PocketBook is another direct option on qualifying firmware. Neither brand guarantees access to every library or every loan. Check your country, library, exact model, and the title’s format before choosing a device.
Which e-reader is best for borrowing library books?
Start with a Kobo if your priority is borrowing and reading library eBooks on a dedicated reader. Kobo lists the Clara BW, Clara Colour, Libra Colour, Elipsa 2E, Sage, and several older models for built-in OverDrive borrowing. On supported devices, you can browse, borrow, place holds, and sync eligible eBooks. Kobo says you need a library card and Wi-Fi.

That recommendation has important limits: built-in borrowing depends on your location and a participating library, and not every library title is available through Kobo. The country lists on Kobo’s own pages differ: its borrowing page lists Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Thailand, while its separate Libby country page also includes Malaysia. Check the current Kobo borrowing support page for your model and account region, and confirm availability with your library rather than assuming that a device works everywhere.
For a direct Libby experience that can include more than eBooks, consider a qualifying PocketBook. If neither dedicated-reader route fits your library or location, Libby on a phone or tablet is a straightforward alternative; an older compatible e-reader may also work through a computer-transfer process.

What to know about borrowing on Kobo
Check the country, library, and model
Kobo’s built-in library feature is available only in listed countries and requires a participating library. The device name alone is not enough: check Kobo’s current support information and ask your library whether its catalog works with Kobo/OverDrive in your region. Kobo also notes that some library titles are not available from Kobo, and some Kobo titles are not available through the library.
Libby loans do not all sync to Kobo
Libby says some borrowed eBooks will not sync to Kobo because they are not compatible. A title’s presence in Libby therefore does not guarantee that it can be sent to a Kobo. Kobo e-readers also do not support Libby-borrowed audiobooks or magazines. See Libby’s Kobo eBook guidance before relying on a particular format.

Expect holds and library-set loan periods
Library eBooks are governed by lending licenses. A library may have a limited number of copies, popular titles can have a wait list, and the library sets the loan period. Kobo says borrowed books return automatically when the lending period ends. Its instructions for the feature are at Kobo’s public-library borrowing guide.

OverDrive says PocketBook x Libby is available on devices running firmware 6.10 or higher, including the Era Color and Verse Color. Its guide describes borrowing, returns, renewals, holds, library-card management, and access to eBooks, audiobooks, and magazines. That makes qualifying PocketBook models worth considering if you want more than eBook reading on the device. Does a Kindle work with public-library books?
It can, but the public-library Kindle route is U.S.-only. OverDrive says eligible Kindle-format books from U.S. public libraries can be borrowed through Libby or a library’s OverDrive website and sent to a Kindle. That does not mean every Libby title is available in Kindle format or that the same route works outside the United States. If your e-reader supports Adobe Digital Editions (ADE), OverDrive documents a computer-based transfer method for library eBooks. It is less direct than borrowing on the device and requires a Windows or Mac computer.

- Borrow and download the eBook from your library using its OverDrive service.
- Open the downloaded eBook in Adobe Digital Editions on your Windows or Mac computer.
- Connect the compatible e-reader to the computer with a suitable data cable.
- In ADE, transfer the book to the connected reader.

How to choose before you buy
- Ask your library what it supports. Confirm its digital catalog and whether it offers the titles you want through Libby or OverDrive.
- Check regional support for the exact model. Do not infer built-in borrowing availability from the brand alone.
- Check the formats you actually borrow. Kobo is an eBook-focused Libby option; PocketBook’s documented Libby support includes audiobooks and magazines on qualifying firmware.
- Decide whether a computer workflow is acceptable. ADE can extend options for compatible older readers, but adds setup steps.
- Choose an app instead if compatibility is uncertain. A phone or tablet running Libby avoids tying the decision to a particular e-reader’s built-in library support.
