Best Low-Power PCs for 24/7 Prerecorded YouTube Live Streams

An N100 mini PC is a sensible starting class for one modest prerecorded YouTube stream, but TDP is not whole-system power. Compare measured consumption, encoder support, cooling, and network stability.

For a computer-based prerecorded YouTube Live stream, start your shortlist with an Intel N100 mini PC; compare an N305-class system if the stream will share the machine with other demanding work. The N100’s listed 6 W and the i3-N305’s 15 W are processor TDP figures—not measured electricity use for a complete mini PC, and not proof that a particular model can run continuously without problems.

Choose by measured whole-system power, encoder support, sustained cooling, and network stability—not by a low-power label alone. YouTube also documents a dedicated encoder workflow for scheduled prerecorded media, so a mini PC is not the only way to keep a stream running.

Which low-power PC should you shortlist?

Intel N100: a starting point for one modest stream

An N100-class mini PC is a reasonable first candidate for a single, straightforward streaming task. Intel Marketplace-hosted ECS board specifications list the N100 at 6 W processor TDP. That number describes the processor specification, not the PC’s total wall power while encoding.

Intel Core i3-N305: compare it when you need more headroom

The same board specification lists the Core i3-N305 at 15 W processor TDP. Its higher processor TDP makes it a class worth comparing if the machine will handle simultaneous workloads or more demanding settings; it does not establish that an N305 system is necessary or sufficient for a specific stream.

These figures support a processor-class shortlist, not a ranking of tested mini PCs. No model-specific measurements establish idle or encoding watts, multi-day thermal behavior, current comparative prices, or suitability for a particular resolution. Check the exact PC configuration and test it under your workload before treating it as a 24/7 solution. Intel Marketplace-hosted ECS board specification

What to check before buying

  • Whole-system power: Look for independent wall-meter measurements for the exact PC at idle and during the encode. Processor TDP does not include the rest of the system, such as memory, storage, motherboard, fan, or power adapter.
  • Encoder compatibility: First choose the codec, resolution, and frame rate you intend to send. Confirm that the PC, operating system, and encoder support that combination. YouTube lists H.264, HEVC, and AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant-bitrate encoding (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Its bitrate guidance varies with codec, resolution, and frame rate; consult the current table when setting up. For example, YouTube lists 3–8 Mbps for AV1/HEVC at 1080p 30 fps and recommends 10 Mbps for H.264 at that resolution and frame rate. YouTube live encoder settings
  • Sustained cooling and noise: Check the cooling design, fan behavior, and whether the system remains stable during a long run. A fanless label alone does not prove that a PC is the better choice for continuous encoding.
  • Memory and storage: Check capacity, whether components can be replaced, and whether the machine has enough space for the source media and any local recordings you plan to retain.
  • Network: Prefer a stable connection and check whether the PC has a wired network port. Measure upload capacity from the location where it will run, rather than relying on a plan’s advertised download speed.
  • Support and total cost: Compare the exact configuration, current price, warranty, and seller support. The available specifications do not establish current prices or equivalent model-level value.

Prepare YouTube and the connection

  1. Check channel eligibility. YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. YouTube live-streaming tips
  2. Choose stream settings your encoder and connection can sustain. Set the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR mode, and keyframe interval in your encoder. Use YouTube’s current bitrate table for the selected combination; do not assume a setting that works for one codec or resolution will suit another. YouTube live encoder settings
  3. Check upload headroom. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and leaving room for the primary and backup streams plus 20%. Treat that as YouTube’s guidance, not a universal independently measured threshold; leave enough capacity for the stream and other traffic on your connection. YouTube live-streaming tips
  4. Use the stream key carefully. In the encoder, enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key, then start sending content. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
  5. Test and monitor. Test the complete setup before relying on it and monitor YouTube’s stream-health information while live. A successful short test does not establish that the particular PC will remain stable for days.

Plan stream length and recordings

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The guidance does not establish that one longer uninterrupted stream will produce a complete archive, so use sessions of an appropriate length and preserve a local recording if the footage matters. To end an encoder stream, YouTube says to stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder

Troubleshooting a computer-based stream

  • YouTube does not receive the stream: Confirm that the encoder has the correct YouTube Live server URL and stream key, and that it is actively sending content. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder.
  • Stream health is poor or the video stutters: Check the encoder’s selected codec and bitrate against YouTube’s current settings for your resolution and frame rate. Test upload speed, leave the recommended headroom, and reduce the stream’s demands if the connection cannot sustain them.
  • The PC becomes unstable during a long run: Check temperatures, cooling, and system behavior under the actual encode. The processor TDP alone cannot diagnose the full system or establish that it is suitable for continuous operation.
  • The archive is missing or incomplete: Check the stream duration. YouTube’s automatic-archive statement covers streams under 12 hours; keep a local recording when a complete copy is important.
