Choose according to where the gateway can run, how it handles provider failures, which governance controls you need, and who will operate it. The seven options compared here—Vercel AI Gateway, OpenRouter, Portkey, LiteLLM, Cloudflare AI Gateway, Kong AI Gateway, and Helicone—are drawn from a July 2026 comparison by Vercel, a vendor in the list, and a separate fit-based comparison by Arize. Neither establishes a universal winner.
What an LLM gateway does—and what it does not
An LLM gateway sits between an application and model providers. It can give an application a consistent endpoint while centralizing tasks such as provider and model routing, retries, fallbacks, rate limits, budgets, credential controls, logging, caching, guardrails, and cost attribution. The precise feature set depends on the product, configuration, and plan.

Gateway telemetry records requests that pass through the gateway. It does not, by itself, tell you whether retrieval found the right information, an agent used a tool appropriately, or the final answer solved the user’s task. Treat traffic monitoring and end-to-end quality evaluation as separate needs.
Seven LLM gateways and the teams they may suit
The table summarizes the fit described in Vercel’s July 27, 2026 vendor-authored comparison and Arize’s 2026 fit-based comparison. These are source descriptions, not results from independent product testing. Product features, terms, and ownership can change; verify the current offering before choosing.

| Gateway | Potential fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Vercel AI Gateway | Teams already using Vercel or its AI SDK that want a managed gateway integrated with that ecosystem. | Vercel’s comparison describes it as managed-only, so it may not fit a requirement to run the data plane inside your own network. Check supported models, plans, and API behavior. |
| OpenRouter | Teams seeking a hosted multi-provider catalog through one managed API; Arize describes routing controls and automatic provider fallback. | Compare credit-purchase fees and bring-your-own-key terms. Provider inference charges are not necessarily the whole cost of using the gateway. |
| Portkey | Teams looking for managed or hybrid operation with centralized routing, guardrails, governance, and observability. | Arize reports that Palo Alto Networks completed its acquisition in May 2026 and that product positioning is changing. Confirm deployment availability, plan limits, and roadmap implications. |
| LiteLLM | Teams that need self-hosting, an OpenAI-compatible interface, provider choice, and configurable routing. Its official documentation describes integrations with 100+ LLMs and gateway controls. | Self-hosting makes your team responsible for patching, capacity, monitoring, credential protection, and availability. Review current security advisories and patched releases. |
| Cloudflare AI Gateway | Teams already using Cloudflare that want routing, analytics, caching, rate limits, and policy controls in that environment. | Establish whether a configured action retries a transient error or switches to a different provider; test the actual routing path and policy behavior. |
| Kong AI Gateway | Organizations already operating Kong API management that want AI traffic governed in that control plane. | Check whether desired AI-specific routing, semantic caching, or policy features require paid Enterprise options, and account for the wider Kong operating model. |
| Helicone | Vercel’s comparison presents it as an observability-oriented, low-overhead option. | Vercel’s July 2026 article reports that Helicone is in maintenance mode. Independently confirm its current maintenance, support, security, and roadmap status before relying on it. |
How to compare gateways for your workload
1. Set the deployment boundary and ownership model
Decide whether a managed service is acceptable, whether the gateway must run in your own environment, or whether a hybrid arrangement is needed. Include the operational owner in that decision: a self-hosted gateway can give you control over its runtime, but it also leaves your team responsible for updates, monitoring, capacity, and availability. Confirm whether your requirements include a private network or air-gapped deployment rather than assuming every self-hosted product supports it.
2. Test the failure behavior you actually need
“Retry” can mean another attempt against the same upstream, while “fallback” can mean changing models or providers. Those behaviors may be automatic or may require explicit configuration. Test realistic upstream failures and inspect which model and provider ultimately answered; do not infer cross-provider failover from a claim about retries.

- NO SUBSCRIPTION FEES & PRIVATE LORAWAN NETWORK: Build a local LoRaWAN IoT network with the built-in SIoT server and pre-installed Node-RED. Collect data, create dashboards, and run automation flows locally without required cloud service fees. Suitable for DIY makers, home gardeners, educators, and small IoT prototype projects.
- LOCAL DATA PROCESSING & PRIVACY CONTROL: Sensor data can be processed on the local network through the built‑in MQTT/SIoT server, reducing reliance on third‑party cloud platforms. Local automation rules continue running when internet access is unavailable — suitable for home, garden, greenhouse, and classroom IoT setups.
- 4KM COVERAGE & 8-CHANNEL RELIABILITY: Equipped with the SX1302 8-channel LoRaWAN chip, -140dBm sensitivity, 27dBm max transmit power, and included 5dBi antenna. Supports up to 4km coverage in open environments, helping connect garden sensors, greenhouse nodes, garages, mailboxes, and remote monitoring points.
- NODE-RED DRAG-AND-DROP VISUAL AUTOMATION:Automation rules, data dashboards, and control logic can be built with little to no coding using the pre‑installed Node‑RED. Flows such as reading soil moisture, checking temperature, and sending relay commands are created through a visual interface — reducing setup time for maker, education, and prototype projects.
- EASY SETUP WITH WIFI AP & MQTT INTEGRATION: Configure the gateway via Wi-Fi AP mode using a laptop or mobile device. Built-in MQTT broker supports integration with Node-RED dashboards, and other MQTT-compatible platforms. Designed for indoor residential, educational, and prototyping use; not intended for outdoor installation.
A fallback is not automatically quality-preserving. As Arize AI puts it in its 2026 comparison: “A fallback model may keep an application online while producing responses that are less accurate, relevant, or safe.” Decide how your application should handle a fallback response, especially where accuracy or safety matters.

Compare the controls available on the specific plan you would use: credential handling, team or project keys, budgets, model and provider allowlists, data controls, and policy enforcement. A feature listed for a product is not enough; establish whether it is available in your deployment and plan, and how it behaves for the users and workloads you intend to govern.

4. Separate gateway observability from application evaluation
Request logs, traces, latency, and cost can help teams understand traffic passing through a gateway. They do not substitute for evaluating retrieval, tool use, agent decisions, or task success. If you need both operational visibility and answer-quality measurement, assess them as separate capabilities rather than treating gateway analytics as an end-to-end quality score.
5. Calculate total cost and integration effort
Separate model-provider inference charges from gateway credit fees or subscriptions and, for self-hosted deployments, infrastructure and operating costs. Then account for integration with your existing stack and the staff time needed to run it. Comparison pages report different catalog sizes, latency figures, and price structures; those claims are dated, and synthetic forwarding latency is not a measure of complete application speed. Recheck current pricing and terms instead of treating any one published figure as a lasting apples-to-apples benchmark.

What the published figures do—and do not—show
Vercel’s 2026 comparison reports that its own production index through April 2026 showed 3.5% of requests rescued by fallback and 5.1% of tokens rescued, which Vercel describes as more than one trillion tokens per month. These are company-reported results from Vercel’s own index, not an independent cross-vendor benchmark; they should not be read as the expected benefit for another gateway or workload.

A security note from the Cloud Security Alliance dated April 2026 described active exploitation of a LiteLLM issue and recommended version 1.83.7 or later plus credential rotation. That is dated incident guidance, not confirmation of current exposure or the latest remediation advice. Anyone evaluating a LiteLLM deployment should check current vendor and security advisories before deploying or upgrading.
Best Value
Vercel’s shortlist is useful as a map of products, but its author also sells one of them. Arize’s fit-based comparison provides another perspective, not a guarantee that a product will meet a particular team’s needs. Treat claims about product capabilities, maintenance, pricing, and ownership as time-sensitive and confirm them with the relevant vendor.
