Which Android browser best combines tab management and custom search?
Vivaldi has the strongest documented combination of the two features. Its Android feature overview describes a flexible tab bar and two-level tab stacks. Its Android search instructions explain how to add custom engines, use nicknames, and set different defaults for standard and private tabs.

Those features make Vivaldi a practical starting point for someone who keeps many pages open and wants control over where searches go. They do not show that it uses less memory or storage than other browsers. “Lightweight” can mean several different things, and the available evidence does not establish a current winner across them.

Set up custom search in Vivaldi for Android
Vivaldi lets you choose defaults for ordinary and private browsing independently. To change them, open Menu > Settings > Search Engine, then select Standard Tab or Private Tab and choose an engine.

To add an engine manually, go to Menu > Settings > Search Engine > Add Custom Search Engine. Enter the engine’s name, nickname, and search URL. On some websites, you can instead long-press the site’s search field and select Add as Search Engine. A nickname can then be used from the address field to switch engines for a search. The exact setup steps are documented in Vivaldi Help.
What “lightweight” should mean for your phone
There is no single measure that answers whether an Android browser is lightweight. Consider the cost that matters to you:

- RAM use: memory consumed while browsing. The cited official feature pages do not publish comparable RAM measurements.
- Battery use: affected by the browser, screen, pages, network, and device. A past benchmark can provide context but cannot predict your phone’s result.
- Data use: depends on the pages loaded and browser settings; no comparative measurements are established here.
- Interface simplicity: a subjective fit. Firefox Focus emphasizes a minimal, disposable session, while Vivaldi offers more controls for organizing tabs and searches.
If low RAM or storage is the deciding factor, do not treat feature lists or product descriptions as proof. Compare browsers on the same handset and Android version, using the same websites, tab count, settings, and network conditions. That makes the result more useful for your own workload, even though it will not automatically generalize to other phones.

What the available performance study does—and does not—show
Matteo Varvello of Nokia Bell Labs and Benjamin Livshits of Brave Software published “Shedding (Some) Light on Mobile Browsers Energy Consumption” in the IFIP TMA 2021 proceedings. Their benchmark covered 15 Android browsers, workloads involving up to 600 websites and 100 concurrent tabs, and multiple devices and network configurations. The authors wrote that “Opera is the most efficient browser when dealing with a large number of concurrent tabs.” In their tested workloads, Opera was the most energy- and CPU-efficient once concurrent tabs exceeded 20.

The paper also reported that five of eight ad-blocking browsers showed significant battery savings against popular comparison browsers, with savings up to 30% for Brave, and that dark mode that darkened the whole webpage delivered an average 12% additional battery savings on AMOLED devices. These are findings from that study, not promised results for current browser versions or present-day phones. Its tests used older devices, operating systems, and browser builds, including Android 8/9-era devices and browser versions from 2020–2021. The results do not establish current RAM use, app size, or a universal battery ranking. See the 2021 paper for its study context.

Firefox Focus is aimed at quick, minimal sessions rather than keeping a large, organized set of tabs open. Mozilla’s product page and Google Play listing emphasize a distraction-free experience, no open tabs in its main experience, and one-tap clearing. Mozilla Support also explains how to add a search engine to Firefox Focus for Android. It is a reasonable secondary option if session simplicity matters more than persistent tab stacks; Mozilla’s “fast and minimal” positioning should not be read as a measured RAM comparison.

How to choose
- Choose Vivaldi when tab stacks and configurable search engines are the priority.
- Consider Firefox Focus for short sessions that you intend to clear, not for maintaining tab groups.
- Treat Opera’s high-tab efficiency as a result from a 2021 benchmark, not evidence that today’s Opera is the lightest option.
- If “lightweight” means low memory or small installation size, look for current measurements on your device rather than inferring performance from features.
