software changes. A new wheel, firmware update, or GT7 update can alter the way a familiar value feels.
Common problems and targeted fixes
The controller feels twitchy
Lower Controller Steering Sensitivity slightly and retest. Also check whether you changed from a stick to directional buttons or motion steering; the input method itself can explain the sudden response change.
The controller feels slow to turn
Raise Controller Steering Sensitivity in small steps. Confirm that the issue is steering response rather than understeer caused by excessive speed, throttle, or a particular car’s setup.
The wheel is too strong in corners
Reduce Force Feedback Max. Torque. Higher torque can make tire response duller when cornering hard and can hide smaller cues behind a heavy rim.
The Tool Desk

Adjust Force Feedback Sensitivity separately from Max. Torque. Higher sensitivity increases responsiveness to changes as a turn begins; if the wheel becomes nervous on straights, back it down.
The wheel is loud or vibrating excessively
For a G923, lower Vibration Strength from its default of 100 under Options → Controllers → Vibration Function. Check firmware and pedal calibration before making large force-feedback changes.
The preset does not match a guide
Inspect each assistance option and look for the Custom label. Update 1.31 preserved some previously selected Intermediate and Expert values and converted the preset to Custom, so the label alone does not prove that every value was reset.
The clutch does nothing
Set Transmission to Manual (MT), install the gear stick, and verify that the drivetrain supports clutch operation. A gear stick alone uses auto-clutch; the clutch pedal activates full manual mode only when the required hardware is installed.

A concise starting checklist
- Use the default controller sensitivity first; move it only after identifying a response problem.
- For wheels, set a comfortable Max. Torque before tuning Force Feedback Sensitivity.
- Select Beginner, Intermediate, or Expert as a starting point, then use Custom when a specific aid needs changing.
- Check the supported-wheel list and console restrictions before buying or troubleshooting hardware.
- Update wheel firmware, especially after the changes described in Update 1.65.
- Review saved values after major game updates because preset defaults can change without overwriting your previous selections.
- Prioritize repeatable control, clear feedback, and comfort over a more aggressive number.
