For private editing, start with LM Studio if you want a documented offline chat and document workflow after downloading a model. Consider AnythingLLM if you want a desktop app that combines local models, document chat, and workflows. Both are candidates, not proven winners: their official sources do not compare writing quality, speed, accessibility, or hardware requirements.
“Local” means that inference can happen on your device in a suitable configuration; it does not guarantee that the application never connects to the internet. To edit privately, check where your draft goes in the specific setup you use and keep optional cloud features turned off if you do not want hosted processing.

How to choose a local AI writing assistant
For editing, the key question is not which app has the broadest feature list. It is whether your draft and any attached documents stay on your device in the configuration you choose—and what other parts of that workflow connect to the internet.

- Draft handling: Find out whether chat prompts and uploaded documents are processed locally or sent to a hosted provider.
- Connected activity: Model discovery, downloads, updates, support, and optional cloud services may involve network requests even when editing itself is local.
- Editing workflow: Document chat can help you ask questions about a draft or source material, but neither product source establishes that it replaces a dedicated word processor or offers superior writing edits.
- Setup: You will need to install the app and obtain a model. The reviewed sources do not provide a reliable minimum hardware specification for either tool.
LM Studio: offline chat and document workflows
LM Studio’s offline documentation says its core functions can work without internet after the necessary model files are on the computer. These functions include chatting with a local model, chatting with documents, and running a local inference server. LM Studio says prompts entered in chats do not leave the device when using downloaded models locally.

For document work, LM Studio states: “When you drag and drop a document into LM Studio to chat with it or perform RAG, that document stays on your machine.” RAG, or retrieval-augmented generation, lets the app use relevant content from a document when responding to a question. These are the company’s descriptions, not findings from an independent security audit.
What still needs a connection
Getting set up is not necessarily offline. LM Studio says model searches and downloads require network requests; its documentation also identifies runtime downloads and app update checks as connected activities. Its practical offline condition is to obtain model files in advance, with sideloading also mentioned as an option.

LM Studio’s privacy policy distinguishes local use from those connected activities. It says local messages, histories, and documents are not transmitted when users download and run models locally. Separately, it describes data processing for update checks, model searches and downloads, support email, and cloud requests. The policy says cloud requests are processed transiently when users purchase and choose cloud services. These statements describe LM Studio’s stated practices; they do not establish that every third-party model source or connected feature is risk-free.
AnythingLLM: an all-in-one local desktop option
AnythingLLM describes its desktop app as local by default, with the model, documents, and chats stored on the desktop. Its product page says the app can download and run an LLM, chat with documents, and build workflows locally without a cloud API key. The company summarizes its approach this way: “AnythingLLM is designed to be local by default. Everything from the model, documents, chats, all stored locally on your desktop.”

That default is not a guarantee that every possible configuration stays offline. AnythingLLM also says it can connect to local or cloud model providers. Before working with sensitive drafts, check which provider your workspace uses and whether any optional connected features are enabled.
Choosing a model and computer
AnythingLLM says it can recommend a model based on a user’s hardware specifications, but the reviewed product information does not state minimum RAM, storage, processor, or graphics requirements. LM Studio’s reviewed sources likewise do not establish a minimum configuration. Model size and performance depend on the setup, so these sources are not enough to recommend a particular computer or predict editing speed.

This is a workflow comparison, not a quality ranking. The official sources reviewed do not provide controlled tests of editing quality, output quality, speed, accessibility, or performance against cloud assistants. Choose based on the data flow and setup you can verify, then try the app with a non-sensitive sample before relying on it for private drafts.

Running inference locally can reduce the need to send draft text to a hosted AI model. It does not by itself prove that an entire installation, app, plugin, model source, or optional feature is offline or secure. Both products offer configurations involving local processing, and both require readers to consider connected setup and feature choices.
The vendor statements cited here explain how the companies describe their products and data handling. They are not independent security audits, and they do not certify every possible workflow. If your work has strict confidentiality requirements, review the current privacy documentation and the exact provider and feature settings before entering sensitive material.
