Start with an output profile your upload connection can sustain, test the stream, and monitor YouTube’s stream health before leaving it unattended. No official source gives a guaranteed wattage saving or a universal low-power preset for this workload, so verify the results on your own PC.
Set Windows to turn off the screen without sleeping
Windows 11 has separate timers for the display and the computer. Go to Settings → System → Power & battery → Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Set the screen-off timeout to suit your unattended setup, then set the plugged-in sleep timeout so the PC does not sleep while OBS is expected to broadcast. If the PC sleeps, the encoder may stop sending the stream.

Under Settings → System → Power & battery → Power Mode, choose Best Power Efficiency as a starting point. Microsoft says this mode reduces consumption by limiting background activity, but it does not specify a saving for every PC or this particular streaming workload. After changing it, check that OBS remains stable on your hardware. Microsoft’s Windows 11 power settings guide describes these controls.

For a meditation stream with a static image and audio, keep the scene as simple as the broadcast allows. OBS notes that sources may consume resources even when they are not visible; browser sources and complex scenes can also be demanding.

- Remove unused sources and filters rather than leaving them in the scene.
- Use a static visual if animation is not needed.
- Avoid oversized image assets that appear small in the final output.
- Keep only the audio, visual, and overlay elements viewers need.
OBS recommends reducing output resolution and frame rate when lowering rendering and encoding workload. Its guidance does not promise a particular electricity saving. Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for the connection
YouTube does not publish a meditation-specific encoder preset. Choose an output that fits the material and the upload connection: a static scene may not need the same frame rate or resolution as fast-moving video. If 1080p is unnecessary, 720p can be a practical lower-workload starting point, based on OBS’s guidance that lower output settings reduce work—not a platform requirement.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1, constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended two-second keyframe frequency (not more than four seconds), and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. For a straightforward OBS setup, use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, then select a bitrate within YouTube’s range for your chosen codec and resolution. The following H.264 examples are YouTube’s encoder guidance, checked in 2026; they are not power-consumption measurements:

These are platform ranges, not a requirement to use the recommended ceiling. YouTube advises testing upload speed and choosing a reliable quality for the connection. Leave upload headroom rather than setting the stream bitrate at the full measured upload capacity, and test the actual stream before relying on it. Test the unattended setup and check stream health
- Test the intended content. Include audio and movement similar to the planned stream; a test using a different scene or silent video may not reveal the same problems.
- Confirm the screen can turn off. Check that Windows turns off the display without sleeping the PC or interrupting OBS.
- Check OBS after power changes. Verify the encoder remains stable after changing Windows power mode, output resolution, frame rate, or bitrate.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages. Resolve warnings before leaving the broadcast unattended. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health rather than assuming a successful start means the feed will stay healthy.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a single broadcast will create one unlimited-length archive; check YouTube Studio’s current stream-management behavior for your channel. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
Measure your own PC’s power use
Windows power-mode labels and OBS workload guidance do not quantify the watts your particular computer will use. If you want a before-and-after comparison, an optional plug-in electricity usage monitor can measure your PC under comparable conditions—for example, with the same scene, output settings, and display state. The result will depend on your computer and workload; no specific monitor or fixed saving is established here.
