What to look for in streaming software that records
“Recording” can mean saving the finished program mix while you stream, or capturing each camera and audio source separately for editing later. Decide which you need before choosing software: a straightforward local program recording is a different workload from isolated-source recording (ISO) and multitrack audio.

3. Streamlabs Desktop — creator-focused alternative to evaluate
Streamlabs Desktop is worth comparing if you prefer a creator-oriented workflow. Its support guidance lists 8 GB of RAM as a minimum and recommends 16 GB or more for resource-intensive streaming configurations. Test before going live
- Build the actual production. Add the cameras, screen capture, audio devices, and scenes you intend to use. A test with fewer sources may not expose the load of the finished setup.
- Set the stream and recording outputs. Choose resolution, frame rate, encoder, and recording format for your intended use and available hardware. Do not assume one bitrate or output setting is right for every platform and computer.
- Run a local recording while testing the live output. Check both that the stream remains stable and that the saved file plays, contains the expected audio, and is written to the intended storage.
- Review system load and the file. Look for dropped or stuttering video, missing audio, or storage interruptions. If problems appear, simplify scenes or lower output demands, then run the test again.
- For ISO workflows, test every source and track. Confirm the individual recordings are present and usable, and that the storage can sustain the workload.
Common problems and fixes
- The stream or recording stutters: The encoder, output settings, scene complexity, or available computer capacity may be a bottleneck. Reduce output demands or simplify the production, then test again. A compatible minimum specification is not a performance guarantee. OBS system requirements
