1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a compact desk dashboard that updates occasionally, the best-supported starting point is a 7.5-inch, 800 × 480 monochrome e-Paper HAT with its driver board. It has documented SPI connectivity, partial refresh, and low panel standby current. That is not a whole-dashboard power rating: the controller and any Wi-Fi or rendering host also use power.
Which e-ink display is best for a desk dashboard?
The 7.5-inch Waveshare e-Paper HAT is the most straightforward fit among the documented options for a small, mostly static dashboard. Its driver-board format and SPI interface make it a more practical starting point than a bare panel, and its listed refresh modes suit occasional changes to text, symbols, and simple charts.

The right choice still depends on what matters most: the compact monochrome HAT favors simpler integration and quicker updates; the larger color HAT favors screen area and color separation; the 13.3-inch monochrome module favors a large canvas for builders willing to verify and integrate the panel electronics.
How the three options compare
| Option | Documented specifications | Trade-offs and checks | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7.5-inch monochrome e-Paper HAT | 800 × 480; SPI; 4-second full refresh, 0.4-second partial refresh, 26.4 mW typical refresh power, and standby current below 0.01 μA in Waveshare’s product information and manual. These are manufacturer figures; the manual says measured refresh results may vary with driver board and use conditions. | 9.7-inch Spectra 6 color HAT+ | 1120 × 784; SPI; 30-second full refresh and refresh power below 0.6 W, according to Waveshare’s product documentation. What “low power” means for an e-paper dashboard
E-paper is reflective and has no backlight. Waveshare says the 7.5-inch panel retains its last content when power is removed and that power is basically required for refreshing. That describes the display panel, not a complete dashboard: the controller, network connection, and any device that renders or fetches data can continue to draw power. Waveshare product listing

The 7.5-inch listing gives a typical refresh-power figure of 26.4 mW and standby current below 0.01 μA. Those specifications should not be treated as a measured whole-system average or converted into a battery-life promise. The manufacturer manual says refresh measurements are experimental and may vary with the driver board and conditions of use. Waveshare manual
For a desk display, the practical advantage is retaining a static image without continuous illumination. A dashboard that constantly refreshes, keeps a Wi-Fi radio awake, or runs a power-hungry host can still use substantial energy relative to the panel.

- Enjoy a paper-like viewing experience with the 2.13-inch e-paper display. The screen can retain the last displayed image even after power is removed, making it ideal for applications requiring long-term information display without continuous power supply.
- Designed for low-power projects, this e-ink module only consumes energy during screen updates and remains in standby mode most of the time. Perfect for battery-powered devices, smart labels, IoT projects, and long-running applications.
- Featuring a 250x122 pixel black-and-white display, this e-paper HAT delivers clear text and image rendering. Partial refresh support helps reduce update time and power consumption for smoother display operation.
- Equipped with a standard Raspberry Pi 40-pin GPIO header and SPI communication interface, this display module works with Raspberry Pi series boards, Arduino, ESP32 and other compatible development platforms. Built-in voltage conversion supports both 3.3V and 5V MCUs.
- Comes with connection accessories and supports online resources including driver board diagrams and example programs for Raspberry Pi, Arduino, and ESP32, helping developers quickly start their projects.
Refresh speed: choose for the way your dashboard changes
The 7.5-inch HAT lists a 4-second full refresh and a 0.4-second partial refresh. Those are manufacturer figures for that product, not guarantees for other panels or every controller setup. Full refresh visibly flickers, according to the manual; partial refresh can be preferable for small changes when the exact panel and driver support it. Waveshare product listing · Waveshare manual
The 9.7-inch Spectra 6 documentation lists a 30-second full refresh. That can work for a dashboard refreshed on a schedule or when data changes, but it is not a good match for animation or frequent visual updates. The page also says performance may vary and low temperatures can shift color. Waveshare product documentation

- This is an E-Ink raw display, 7.5inch, 800×480 resolution, with embedded controller, communicating via SPI interface.
- Due to the advantages like ultra low power consumption, wide viewing angle, clear display without electricity, it is an ideal choice for applications such as shelf label, industrial instrument, and so on.
- No backlight, keeps displaying last content for a long time even when power down
- Ultra low power consumption, basically power is only required for refreshing
Plan the interface around meaningful changes rather than treating e-paper like a conventional monitor. A clock that updates every second, scrolling content, and animation undermine the advantages of a slow-refresh, static display.

For the simplest hardware path, start with a panel-plus-driver configuration. The 7.5-inch HAT includes a driver board and uses SPI, but it remains a display component rather than a complete dashboard computer. Check that its revision and example software match the host you intend to use. Waveshare’s product resources cover examples for boards including ESP32, Raspberry Pi, Arduino, STM32, and Jetson Nano; that does not mean every panel and board combination is interchangeable. A bare 7.5-inch panel is a separate option, but Waveshare’s listing says it is supplied without a PCB and points to separate driver options. Buy it only if you are prepared to select and connect a compatible driver board. Waveshare raw-panel listing
For the 13.3-inch module, the 2017 specification is not enough to establish which current controller, waveform, or ready-to-connect configuration to buy. Confirm those requirements against the exact panel and supporting hardware before committing to a build.
Quick Recap
How to keep a dashboard build efficient
- Choose a refresh interval based on when the displayed information meaningfully changes; the manufacturer specifications do not establish a universal ideal interval.
- Use partial updates only when the exact panel and driver support them, and test the result with your intended content.
- After an update, use the panel’s sleep or power-off options where the hardware permits. Waveshare’s 7.5-inch manual recommends sleep or disconnecting panel power during standby to reduce consumption and extend screen life. Waveshare manual
- Account separately for the controller, host, and network connection when estimating system power; panel refresh and standby figures do not include them.
What to check before buying
- Canvas: Match the active area and resolution to the viewing distance and information density your desk layout needs.
- Color: Choose monochrome for a restrained text-and-chart display, or color if category separation justifies the slower documented full refresh on the cited 9.7-inch option.
- Refresh modes: Check full and partial refresh support for the exact panel, driver board, and library you will use.
- Integration: Confirm SPI or other interface requirements, connector, driver board, controller compatibility, and available examples.
- Product status: Verify the current revision and support materials. Product specifications do not establish live stock or regional availability.
