For lower-latency Steam Remote Play on Linux, start with the network, measure the stream, then adjust encoding, bandwidth, and resolution one at a time. Steam recommends connecting the host PC to the router by Ethernet. There is no universally best Linux preset: the right settings depend on your GPU, driver, network, game, and client.
1. Establish a stable network baseline
Connect the Linux host directly to your router by Ethernet if possible. Steam says a wired connection gives the best result and warns that simultaneous Wi-Fi transmission from both the host PC and the streaming client can cause interference. If the host is already wired, there is no need to buy a cable just for this guide.

If either device must use Wi-Fi, favor 5 GHz when the signal is strong enough. Keep devices within reasonable range of the router, reduce obstructions, and look for a less congested channel. Steam recommends an 802.11ac router, or 802.11n on 5 GHz as a next-best option. Wider channel settings can increase throughput but are more vulnerable to distance and radio-frequency noise; they are options to test, not mandatory low-latency settings. On the streaming client, enable Steam’s Remote Play performance overlay. Run the same game scene before and after each adjustment, watching for large spikes in network timing (the cyan line in Steam’s guidance). Change one setting at a time so you can tell whether it improved the stream or merely shifted the problem.

3. Test Linux hardware encoding
On the host, open Steam’s Remote Play advanced host options and test hardware encoding for the available GPU. Check the overlay details to see which encoder Steam is actually using. Valve’s November 2, 2021 client update documented Linux VA-API hardware encoding for AMD and Intel, with AMD/Intel hardware encoding controllable in the host options. Support and results can differ across distributions, GPUs, drivers, compositors, and Steam packaging formats, so compare against encoding disabled if the stream becomes unstable or the encoder path appears not to work.
The same update describes DMABUF PipeWire capture support, requiring 32-bit libgbm.so.1 and the -pipewire-dmabuf launch option, as well as PipeWire capture up to 4K. These are implementation details, not a guarantee that every Linux setup supports the same capture path. Valve’s Steam client update

4. Tune bandwidth to the connection
Steam’s troubleshooting method is to begin with a 3 Mbit/s bandwidth limit, then raise it gradually until hitches appear and return to the last stable level. Treat 3 Mbit/s as a testing starting point, not a recommended final bitrate or a guarantee: the suitable limit depends on stream resolution, refresh rate, game, and network conditions.

If the overlay points to low streaming frame rate, do not assume the network is at fault. Steam says low streaming frame rate is commonly caused by a low game frame rate or slow host encoding. Test a lower stream resolution such as 1280×720; if needed, reduce the game’s render resolution too. Steam’s troubleshooting also suggests trying the game with V-sync off. These are diagnostic changes, not settings that every player should leave enabled. Steam’s low-framerate troubleshooting

6. Reduce wireless contention and check router options
During a test, pause other high-bandwidth traffic where practical. Check for router firmware updates, and consider prioritizing the host and client with Steam’s Remote Play host options or the router’s QoS/device-priority controls. First try improving placement, band, and channel conditions on the equipment you already have; a router change is only relevant if the current device or wireless environment is the bottleneck.

Port changes are not routine latency tuning. If Remote Play has connection or firewall problems, Steam’s network guidance lists UDP ports 27031 and 27036 and TCP ports 27036 and 27037. Consult the guidance for the relevant host/client setup before changing firewall rules. Steam’s network and port guidance

If the visual diagnostics do not explain a Linux client problem, Steam identifies /tmp/streaming_client.log as the client log location. The file is a troubleshooting aid; its contents need to be examined before drawing conclusions about the cause. Steam Remote Play FAQ

Best Value
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
A practical tuning order
- Wire the host to the router if possible; otherwise improve the 5 GHz Wi-Fi signal and reduce interference.
- Enable the client performance overlay and note where timing spikes or low frame rate occur.
- Test the host’s available hardware encoder, then compare with it disabled if the result is unstable.
- Adjust the bandwidth limit in small increments, using Steam’s 3 Mbit/s starting point only as a troubleshooting baseline.
- If frame rate or encoding is limiting performance, test 720p and then consider lowering the game’s render resolution or turning off V-sync.
- Retest the same scene after every change, keeping only changes that improve your actual setup.
