A headless Linux VPS can keep a YouTube stream running continuously from prerecorded church videos: use FFmpeg to send a compatible media loop to YouTube and systemd to start and supervise the encoder. For an actual live service, first work out how the camera and soundboard mix will reach the VPS; a prerecorded-file setup does not capture a live service for you. There is no universally correct VPS size: transcoding workload and the provider’s network allowance are key variables.
Choose the signal path before choosing the VPS
For a prerecorded loop
Store the prepared video on the server, have FFmpeg read and send it to YouTube, and run FFmpeg as a systemd service. This is a practical community-demonstrated pattern for looping local files on an Ubuntu VPS, not a YouTube-certified architecture or a guarantee that any particular server plan will work. The Ubuntu VPS example describes this kind of implementation.

For a live church service
A live service is a different workflow: the camera picture and soundboard mix must first be captured and delivered to the encoder. Decide where that happens and how the signal gets to the VPS before configuring YouTube output. The prerecorded-file example does not establish a universal camera-to-VPS method. Do not assume that installing FFmpeg on a remote server makes it receive a church’s camera or mixer.
Set YouTube’s output parameters
YouTube Help lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS to encrypt the connection in transit. Its current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, with AAC or MP3 audio. For stereo audio, it recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. YouTube’s live encoder settings are the source for these specifications.

H.264 bitrate recommendations
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 ingest bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommendations, not a measurement of what a VPS or its network can sustain. Choose resolution and frame rate the source, encoder, connection, and server can handle consistently. If a service is mostly a fixed camera shot, do not choose 60 fps or a higher resolution without a reason and a successful test.
Rate control and keyframes
- Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends.
- Set the keyframe interval to two seconds where the encoder allows it; YouTube recommends two seconds and specifies a maximum of four seconds.
- Use a supported video codec and audio format, then verify the received stream in YouTube’s live control room.
Before relying on the setup for a service, test with representative speech, music, movement, and transitions. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health and messages during the event.
Build a headless prerecorded loop with FFmpeg and systemd
The following is an operational outline, not a copy-and-paste FFmpeg command: the exact input handling and encoding options depend on whether the media is already compatible, whether it needs transcoding, and how the loop should behave at file boundaries. The cited Ubuntu community example demonstrates FFmpeg with systemd for looping local media; it does not establish one optimal configuration for every church.

- UPGRADED COOLING FAN - The G3 Ultra has upgraded the cooling fan to reduce fan noise and thermals. We are using an upgraded thermal paste as well to help reduce heat on the CPU.
- Prepare the media. Put the recorded video on the VPS and confirm its video and audio formats, resolution, frame rate, and duration. Decide whether it can be passed through or needs transcoding. Test that the selected playback method behaves as intended when the file ends and repeats.
- Create a restricted key configuration. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and obtain its stream key and ingest details. Treat the key like a password: keep it out of public scripts, repositories, screenshots, and support messages. Store it in a configuration mechanism readable only by the service account that needs it. The community example explicitly warns against committing a real key.
- Configure FFmpeg for the chosen output. Set the RTMPS destination, video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate mode, and two-second keyframes as applicable. Avoid unnecessary transcoding: it increases CPU demand. Confirm the output is within YouTube’s current recommendations and compatible with the source.
- Run FFmpeg under systemd. Define a service with the correct working directory, service account, restricted access to the key configuration, and an explicit start command. Enable it to start at boot and configure process restart behavior for unexpected exits. Validate the unit before relying on it, then inspect service state and logs after starting it.
- Verify at YouTube, not only on Linux. Confirm YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream and check its messages. A systemd service can show as active even if YouTube is not receiving healthy video or audio.
- Rehearse failures and handoffs. Test what happens when a file finishes, a source file is unavailable, FFmpeg exits, the VPS reboots, or its network connection drops. Decide who checks YouTube stream health and how the church operator will know that recovery is needed.
Keep the stream running without mistaking restarts for resilience
Systemd can start a process at boot and restart it after an exit, but process supervision is not the same as end-to-end stream recovery. FFmpeg may remain running while the output is stalled or YouTube reports an unhealthy ingest. Check both Linux service status/logs and YouTube’s stream-health indicators.
- Media ends or does not repeat: test the chosen loop behavior with the actual files; do not assume a service restart is the right way to bridge every file boundary.
- Encoder exits: inspect the service logs for missing files, invalid output settings, permissions, or resource exhaustion, then correct the cause before relying on restart behavior.
- YouTube shows no healthy signal: check the RTMPS endpoint and key configuration, encoder output, outbound connectivity, and YouTube’s displayed messages.
- The VPS loses network access: a local restart policy cannot restore a failed network path. Confirm provider recovery behavior and determine how stream health will be checked after connectivity returns.
- The stream must stop or be replaced: define who controls the YouTube broadcast lifecycle and how the encoder and YouTube live session will be coordinated. The cited sources do not certify a universal watchdog or automatic lifecycle arrangement.
Estimate VPS capacity and total cost from the workload
No fixed VPS size, provider, monthly price, or uptime guarantee follows from the available technical guidance. If the server simply passes through compatible media, its processing load differs from a workflow that transcodes continuously. Measure or test the actual workload rather than selecting a plan from resolution alone.
Check the provider’s current outbound traffic allowance and charges against the planned bitrate and continuous run time. As a rough planning method, multiply the stream’s bitrate by its hours online to estimate data sent, then compare that estimate with the provider’s terms. Include any storage needed for the video files. Test the chosen VPS under representative conditions and confirm YouTube health before making it the church’s unattended setup.

StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it is not a camera-to-YouTube live-service capture system. For a genuinely live church service, arrange the camera and mixer signal path first.
