For sermons looped directly on YouTube, a church does not need a month’s worth of local storage. YouTube repeats the hosted video; it does not create a new local copy for every playback. If the church also wants an archive or offline copies, size that storage by the distinct files it will keep—not by how many times they play.
Looping a YouTube sermon does not multiply local storage
YouTube’s loop control repeats a video or playlist hosted on YouTube. The same media is played again, so a month of looping does not require 30 days’ worth of duplicate sermon files on a church computer or drive. YouTube documents loop controls for computers and mobile devices, plus repeat controls on TVs and game consoles; the exact steps depend on the device. See YouTube Help: loop videos or playlists.

That answers the playback-storage question. It does not answer how much space the church should reserve to retain its own original recordings, nor how much internet data viewers or the church’s playback device will use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSize a local sermon archive by the files you keep
For an archive, add the actual sizes of the distinct sermon files the church plans to retain. Then allow for its retention period and backup approach. A sermon played repeatedly is still one archived file. If possible, use the exported file sizes rather than estimating from resolution alone.

Estimate from bitrate when file sizes are not available
A rough planning formula for video data is:
Approximate decimal GB = bitrate in Mbps × duration in seconds ÷ 8,000
YouTube’s current upload guidance recommends 8 Mbps for standard-frame-rate 1080p SDR video. At that bitrate, one hour works out to about 3.6 GB of video data. This is arithmetic based on the recommendation, not a promised export size; it excludes audio and container overhead. YouTube’s corresponding standard-frame-rate SDR recommendations include 5 Mbps for 720p, 2.5 Mbps for 480p, and 1 Mbps for 360p. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.

- Massive capacity, up to 22TB capacity. (1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment.).Specific uses: Personal
- Includes software for device management and backup with password protection (Download and installation required. Terms and conditions apply. User account registration may be required.)
- 256-bit AES hardware encryption
- SuperSpeed USB (5 Gbps); USB 2.0 compatible
- Trusted storage built with WD reliability
For example, if a church retains ten one-hour files encoded at the recommended 1080p video bitrate, the rough video-only estimate is 36 GB before audio and container overhead. Actual files may differ, so check the file properties or export settings and leave room for backups if those are part of the church’s plan.

An external hard drive may be useful for keeping master files or backups, but it is not needed just to loop a YouTube-hosted sermon. Choose capacity only after totaling the files to retain and deciding how many copies and how much history to preserve.

Offline downloads are different from looping online
Downloaded videos use storage on the phone, tablet, or other supported device. Whether a sermon can be downloaded depends on the video, account, location, and device; quality also affects space, with higher-quality downloads taking more storage. YouTube’s guidance explains how to download videos to an SD card on supported phones and tablets and covers offline videos, availability, and reconnection rules. Check the church’s own account, country, device, and each video’s eligibility before relying on offline playback.
Do not confuse storage with streaming data
Local storage is space used to keep files or downloads. Internet data is consumed while media is streamed; it is not the same as saving another copy on a drive. YouTube’s approximate sustained playback-speed guidance is 5 Mbps for 1080p HD, 2.5 Mbps for 720p HD, 1.1 Mbps for 480p SD, 0.7 Mbps for 360p SD, and 20 Mbps for 4K. These are playback bandwidth guidelines, not file-size estimates. See YouTube Help on video playback speed.

Or let it run in the cloud
If the church’s goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel playing uploaded sermons rather than looping a regular YouTube video, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded videos streaming to YouTube, not camera broadcasts. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
