OBS Studio is the best-supported starting point for a Linux gaming replay channel: it can stream gameplay to YouTube, record locally, and save recent action from a replay buffer. These are separate outputs that need separate setup. OBS does not have a verified, universal recipe for running unattended as a resilient service at Linux boot, so a genuinely always-on setup also depends on your Linux session, power, network, restart behavior, and YouTube stream health.
What “gaming replay channel” can mean
There are two different workflows behind the phrase. A continuous YouTube stream broadcasts gameplay or other prepared video while a local replay buffer temporarily holds recent gameplay so you can save a clip on demand. OBS can support both, but saving a replay-buffer clip does not automatically upload it to YouTube, and configuring a live stream does not by itself save recent gameplay.

- Always-on live stream: OBS sends the configured video and audio output to YouTube while the computer and streaming setup are running.
- Replay capture: OBS keeps a rolling buffer and saves it when you trigger the configured hotkey.
- Both: Configure and test the live output and the replay buffer independently; ensure the gaming PC can handle the game, encoding, and recording workload together.
Why OBS Studio is the Linux starting point
OBS brings scenes and sources, streaming and local recording controls, replay-buffer hotkeys, and documented Linux support for NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync. Which hardware encoders are available depends on the GPU, installed drivers, and OBS build; check the encoder options in your installation rather than assuming a particular one will appear.
There is no universal encoder winner for every Linux gaming PC. Compare options by whether your installed system supports them, their visual quality at the upload bitrate you can sustain, their CPU and GPU impact while the game runs, YouTube’s settings for the chosen codec and resolution, and compatibility with your local editing tools. OBS notes that older hardware generations may reduce performance impact at a quality cost. Its OBS 31.0 NVENC notes also caution that “Ultra High Quality” tuning is aimed at live-action artifacts such as camera noise, is not recommended for gaming, and significantly reduces throughput.

Configure OBS for YouTube and local replays
1. Build a scene that captures the game and sound
Create a scene in OBS and add the sources needed for your channel, such as the game and audio devices. A capture card is only relevant when you need to bring video from a console or a second PC into OBS; ordinary same-PC game capture does not require one. Check that the game image, desktop or game audio, and microphone—if used—are present and at appropriate levels.
2. Set the video layout and frame rate
The base canvas is the working layout for your scene; the scaled output resolution is the resolution sent in the stream or recording. Choose a canvas and output that fit the content and your system, then set a frame rate that matches the intended stream and the PC’s capacity. Sixty frames per second can tax the system more than 30 fps; test with the game running before relying on the configuration.
3. Choose an encoder and match YouTube’s ingest settings
YouTube’s live-ingest guidance, inspected on 2026-10-03, accepts H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, supports up to 60 fps, recommends CBR, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). YouTube recommends RTMPS. Select a codec, resolution, and frame rate together, then use the bitrate guidance for that exact combination rather than treating one bitrate as right for every stream.

| H.264 | 17 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 34 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| AV1 or HEVC | 12 Mbps | 10 Mbps | 24 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published recommended video bitrates in its guidance inspected on 2026-10-03, not a guarantee that a particular Linux PC or internet connection can sustain them. YouTube’s full current table covers additional combinations and should be checked when choosing other settings. For SDR, its guidance specifies Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth. For HDR it specifies 10-bit, recommends HEVC, and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Do not make HDR the default unless the entire capture, encode, and ingest path supports it.
YouTube’s other listed guidance includes square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, and audio at 44.1 kHz stereo or 48 kHz 5.1. Listed audio bitrates are 128 kbps for stereo and 384 kbps for 5.1; 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC. AAC or MP3 audio is supported. Use settings that your encoder and stream path actually expose, and check YouTube’s current guidance because requirements can change.
4. Add the YouTube stream destination and key
In OBS’s streaming settings, choose the YouTube ingest destination and enter the stream key provided in YouTube Studio. Treat the key as a password: do not show it in a stream, screenshot, or recording. Use YouTube’s current RTMPS option when available, and verify the destination and key before starting the broadcast.

