The best live streaming software depends on what you are broadcasting: OBS Studio is a strong free choice for configurable desktop streams, Restream is useful when you need to route a broadcast to multiple platforms, and vMix is built for more involved Windows productions. There is no universal winner established by the available product information; choose by operating system, production needs, destinations, and how much setup you want to manage.
Choose software by the job
| Software | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Creators who want flexible scene-based streaming and recording without a software fee. | Free, open-source, and available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It supports scenes and sources, audio mixing, filters, transitions, hotkeys, Studio Mode preview, multiview, and plugins or scripts. OBS Studio |
| Streamlabs | Creators who want prebuilt overlays and alerts for donations, followers, or subscribers. | Restream’s February 2026 selection guide describes its desktop app as free to use. Streamlabs says it can import OBS scenes; some multistreaming and premium overlay features are associated with Ultra, so check current vendor terms. Streamlabs |
| Restream Studio / Restream | People who want a browser-based studio or a routing service between an encoder and several destinations. | Restream’s pricing page, accessed in 2026, says the free plan allows selection of two channels from 30+ social channels. Paid plans offer more channels and features. Platform eligibility and quality rules still apply. Restream pricing |
| vMix | Windows users producing broadcasts with multiple cameras, inputs, guests, switching, recording, or replay. | The vendor describes a Windows PC product with support for cameras, IP cameras, capture cards, audio devices, titles, video-call guests, replay, and multiple streaming destinations. Its product page presents a 60-day trial and purchase entry from $50 per month; confirm the edition and current terms. vMix |
| Ecamm, XSplit, Zoom, and other tools | Specific workflows such as Mac broadcasting, advanced streaming controls, or interactive meetings. | Restream’s selection guide describes Ecamm as a Mac broadcasting app, XSplit as streaming and recording software with engagement tools, and Zoom as an interactive option with chat, polls, and Q&A. It also mentions GoPro, Mevo, ProPresenter, and Blackmagic products for some setups. These are vendor-authored discovery descriptions, not independent comparative tests. A quick decision
- Choose OBS if you want detailed control over scenes and sources across desktop operating systems.
- Choose a browser studio or Streamlabs if prepared layouts and a less hands-on setup matter more than granular configuration.
- Consider Restream when you want a multistream routing layer; verify that each target account is eligible and that its rules allow your planned broadcast.
- Consider vMix when you need a fuller Windows production workflow with switching, guests, recording, or replay.
These distinctions describe documented features, not a benchmark ranking: the products have not been independently tested head to head here.

What to check before going live
Match the tool to your computer and production
- Confirm operating-system compatibility: OBS lists Windows, macOS, and Linux; vMix is for Windows PCs or laptops; Restream Studio runs in a browser.
- List the sources you need: camera, microphone, screen or window capture, images, browser content, or a capture card for streaming. OBS and vMix document capture-card input support.
- Decide whether you need a single destination or multiple platforms. An encoder can send to one platform directly; a service such as Restream can route an encoder feed to multiple destinations.
- Plan the production complexity. A solo screen share may need only a few scenes; a multi-camera production can call for switching, guest inputs, titles, and replay.
Check upload capacity and destination rules
Restream Help Center’s 2026 guidance says, “You should have 10 Mbps at minimum, while 25 Mbps or higher is recommended for Full HD streams.” Treat that as vendor guidance, not a guarantee: actual results also depend on resolution, frame rate, codec, scene complexity, network stability, and the receiving platform’s limits. Check the destination’s current quality and account-eligibility rules before planning the broadcast.

How to set up a first stream
- Choose a desktop encoder or browser studio. Use a desktop encoder for granular source and scene control; use a browser studio if its built-in layout and guest tools fit your show.
- Prepare your inputs. Connect and test your camera and microphone, and add any screen, window, image, browser, or capture-card sources you need.
- Build and preview the layout. In OBS, arrange sources into scenes, set transitions and hotkeys if useful, and use Studio Mode to preview a scene before taking it live. Streamlabs offers prepared overlays and alerts; a browser studio provides its own layout controls.
- Set audio deliberately. Confirm the intended microphone and desktop or source audio are active, adjust levels, and check filters or mixing so the audience can hear speech clearly without clipping.
- Connect the destination. Sign in or provide the destination’s encoder details as required. Keep stream keys private; anyone who obtains a key may be able to broadcast to the associated channel.
- Run a low-risk test. Use a private, unlisted, or otherwise test broadcast where the platform permits it. Verify picture, sound, sync, overlays, and stable upload before announcing a public stream.
- Go live and monitor. Watch the encoder and destination status during the broadcast. If the connection or output fails, stop safely, correct the cause, and test again rather than assuming viewers are receiving a healthy stream.
How to multistream with Restream and an encoder
Restream’s encoder setup instructions, published July 31, 2026, use an RTMP URL and stream key to connect third-party software. Labels vary by encoder; look for settings named “stream,” “service,” or “destination.”

- In Restream, create a new Encoder | RTMP stream.
- Enable the destination channels you want to use, then set the stream title, description, or thumbnail as needed.
- Copy the RTMP URL and stream key shown for the encoder connection. Treat the key as a password and do not share it publicly.
- Open your encoder’s stream or destination settings and paste in the RTMP URL and stream key.
- Start the encoder, then confirm that the feed appears at the intended destinations and that their individual rules permit the broadcast.
Restream’s pricing page currently states that its free tier permits two selected channels from 30+ social channels; features and plan limits can change, so verify the live terms before relying on a particular allowance.

The image or audio is missing
Confirm the correct source is active in the scene or layout, the intended camera or microphone is selected, and the source is not muted. Check levels and preview the scene before restarting the broadcast.
The stream stutters or drops
Check upload stability, not just a single speed reading. Restream’s 10 Mbps minimum and 25 Mbps Full HD recommendation are guidance, and higher resolution or frame rate can demand more capacity. Reduce production demands or improve network stability, then repeat a test broadcast.

The stream looks different across platforms
Destinations can impose different quality and eligibility limits. Confirm each platform’s current rules and settings; a routing service cannot override them.
A guest, overlay, or advanced production feature is unavailable
Check which app, edition, or plan provides the feature. Streamlabs identifies some multistreaming and premium overlay features with Ultra, while vMix’s product editions and licensing determine availability.

Copyright and channel eligibility
Before broadcasting music, video, game footage, or other material you did not create, make sure you have the rights and permissions required for live use on the destination. A stream key and software do not grant content rights. YouTube’s current rules can also affect live-stream eligibility, monetization, and reused content decisions; check the platform’s policies for the channel and content type before scheduling a broadcast. For a practical preflight, use the copyright safety checklist.
