Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For an Android-only Kotlin app, Timber is a practical starting point when you want a small convenience layer over Android’s native logger. For shared Kotlin Multiplatform code, consider Napier. Choose kotlin-logging when you want Kotlin-friendly syntax over SLF4J and are prepared to configure a logging backend. Klogging is worth considering when structured events and coroutine-aware context are central requirements. These are different approaches, not a performance ranking: the cited project and platform documentation provides no controlled comparison establishing a fastest library.
Which Kotlin logging library fits your Android app?
| Library | Best fit | What it adds | Important setup or caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Timber | Android-specific apps seeking a compact API over Android Log | Extensible Tree instances, a DebugTree that can infer tags, and bundled lint checks for issues such as formatting, tag length, and exception logging. | The app must plant Trees; none are installed by default. Timber is Android-oriented. Timber project |
| Napier | Kotlin Multiplatform apps that share logging calls across targets | Platform support documented for Android, Darwin targets, JVM, and JavaScript, with target-specific output mechanisms. | Output and behavior are platform-specific, not one identical sink everywhere. Android uses android.util.Log; JVM uses java.util.logging.Logger. Napier project |
| kotlin-logging | Kotlin code using the SLF4J ecosystem | Kotlin-oriented logger creation and lazy message lambdas, delegating to SLF4J. | It is a facade, not the destination: add and configure a runtime implementation. Verify artifact coordinates and compatibility for the version you choose. Project documentation; Android artifact listing |
| Klogging | Teams prioritizing structured events and coroutine-aware context | The project describes itself as pure Kotlin, with structured logging and coroutine support. | The project documentation says Android builds require SDK 24 or later. Compare its output and configuration needs with an Android-first option. Klogging project |
How to choose
Start with the source sets you need
If logging calls live only in an Android app, Timber or Android’s native API may be enough. If shared source must log on Android as well as iOS-family Darwin targets, JVM, or JavaScript, Napier’s documented target coverage is relevant. Check the current release’s target support before adopting it.
Decide who controls the destination
Android’s native logging API writes into the system logging facility that Logcat displays. Timber builds on Android Log and lets installed Trees add behavior. Napier routes through platform-specific mechanisms. kotlin-logging delegates to SLF4J, so the chosen runtime implementation—not the facade alone—determines the actual output and level handling.
Match the extra features to a real need
- Choose Timber when Android-oriented convenience and its documented lint checks are useful.
- Choose Napier when shared multiplatform logging calls matter more than identical output across targets.
- Choose kotlin-logging when the project already uses, or intends to use, SLF4J-compatible logging and can configure a backend.
- Evaluate Klogging when structured events or coroutine context are requirements rather than optional extras.
Understand the Android Logcat baseline
Logcat is Android’s tool for viewing app and system messages; Android describes it as a command-line tool that dumps system messages, including messages written by an app with the Log class. The Android logging system maintains circular buffers including main, system, and crash. Calls can be filtered at multiple stages—compile time, by system properties, by the application, and in the display—and build tooling can remove some calls. A wrapper changes how code produces or routes messages; it does not replace this underlying Android logging system. Android Developers: Logcat

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

Set up the chosen library deliberately
Timber: plant Trees during application startup
Timber has no Tree installed by default. Plant the Trees your app needs early in startup, commonly in Application.onCreate(). Without that setup, adding Timber calls alone does not establish the desired logging behavior. Its Tree abstraction is also the extension point for behavior beyond the base API.
kotlin-logging: include a runtime implementation
Because kotlin-logging is an SLF4J facade, add a compatible runtime logging implementation and configure it for the destinations and levels the app requires. Do not assume that adding the facade dependency by itself will produce configured output.

Napier: account for each target’s output
Napier shares a logging API, but the output mechanism depends on the target. Its documentation maps Android to android.util.Log and JVM to java.util.logging.Logger; do not assume that configuration or output is identical across platforms.
Verify versions and compatibility before adding dependencies
Coordinates and version examples can differ between artifacts and documentation. The kotlin-logging repository README gives a JVM artifact example at version 7.0.3, while the Android artifact listing shows 7.0.14; those are separate artifact listings, not interchangeable declarations of one version. Check the selected library’s current project documentation and package listing, then confirm compatibility with the project’s Kotlin version, Android Gradle Plugin, Android SDK, and any required backend before copying a dependency example.

What the evidence does—and does not—establish
The project and Android documentation supports choosing by platform coverage, architecture, setup responsibilities, and features. It does not establish a controlled performance winner, nor does it substantiate comparative speed, popularity, or usage claims. Treat these libraries as architectural choices and evaluate them against the needs of your app rather than an assumed universal ranking.
