Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For a child whose schoolwork happens mainly in a browser, a Chromebook is a sensible starting point. TechRadar’s current children’s-laptop guide names the Acer Chromebook Spin 312 its overall pick, but that is editorial guidance—not a universal answer or a firsthand test here. Check the school’s software and account rules before buying; choose Windows or macOS if required apps or family needs call for them.
Start with the school’s requirements
Before comparing models, ask the school what the child must run and how the device will be managed. A browser and classroom web tools may work well on ChromeOS; specialist programs or other Windows-only software can require a Windows laptop. A school account or school-issued Chromebook may also be subject to administrator policies that affect sign-in and access.

- Confirm the required operating system, apps, and any school account requirements.
- Ask whether the child will use a personal device or a school-managed one.
- Decide whether a touchscreen or convertible design would be useful for the child’s activities.
- Set a budget and expected ownership period, then compare the exact configurations available to you.
TechRadar notes that ChromeOS cannot run all Windows software, so do not assume a Chromebook will support a program simply because it is used for school. TechRadar’s children’s laptop guide discusses this compatibility distinction.
Which kind of laptop suits each use?

Rankings are editorial, and a model name alone does not establish that every configuration is suitable. Prices, stock, and current listings vary by country and retailer; no budget or location is specified here.
Choose a configuration for the actual workload
Memory
As a rule of thumb, Tom’s Guide says 4 GB of memory can be enough for light Chromebook use, such as a few learning sites, while it recommends at least 8 GB for heavier browsing and app use. This is review guidance, not a guarantee or a universal minimum. Consider how many tabs and apps the child is likely to use, and verify the memory in the exact configuration.
Rank #2
- Designed to look and feel like a grown-up computer, this first laptop for kids helps build basic computer skills using a full-size QWERTY keyboard and cursor controller

Screen, keyboard, and form factor
A convertible touchscreen may suit drawing, reading, or touch-based activities, while a conventional laptop may be preferable if the child mainly types and uses a desk. Compare screen size, keyboard comfort, weight, and whether the child can carry and use the device comfortably. The available evidence does not establish one size or design as best for every age.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDurability and ownership period
For a device expected to last through several school years, look at build quality, repairability, and the remaining software-update period alongside the purchase price. These vary by model and configuration; verify them for the specific device rather than relying on the product family name.

Plan account supervision before handing over the device
On compatible Chromebooks running ChromeOS 71 or higher, Google says Family Link can help parents manage websites and supervise app use. For a personal Chromebook, Google also describes controls for approving apps, managing device settings, and setting screen-time limits. These controls depend on the account and device setup.
- Set up the child’s account and Family Link supervision using Google’s Chromebook account-management instructions.
- Review who is allowed to sign in. Google warns that guest mode or additional unrestricted users can let someone use the Chromebook without the Family Link settings applying.
- Agree on the rules for schoolwork, apps, and screen time, and check the settings on the account the child actually uses.
- If the device or account belongs to the school, ask the administrator which controls apply. Google says administrators determine access for school accounts and school-issued Chromebooks.
Family Link does not provide identical supervision everywhere: Google’s Family Link FAQ says some features—including app management, Chrome filtering, and screen-time limits—do not apply to a child’s activity on iOS or the web. Google’s guide to learning and exploring on a personal Chromebook describes Chromebook-specific family controls.

Check updates and learning-support features
Google says Chromebooks released from 2021 onward receive ten years of automatic security and feature updates under the policy it introduced in 2024. That is a broad policy statement, not a substitute for checking a particular device: use Google’s Chromebook for Education overview and verify the exact model’s support status, especially when considering a used Chromebook.
Google for Education lists Reading Mode, Select-to-speak, and a built-in screen magnifier among Chromebook features. These may help some learners, but they are not a guarantee that a particular device meets an individual child’s accessibility needs. Try the relevant features with the child and check any school accommodations.
Best Value
- Storage: 16GB Flash Memory
- OS: Chrome OS
- Screen Size: 11.6"
A practical buying decision
- Choose ChromeOS if the school’s work is browser-based and the required apps and account policies support it.
- Choose Windows or macOS if a required program or family-specific need cannot be met on a Chromebook.
- Compare exact configurations for memory, screen and keyboard suitability, durability, and remaining update support—not just the model name.
- Set up supervision deliberately and verify who can sign in before the child begins using the device.
For most families starting with web-based learning, a modest Chromebook is a reasonable place to begin comparing options. The Acer Chromebook Spin 312 is one review-backed candidate; the school’s requirements and the specific model configuration should decide whether it is the right one.
