What the lightweight setup needs to do
A continuous nursery-rhyme stream has two separate jobs: play or encode your material on a host, then send a compatible live feed to YouTube. A small Linux machine can reduce the host’s power and maintenance burden, but lightweight operating system does not mean the video workload is lightweight. Real-time decoding, resizing, or encoding can be demanding, and the evidence available does not establish that a particular Raspberry Pi model will sustain your specific resolution, frame rate, codec, and playlist continuously.

For a headless machine that does not need a desktop, Raspberry Pi recommends Raspberry Pi OS Lite. Its setup guidance supports configuring networking and SSH or Raspberry Pi Connect while imaging the boot media; VNC is not compatible with Lite. The OS image needs at least 8 GB of storage according to Raspberry Pi’s getting-started guidance. That is boot-media guidance, not space for a video library: size media storage from the actual files you plan to keep locally.

A Pi offers a compact headless Linux path, but treat it as an experiment until the real stream has passed a sustained test. Select the board based on the workload, storage needs, repairability, and cooling—not on a claim that one model is guaranteed to encode 24/7. If the chosen pipeline stutters, drops frames, overheats, or cannot keep up, move to a more capable general-purpose Linux host rather than lowering quality blindly.

Ethernet is an optional reliability choice where cabling is practical. A UPS is also optional, but size it for the actual load and runtime you need; there is no universal UPS size for this setup.
Prepare Raspberry Pi OS Lite and remote access
- Image the boot media. Use Raspberry Pi’s imaging workflow to install Raspberry Pi OS Lite. Use boot media of at least 8 GB for the operating system, then plan separate or additional storage for your video files.
- Set up remote administration before first boot. In the imaging setup, configure network access and enable SSH or Raspberry Pi Connect so you can administer the machine without a monitor and keyboard. Do not plan on VNC with Lite; Raspberry Pi says it is incompatible.
- Connect the model-appropriate power supply and network. Prefer a stable wired connection if you have Ethernet available. Wi-Fi can work, but its dependability depends on your local signal and network conditions.
- Install and configure the playback/streaming pipeline you have validated. The available official guidance does not establish a tested combination of board, FFmpeg build, restart supervisor, cooling, and storage endurance, so do not treat any generic command as a guaranteed 24/7 recipe. If your source files are already encoded in a format and configuration accepted by YouTube, avoid unnecessary decoding and re-encoding when your selected pipeline allows it.
Configure a YouTube-compatible live feed
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Configure the chosen encoder to meet the current ingest guidance for the output profile you intend to use, then verify it in a private or otherwise suitable test stream before making it the public channel feed.

The bitrate figures are YouTube ingest guidance for this specific H.264 profile, not a test of Pi encoding capacity or a guarantee of quality over your connection. Other resolutions and frame rates have their own guidance; consult YouTube’s current encoder settings before selecting them. Leave enough network capacity for a stable upload and test under the conditions in which the stream will actually run.

Connect the stream key safely
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the live stream workflow for your channel.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown by YouTube into the encoder’s corresponding server/URL and key fields.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password: do not put it in a public script, screenshot, log, or shared support message. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Start a test transmission and check YouTube’s stream-health status, picture, sound, and synchronization before relying on it.
Menu names and available live features can change with YouTube Studio updates and account eligibility, so use the current controls displayed for your channel.
Build a loop and plan for stream boundaries
Use a playlist or looping mechanism in the playback pipeline that you have tested with your source files. Check both the transition from the last item back to the first and what happens when a file is missing, unreadable, or has unexpected audio. A looping list is not by itself an uptime plan: the encoder process, network, power, and YouTube ingest can each fail independently.
YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when stopped. A genuinely continuous service therefore needs a deliberate approach to session boundaries, restarts, and whether those archives should remain available. Decide whether to schedule sessions, how the next session will begin, and how you will avoid confusing viewers with unintended gaps or duplicate archives. Do not assume that an indefinitely running encoder removes platform-side session limits or archive behavior.

Test before calling it always-on
Use the exact board, operating system, storage, media files, output settings, and network planned for production. A short test can catch configuration errors, but it cannot establish long-term stability. Run a longer representative test and watch for resource pressure, thermal issues, dropped frames, audio/video drift, network interruptions, and behavior at playlist boundaries. OBS’s Linux requirements list OpenGL 3.3 and X Window System or Wayland, and explicitly caution that meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee streaming performance at a desired resolution, frame rate, encoder, or scene complexity. That is another reason not to infer streaming capacity from the word “Lite.”
Operational checks
- Confirm the YouTube preview shows the intended video and audible, correctly synchronized audio.
- Check YouTube stream health and the host’s logs or monitoring for dropped frames, reconnects, and process exits.
- Verify the loop continues across file changes and recovers from an individual playback error.
- Test the recovery procedure for a network interruption and a host restart instead of assuming either will be seamless.
- Review storage space and the condition of locally stored media; keep boot-media capacity separate from library capacity.
- Keep the stream key confidential and document how to rotate it if it is exposed.
Clear rights for the actual nursery rhyme material
Before streaming, establish that you have rights for the specific recordings, arrangements, performances, and visual material used. A nursery rhyme’s underlying composition being old or familiar does not automatically clear a modern recording, arrangement, illustration, or video. Confirm that permissions cover public live streaming and, if relevant, monetization and the territories in which viewers may watch.
YouTube provides live-content rights-management settings, but those settings do not establish that you own or have licensed the content. Rights clearance is the creator’s responsibility; a stream can face claims or restrictions even when its technical setup is correct.
