For a self-hosted internet radio setup, Liquidsoap generates and encodes the audio, and Icecast relays it to listeners. Run Liquidsoap as a supervised service so it can start at boot and restart if it stops. These are signs of software support, not proof of a distribution-specific uptime or performance advantage.

Choose Ubuntu Server instead if you already know how to maintain it or prefer Canonical’s server documentation, which focuses on the latest LTS version. Familiarity can make routine updates and troubleshooting easier, so there is no need to switch an existing, maintained Ubuntu server just for this use case.

How the audio-streaming setup fits together
Liquidsoap generates the feed
Liquidsoap takes the configured audio source, generates and encodes the stream, and sends it to a streaming server. Its documented generator-to-server flow can continue whether or not listeners are connected. The exact source, audio format, playlist arrangement, and metadata depend on your meditation material and are not specified by the distribution choice.
Icecast relays it to listeners
Icecast receives the feed and serves it from a mount point, the address listeners use to tune in. One Icecast server can host multiple streams. Liquidsoap’s Icecast documentation explains the connection between the generator, server, and mount point: Streaming to Icecast and Shoutcast.

Keep the stream running after reboot
For continuous operation, run Liquidsoap in the foreground under a service manager such as systemd, rather than relying on an open terminal or an interactive login. Liquidsoap’s production guidance includes a service example that waits for network availability, runs under a dedicated liquidsoap user, restarts the process, and can be enabled at boot.
- Check the script before deploying it. Run
liquidsoap --checkagainst your Liquidsoap script to catch script errors before restarting the service. - Configure a systemd unit. Follow the current Liquidsoap production guide for a service that runs Liquidsoap in the foreground, uses a dedicated service account, and waits for network availability as appropriate.
- Enable and start the service. The documented example uses
systemctl enable --now radio. Replaceradioif your unit has a different name. - Confirm recovery behavior. Check that the unit is active after startup and that its restart policy is configured so systemd can recover the process if it exits.
Liquidsoap’s production documentation puts the operating pattern plainly: “In production, run liquidsoap in the foreground under a service manager, such as systemd on Linux or launchd on macOS.”

Secure the Icecast connection before exposing it
- Replace the example Icecast passwords before making the server publicly accessible. Liquidsoap’s quickstart specifically warns about changing example credentials.
- Treat the Liquidsoap source password as a secret; do not deploy copied example credentials.
- Plan firewall rules, TLS termination, software updates, and access control for your own deployment. The cited quickstart is not a complete hardening guide, so consult current documentation for your chosen setup.
What this recommendation does not decide
The best distribution can change if the home server is actually a virtualization host, container platform, NAS appliance, or an existing managed system. The recommendation here assumes an ordinary Linux host running Liquidsoap and Icecast directly.
The available project guidance does not establish minimum CPU or memory, required upload bandwidth, listener capacity, uptime figures, or a performance ranking among distributions. Those values depend on the audio configuration, audience, network, and deployment; do not infer them from package support.
