What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For a modest, locally run YouTube gaming VOD stream, an Intel N100 mini PC is a reasonable low-power starting point—not a proven 24/7 streaming winner. Intel specifies the N100 at 6 W TDP, but that is processor power, not the mini PC’s total draw, and it does not establish that a particular box can encode your chosen stream continuously. If you want prerecorded videos to loop on YouTube Live, rather than just play locally, a cloud service may remove the need to leave a PC running at all.
First decide what “running a YouTube gaming VOD stream” means
Two workflows are often confused:
- Local playback: a mini PC plays a YouTube video on a screen. It is not encoding and retransmitting that video as your own live stream.
- Live streaming prerecorded footage: a computer or cloud service sends an encoded feed to YouTube Live, often by looping or scheduling existing videos.
The second workload is substantially more demanding than simply playing a video. The hardware, software, encoder support and network connection must all suit the stream you intend to send. If your aim is to keep prerecorded gaming footage live around the clock, compare the cost and maintenance of a local PC with a cloud option before buying hardware.

Why an N100 mini PC is a plausible starting point
Intel’s N100 specifications list four cores and four threads, a maximum turbo frequency of 3.40 GHz, 6 MB cache, UHD Graphics with 24 execution units, 4K display output at 60 Hz, and Quick Sync Video. Intel lists a 6 W TDP. These specifications make the N100 worth considering for modest video duties, but they do not prove that every N100 mini PC can encode a particular live stream, or that the entire system uses only 6 W.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIntel also notes that feature availability and performance vary by system configuration. Check the exact mini PC’s supported hardware encoder and confirm it works with your operating system and streaming software at your required codec, resolution and frame rate. Hardware decode support or a 4K display specification alone does not establish suitable hardware encoding performance.

What a reviewed N100 example does—and does not—tell you
CNX Software’s 2024 review of the MINIX NEO Z100-0dB describes a system with an N100, 16 GB RAM and a 512 GB M.2 SSD. It also reports different power limits from another N100 mini PC, illustrating that systems using the same processor can behave differently. The review is not a 24/7 YouTube encoding endurance test, so it cannot establish continuous-stream reliability.
Choose a mini PC by workload, not processor label alone

- Encoder and software compatibility: confirm the codec, resolution and frame rate your streaming software can encode using that system’s supported hardware or software encoder.
- Sustained cooling: look for model-specific information about cooling and long-duration behavior. A processor specification or a review of another workload is not proof of uninterrupted operation.
- Memory and storage: check that the system can run your chosen software and hold any local recordings, playlists or media files you need.
- Wired networking: Ethernet is a sensible preference for a stationary stream when available, but it cannot make an inadequate internet upload connection sufficient.
- Power behavior and support: check power-loss recovery behavior, warranty terms and the manufacturer’s support for the exact model.
- Actual wall power: seek measurements for the complete system at idle, playback and encoding load before estimating electricity costs. The processor’s TDP is not a whole-system reading.
Set the YouTube Live encoder and network correctly
YouTube’s encoder guidance explains that an encoder converts video into a digital format for streaming on YouTube. Its current English guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds.

Use YouTube’s recommended bitrate as a target, not a connection-speed guarantee
| Output | Codec | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | H.264 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | H.264 | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended streaming bitrates, not universal minimum upload speeds. The total stream bitrate must fit the upload bandwidth actually available to the encoder. Leave headroom for network variation and other household use; a connection that only just matches the video bitrate is vulnerable to drops or degraded stream health.

Test before relying on a continuous stream
- Set the encoder to a supported codec, CBR and a two-second keyframe interval (never more than four seconds), then choose a resolution and frame rate your specific system can sustain.
- Use representative gaming footage and audio during a test. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health.
- Check for encoding overload, buffering, dropped frames and audio problems. If the stream is unstable, lower the output resolution, frame rate or bitrate, or address the encoder or network bottleneck before leaving it unattended.
- Confirm the stream key and live-stream setup in YouTube Studio using YouTube’s current workflow. Treat the stream key as a password: do not publish or share it, and replace it if it is exposed.
Do you need a mini PC to loop prerecorded videos?
Not necessarily. YouTube’s encoder options page lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 live streaming of prerecorded videos on YouTube without a camera or dedicated PC. That is directly relevant when your goal is to loop or schedule existing gaming footage, rather than use the mini PC for local playback or other tasks. YouTube’s listing does not establish Gyre’s pricing, availability or suitability for a particular channel.
Before streaming, make sure you have the rights to the game footage, music and other material in your videos. A live format does not make copyrighted content permissible. YouTube’s reused-content and monetization decisions are separate from whether a video can technically be streamed; check the platform’s current policies for your channel and content.

Account for the whole cost and the failure points
A mini PC’s purchase price is only part of the cost. Add any needed storage, accessories, software and electricity. Because the available 6 W figure is the N100 processor’s TDP—not measured system consumption under this workload—do not use it by itself to calculate annual electricity cost. Ask for or measure complete-system wall draw at idle, playback and encoding load, then use your local electricity rate.
For a stationary setup, an Ethernet cable can reduce reliance on Wi-Fi, but cannot compensate for insufficient upload capacity. A compact UPS may help bridge brief power interruptions where outages are common; its runtime depends on the total connected load. Neither accessory establishes 24/7 uptime.
Troubleshooting a mini-PC YouTube stream
- YouTube reports poor stream health or the stream buffers: check the encoder’s total bitrate against real available upload bandwidth, account for competing network use, and lower the output bitrate if needed.
- The PC drops frames or encoding overloads: confirm the selected encoder and codec are supported by the exact system and software combination. Reduce resolution, frame rate or bitrate and test again.
- The stream disconnects and does not return: check the internet connection, power behavior and streaming software’s reconnect settings. Do not assume a particular mini PC will recover automatically after a failure.
- The stream key is rejected or the stream will not start: verify that the key belongs to the intended YouTube stream and has not been changed or exposed; follow YouTube Studio’s current encoder setup.
- The system becomes unstable during long sessions: inspect cooling, sustained system behavior and the manufacturer’s support guidance for the exact model. A short playback test does not establish continuous encoding reliability.
Or let it run in the cloud
For prerecorded videos that need to loop as a YouTube Live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud handles the looping, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
