OBS Studio is the best general-purpose starting point for local recording during a live stream if you need scenes, sources, overlays, and control over recording format and audio tracks in the same broadcast workflow. It can record while you stream or on its own. Streamlabs Desktop is a strong alternative when selective recording or multitrack workflows matter most; NVIDIA App and AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition are more focused options for gameplay capture and instant replay on supported hardware.
This recommendation is based on documented features, not comparative performance testing. The right choice depends on whether you need a complete production setup or simpler capture, and on what your computer can handle.

How to choose local recording software
Local recording saves a copy of your content to your computer while you stream, or records without a live broadcast. Before choosing an app, decide what you need to edit or capture afterward.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Production controls: If you need scenes, sources, and overlays as part of a full broadcast workflow, prioritize a studio-style application. If you only need gameplay footage or a replay buffer, a GPU vendor’s capture tool may be sufficient.
- Editing flexibility: Separate microphone and desktop or game audio tracks make it easier to adjust levels independently in post-production. Configure tracks before the session; an already-mixed recording cannot be separated into its original sources afterward.
- File resilience and storage: Pick a recording format and save location deliberately, and make sure there is enough free disk space for the session. High-resolution or long gameplay recordings can be large.
- Hardware fit: Resolution, frame rate, encoder, scene complexity, and GPU assignment all affect workload. A computer that meets minimum compatibility requirements is not necessarily able to record at every desired setting.
Best local recording software for streamers
1. OBS Studio: best all-around starting point
OBS is the strongest fit among these documented options for a streamer who wants a flexible production setup and local recording in one application. Its standard recording guide explains how to record while broadcasting or record offline, set a recording path and format, and choose audio tracks through Advanced output settings.

For resilience if OBS or the computer stops unexpectedly, OBS recommends recording to MKV rather than directly to MP4: an ungraceful stop is less likely to corrupt the entire MKV recording. If an editor or upload workflow needs MP4, OBS has a built-in remux function to convert the finished MKV. Confirm that your chosen editor supports the tracks and format you record.
OBS is free and open source according to the OBS Project repository. Its system requirements guidance cautions that compatible hardware alone does not guarantee the workload will run at a chosen resolution and frame rate. Use the Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then test the actual scenes and sources you plan to use.

Set up a recording you can use later
Choose the format and destination before going live
In OBS, set the recording path and format in its output settings. Use MKV if you want protection against losing the entire file after an ungraceful stop; remux to MP4 afterward when your editor or publishing workflow requires it. Check that the destination drive has enough free space and that you can find the saved file before starting a long session.
Configure separate audio tracks before recording
If you want to edit your voice separately from desktop or game audio, set up multitrack recording in advance and verify which sources go to which tracks. OBS supports track selection through Advanced output settings. Streamlabs documents a multitrack workflow in its multi-track recording guide. Twitch’s local recording guide also describes track-separation workflows; the page’s date is not stated in the retrieved source, so check it for current instructions.
Check GPU assignment on laptops
On a laptop with integrated and discrete graphics, OBS warns that running OBS on the integrated GPU while a game uses the discrete GPU can interfere with Game Capture or performance. Follow the OBS GPU Selection Guide to check which GPU the application uses, and test capture after any change.
Test the real workload, not just a blank scene
Record a short sample with the intended scenes, overlays, sources, resolution, frame rate, and encoder. Review both picture and audio, including the separate tracks if you configured them. OBS’s system guidance makes clear that performance varies with these settings and the computer; there is no universally best resolution or encoder setting established for every system.
Troubleshooting common recording problems
- Recording is missing or saved somewhere unexpected: Check the configured recording path in the software and confirm that the destination drive was available and writable when recording started.
- The recording will not open after a crash or forced shutdown: OBS recommends MKV for resilience to an ungraceful stop. If the recording completed as MKV, use OBS’s built-in remuxing to create an MP4 copy for a workflow that requires it.
- Microphone and game audio are mixed together: Configure separate tracks before recording and confirm the track assignments in a short test. Track separation cannot be retroactively recovered from a single mixed track.
- Game Capture fails or performance changes on a laptop: Check whether OBS and the game are using different GPUs, then review OBS’s GPU-selection guidance and retest.
- Recording stutters or the computer struggles: Reduce workload by adjusting resolution, frame rate, encoder, or scene complexity, and retest. Compatibility does not guarantee that every combination will perform well.
- The drive runs low on space: Check available storage and the recording destination before the next session. AMD warns that gameplay recordings can consume substantial space; an external SSD is an optional way to manage files, not a software requirement.
Or let it run in the cloud
Local recording software saves files to your computer; it does not keep a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos after your machine is off. For that separate always-on use case, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube stream running from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer does not have to stay on at home, videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly costs $9.99 per month.