5. Enable the replay buffer and save hotkey
In OBS’s Output settings, enable Replay Buffer and configure its duration and memory or storage limits to suit your available system resources. Assign a hotkey to Save Replay Buffer; OBS also documents separate start- and stop-buffer hotkeys. Start the buffer before playing, then test that the save hotkey creates a clip where expected. A saved clip remains a local recording unless you separately upload or publish it.
6. Choose a resilient local recording format
For sustained local capture, OBS recommends MKV as its default for most use cases: it supports OBS encoder combinations, and an unfinished file remains playable or recoverable after an interruption. Direct MP4/MOV recording can be more compatible with editing software and platforms, but a file may be unrecoverable if writing stops before finalization. OBS describes fragmented MP4/MOV as a more interruption-resilient option with broader compatibility than MKV, subject to codec and editing-tool support. If another workflow needs a different container, record in a resilient format first and remux or convert afterward when appropriate.
OBS’s format guide, dated 2023-03-26, recommends the best available hardware encoder for high-quality local recording and ranks AV1 above HEVC above H.264 in its quality-versus-file-size advice. It says real-time AV1 software encoding requires high-end CPUs and gives recent AMD RX 7000, NVIDIA RTX 40, and Intel Arc hardware as examples of AV1-capable classes. Those are examples from that dated guide, not a complete current compatibility list.

7. Test the whole game-like workload
Run a private or otherwise controlled test before relying on the setup. YouTube advises testing representative movement and audio and monitoring stream health during the event. A static desktop does not reveal how fast gameplay motion, game audio, microphone levels, encoder load, local recording, and network upload behave together. Check both the received stream and the saved replay file.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What an always-on Linux setup still requires
OBS’s overview describes automatic reconnect as an available setting, which is worth reviewing for a long-running broadcast. Reconnect is not a promise of uninterrupted service. A continuous channel also relies on the machine staying powered, the Linux session and OBS remaining available, network access, and YouTube accepting the stream.
The available OBS guidance does not establish a universal boot-time service or unattended restart recipe for Linux. Auto-start behavior and service management vary by distribution and desktop environment. If unattended operation is essential, validate the specific machine’s boot, login/session, OBS launch, game or media source, network recovery, and YouTube reconnection behavior as one system; do not assume that opening OBS manually proves it will recover after a reboot.

Common problems and what to check
- No hardware encoder appears: The GPU generation, driver installation, or OBS build may not support that encoder. Check the installed OBS encoder list and the Linux driver stack; choose an available encoder and test its impact under gameplay.
- Stream health is poor or the stream drops: Confirm the stream key and ingest destination, compare the output codec and bitrate with YouTube’s guidance for the selected resolution and frame rate, and test whether the connection can sustain the upload. Review OBS’s automatic reconnect setting and YouTube’s stream-health indicators.
- Gameplay stutters or frame rate falls: Encoding and recording add workload while the game is running. Test at the intended output frame rate and resolution, compare 60 fps with 30 fps if needed, and check whether the chosen encoder leaves enough system headroom.
- The replay hotkey saves nothing: Confirm Replay Buffer is enabled and started, the save hotkey is assigned and not conflicting with the game, and OBS has room and a valid destination for the clip.
- A recording is damaged after interruption: Direct MP4/MOV can fail to finalize if writing is interrupted. Prefer MKV for resilience or consider fragmented MP4/MOV where your editing workflow supports it.
- Video works but audio is missing or unsuitable: Verify the selected audio devices and levels in the scene, use an audio format YouTube accepts, and observe its AAC-only condition for 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS.
- Booting the PC does not restore the channel: OBS’s general overview is not a distribution-specific unattended startup guide. Verify the actual Linux session and launch/restart setup on the distribution and desktop you use.
Cost and storage considerations
OBS is the software recommendation here; the cited material does not establish distro-specific installation commands, performance benchmarks for a named game or GPU, a universal always-on deployment configuration, or a fixed amount of local storage. Storage needs depend on your recording settings and how long you keep files. If you retain many recordings, an external SSD is an optional storage choice, but capacity should follow your chosen bitrate, resolution, and retention period rather than a generic prescription.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel playing uploaded gaming videos, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos, not live camera capture, and streams to YouTube only. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
For an OBS-based live gaming broadcast from a running Linux PC, OBS remains the supported DIY choice described above. StreamNeo is a different fit: it keeps uploaded video looping without leaving a computer or home connection running.
