Zorin OS 18.1 is a strong alternative if you want guided suggestions for Windows apps or prefer its lighter XFCE-based Lite edition. Neither distribution guarantees that every Windows app or device will work, so try a live USB and check the things you rely on before installing.
Which Linux distribution should a Windows user choose?
For a familiar, configurable desktop, start by comparing Linux Mint 22.3 Zena with Zorin OS 18.1. Both are based on Ubuntu long-term-support releases and have support into 2029. The choice is less about finding a perfect Windows clone than picking a desktop you can use comfortably and verifying that your hardware and essential software work.

| Distribution | Desktop and editions | Base and support | Best fit | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Linux Mint 22.3 Zena | Cinnamon, MATE, and Xfce | Ubuntu Noble base; supported through April 2029 | A conventional, configurable desktop as a general-purpose first Linux system | Proprietary ATI/Nvidia drivers are not installed by default; check graphics and peripherals in a live session. |
| Zorin OS 18.1 | GNOME Shell on Core and Pro; XFCE on Lite | Ubuntu 24.04 LTS base; updates and security patches through June 1, 2029 | Someone who values Windows-app guidance or wants the Lite edition | Windows App Support is optional and is not a promise that arbitrary Windows programs will work. |
These are supported-release details published by the projects and current as of October 4, 2026; release names and support dates can change. There is not enough comparable evidence here to rank these systems by speed, ease of use, gaming performance, or compatibility.

Linux Mint describes itself as “designed to be comfortable and easy to use but also powerful and configurable.” That is the project’s own description, not an independent usability test. Its Cinnamon edition is a natural first edition to try if you want a conventional desktop with a taskbar, application menu, and window controls. Mint also lists MATE and Xfce editions, so you can compare its desktop options before installing.

Mint’s FAQ lists a minimum of 2 GB RAM, 20 GB of disk space, and a 1024×768 display; it recommends 4 GB RAM and 100 GB of disk space for comfortable use. These are project-published figures, not a guarantee of how a particular PC will perform. See the Linux Mint FAQ for the requirements and other setup details.
If your computer has Nvidia or ATI graphics, pay attention to the live-session test: Mint says proprietary drivers are easy to install but are not installed by default. A desktop that starts is a useful first check, but it does not establish that every graphics feature or peripheral is supported.

Zorin OS: consider it for app guidance or the Lite edition
Zorin OS 18.1 is based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, uses Linux kernel 6.17, and is built for 64-bit Intel or AMD processors. Zorin lists software updates and security patches through June 1, 2029. Its Core and Pro editions use GNOME Shell; Lite uses XFCE. These details are on Zorin’s technical-details page.

Zorin’s Windows-app feature is best understood as guidance, not universal compatibility. Its app database can recognize installer files for more than 240 apps and suggest native Linux apps or alternatives. Support for .exe and .msi installers is listed as optional Windows App Support. Zorin’s April 15, 2026 release announcement says migrating users receive “tailored guidance on how to use the most compatible versions” of favourite apps. That can help you look for a workable route, but it does not mean every Windows program runs on Linux.

Zorin OS 18.1 minimum installation requirements are a 1 GHz dual-core 64-bit Intel or AMD processor, 2 GB RAM, and an 800×600 display. Storage minimums differ by edition: 15 GB for Core, 35 GB for Education, and 45 GB for Pro. Zorin presents these as installation minimums, not as a promise of comfortable performance on every machine; consult its download and requirements page for edition-specific details.
Zorin says 18.1 brings updated kernel and driver support for selected hardware, including Nvidia, Intel Xe3, AMD hybrid laptops, ThinkPads, Galaxy Books, controllers, and gaming handhelds. That is a list of reported improvements, not a guarantee for every model. Zorin also reported more than 3.3 million downloads since Zorin OS 18 launched; that is the publisher’s download count, not a count of unique users or an independent popularity comparison. Both figures come from its April 15, 2026 release announcement.

Check your apps and hardware before switching
A Linux desktop can replace many everyday Windows tasks, but compatibility depends on the exact application, device, and workflow. Make a short list of the things you cannot do without, then test them in a live session or investigate their Linux alternatives before moving your files or deleting Windows.
- Applications: Check whether each essential program has a Linux version or a suitable alternative. Do not assume Microsoft Office desktop, a specialist Windows-only application, or any particular .exe installer will work.
- Games: Verify the specific titles and their anti-cheat requirements; a general Linux distribution recommendation cannot establish that a game will run.
- Devices: Test Wi-Fi, sound, graphics, printers, controllers, fingerprint readers, and other important peripherals. Support can vary by exact model.
- Power and portability: On a laptop, check sleep and wake, battery behaviour, external displays, and any hardware-specific controls you use.
- Graphics: If you use discrete Nvidia or ATI graphics, check driver availability and performance after installation as well as whether the live desktop starts.
For Zorin, its app suggestions may point you toward native apps or alternatives; for either system, an actual test with your essential hardware and workflow is more informative than a general compatibility claim.

Try Linux from USB before installing
A live USB lets you start the distribution without first replacing Windows. Zorin’s installation guide explains creating installer media, testing the live system, backing up, and choosing between installing alongside an existing operating system or erasing the disk. A live system runs more slowly from USB than it does once installed, so treat it as a compatibility check rather than a final performance test.
- Choose an edition and obtain its installer. Use the project’s official download page for the distribution and edition you want to test.
- Prepare a USB drive. Zorin specifies at least 4 GB for Core or Lite, and 16 GB for Pro, Pro Lite, or Education. Creating the installer erases the selected USB drive, so copy off anything you need first.
- Boot the PC from the USB drive. Use your PC maker’s boot menu or startup instructions. Menu keys and firmware options differ by computer.
- Test the live desktop. Check the display, Wi-Fi, audio, keyboard, touchpad, graphics, and any essential peripheral or workflow you can reasonably test without installation.
- Back up important files before installing. Zorin recommends copying them to external storage or cloud storage. This is an option for protecting a backup, not a required purchase.
- Choose an installation path carefully. If you want to keep Windows, select the option to install alongside the existing operating system when it is available and appropriate. Erasing the disk removes its existing contents. Read the installer’s disk choices before confirming.
Dual-booting can preserve access to Windows, but it is a disk-partitioning change, not a substitute for a backup. If you are unsure which disk or partition an installer will change, stop rather than guessing.
Make the choice based on your PC and priorities
- Choose Mint 22.3 Cinnamon first if you want a conventional, configurable desktop and do not need Zorin’s particular app-guidance feature.
- Try Zorin OS 18.1 if guided Windows-app suggestions appeal to you, or if you want to compare its XFCE-based Lite edition.
- Keep Windows available during the transition if you still depend on an application or device you have not verified on Linux.
- Do not choose by minimum requirements alone. They establish a published installation floor, not a comparative performance ranking or a comfort guarantee.
Install only after the live USB has given you a useful check of your hardware and you have backed up files you cannot afford to lose.
