Confirm the absence, check how the replacement is being used, and verify the latest practice reports, inactive lists, and your league’s availability before submitting a claim. The examples below are dated 2026 waiver snapshots, not current recommendations.
How to find the receiver who actually benefits
- Confirm the starter’s status. Separate a confirmed absence or injured-reserve placement from a tentative injury timeline. If the starter’s return is uncertain, a backup can be a short-term priority, but reassess when clearer news arrives.
- Look for inherited opportunity. Check routes, targets, target share, and whether the receiver has already filled the role. A depth-chart label by itself does not show that a player will receive meaningful work. RotoWire says its depth charts are updated for roster changes such as NFL inactives, while also cautioning that official team charts can be misleading; use charts alongside observed usage.
- Separate role evidence from results. Catches, yards, and touchdowns tell you what happened in a game. Routes and target share help show whether involvement might continue. One productive game is not proof of a lasting breakout.
- Apply your league’s context. Check whether the receiver is available, how your scoring format rewards receptions and touchdowns, how deep your roster is, your waiver-budget constraints, and the matchup. Published roster rates below are snapshots from the cited articles, not a measure of availability in your league today.
- Recheck before filing a claim. Practice news, inactive lists, and role changes can alter the recommendation, especially if the starter returns or another receiver takes over the routes.
Dated examples: what injury-related opportunity looked like in 2026
NFL.com’s Week 2, Week 3, and Week 4 waiver articles were published September 14, September 21, and September 28, 2026, respectively. Their player notes describe those weekly snapshots; they do not confirm anyone’s status or role now.

| Receiver and snapshot | Opportunity or injury context reported then | What the example shows |
|---|---|---|
| Mack Hollins, New England — Week 4, 2026 | NFL.com described Hollins as New England’s short-term WR1 while reporting that A.J. Brown was out into mid-October. In the game cited, Hollins caught 6 of 9 targets for 87 yards, had a 19.5% team target share, and recorded 2.3 yards per route run. His article-listed roster rate was 5%. | Check whether the replacement is receiving a substantial share of the passing work, while treating both the injury timeline and metrics as dated article reporting rather than a guarantee. |
| Keenan Allen, Indianapolis — Week 4, 2026 | With Alec Pierce on injured reserve, Allen had a season-high 9 targets and caught 6 for 63 yards and a touchdown. NFL.com said he would be playable that week and likely for a few weeks beyond; that was a dated projection. His article-listed roster rate was 24%. | A confirmed injured-reserve placement can clarify the opportunity window, but any projected duration still needs fresh verification. |
| Kalif Raymond, Chicago — Week 4, 2026 | NFL.com reported 6 catches on 7 targets for 90 yards and a touchdown in the latest game discussed, a 23.1% team target share, and team leads at that point of 19 catches and 214 receiving yards. His article-listed roster rate was 10%. The article also flagged a difficult immediate matchup against the Jets. | A strong recent role and production can make a player worth considering, but matchup is a separate factor and should not erase the usage evidence—or be mistaken for a long-term outlook. |
| Devaughn Vele, New Orleans — Weeks 2 and 3, 2026 | NFL.com linked Vele’s opportunity to Jordyn Tyson’s hamstring absence. The Week 2 article said Vele had caught 7 of 9 targets for 69 yards and a goal-line touchdown in Week 1, and projected him as the WR2 until at least mid-October, possibly longer depending on Tyson’s recovery. The Week 3 article reported 12 catches on 16 targets for 133 yards and a touchdown across two weeks without Tyson, while noting Chris Olave remained the leading target. | Follow the replacement’s usage over multiple games, but account for other receivers who may still command the largest share. Both articles’ injury outlooks and statistics are historical snapshots. |
| Dontayvion Wicks, Philadelphia — Weeks 3 and 4, 2026 | The Week 3 article cited 2.8 yards per route run and noted his route volume. In Week 4, NFL.com cited 2.3 yards per route run and a 31.2% air-yards share despite a disappointing game, presenting him as a future-oriented pickup. These notes did not identify him as the direct replacement for a specific injured starter. | Underlying involvement can merit attention even when a recent box score is poor; do not mislabel a future-oriented pickup as an injury-driven replacement. |

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Expected routes and targets: Is the player projected to be on the field, and has the expanded usage appeared in actual games?
- Role evidence: Look at routes, targets, target share, and whether the offense has already used the receiver in the injured starter’s role.
- Absence certainty and duration: A confirmed absence or injured-reserve placement is different from a speculative return timeline.
- Recent production and scoring chances: Consider catches, receiving yards, touchdowns, and red-zone involvement without treating a single game as proof of a stable role.
- Matchup and passing context: Evaluate the coming opponent and the team’s passing situation separately from the player’s opportunity.
- League cost and fit: Check availability, scoring format, roster needs, and waiver cost. The cited weekly articles do not establish universal bid values or rankings that apply to every league.
What these examples can—and cannot—tell you
The target shares, yards per route run, air-yards share, box scores, roster rates, and injury timelines above are figures reported in dated NFL.com waiver articles, not independent population statistics. They illustrate how to assess individual situations; they do not establish a general success rate for injury-driven waiver claims. RotoWire’s depth-chart page, dated October 4, 2026, describes its own update practices and paid features, including full NFL depth charts, weekly projections, custom fantasy rankings, and rest-of-season projections. A depth-chart or projection tool can be an optional research aid, but for a live claim, verify status with current team or NFL injury news and confirm availability on your fantasy platform.
