For most YouTube livestreams from a desk, start with one light near the camera, around face level. Adjust it until your face is clear without washed-out highlights. Add a softer, dimmer fill from the other side only if the shadows bother you; a backlight is optional. A lamp, window, or monitor can work, so a dedicated streaming light is not a prerequisite.
Start with one light near the camera
Put a light behind or close to the camera, roughly at face level, and aim it toward you. Streamlabs gives this as a practical starting point for a single streaming light. Streamlabs’ lighting guide
- Frame yourself as you will appear on stream, then turn on the light.
- Adjust brightness until your face is easy to see while retaining detail in bright areas; avoid a washed-out look.
- If you wear glasses and see a reflection, move the light higher or to one side, then check the camera view again.
- Make a short test stream or preview so you can judge the image in the actual camera framing rather than by looking at the light directly.
A light close to the camera is simple and often suits a tight desk, though frontal placement can look flat and a single source can leave noticeable shadows. Choose a setup that fits your room and image

Compare options by brightness control, diffusion, color-temperature adjustment, mounting footprint, distance from your position, and whether you can place the source without glasses glare.

Add fill light when shadows need softening
In a two-light arrangement, the key is the main light: place it off to one side to shape the face. Put a softer or dimmer fill on the opposite side to reduce the shadows the key creates. Fill does not have to mean buying another lamp; window light, reflected light, or a white surface used to bounce the key may help. For a three-point arrangement, keep the jobs distinct: the key illuminates you, the fill reduces key-created shadows, and the backlight helps separate you from the background. A background light is another optional choice, not a substitute for lighting your face. Add color or edge lighting only if it supports the look without distracting from the subject.

Choose gear by practical fit, not a universal ranking
A dedicated adjustable LED streaming light can make brightness control and mounting repeatable. Other useful categories include a diffused LED video panel or softbox for a larger or more flexible arrangement, and a reflector or white foam board to bounce light and soften shadows. A ring light is another compact option; Ikan recommends diffusion filters to reduce circular reflections. Check the stream, not just the room
Lighting choices depend on your room, camera framing, glasses, ambient light, and the look you want. YouTube supports mobile, webcam, and encoder livestream workflows; its computer webcam instructions recommend trying a test live stream. Before an important broadcast, look at the stream preview and adjust the light’s position or brightness if the face is unclear, highlights are blown, or glasses reflect the source.
