If a Kindle book is missing or stuck waiting to download, check the internet connection first, then run a manual sync. Next confirm the Kindle is registered to the Amazon account that owns the title, deliver the book to the intended device if needed, and check for order issues or library filters. Restarting and updating the Kindle come later.
1. Check Wi-Fi and Airplane Mode
Kindle books need an internet connection to download or sync. On the e-reader, open its network settings, make sure Wi-Fi is on and Airplane Mode is off, and confirm that it is connected to the expected network. Re-enter the network password if necessary. Check whether another device can use the same Wi-Fi, and move closer to the router if the Kindle’s signal is weak.

Amazon notes that a public hotspot may require a sign-in page. If the Kindle connects to the hotspot but does not reach the internet, open a simple website in the Kindle browser to see whether a sign-in prompt appears. Amazon’s Kindle Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide also covers manually adding a network.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck whether the router’s Wi-Fi is compatible
Wi-Fi support varies by Kindle generation. Amazon says Kindle devices do not support 6 GHz Wi-Fi; models released before 2021 also do not support 5 GHz or WPA3 encryption. If an older Kindle cannot join a newer router network, try a compatible 2.4 GHz network with supported security settings rather than assuming the Kindle is faulty. Amazon’s compatibility guidance is model-dependent, so check the generation of your e-reader.

2. Run a manual sync
A sync checks for pending items and can also update reading progress, notes, and highlights across devices. It does not necessarily deliver a book that has not been sent to the Kindle yet.
On a Kindle e-reader
- Return to the Home screen.
- Tap the Sync icon, or open Quick Actions or the menu and choose Sync and Check for Items. Labels can vary by model and software version.
- Wait for the sync to finish, then check the library and download the book if it appears.
See Amazon’s e-reader sync instructions.
In a Kindle app
Open the app’s More menu and choose Sync or Sync Now. The exact label and location vary by platform and app version; Amazon’s app instructions are listed in its missing-content troubleshooting page.

Sync requires internet access and may be disabled in sync settings. Amazon says sync is enabled by default; if you turn it back on, notes, highlights, or bookmarks made while it was off may be lost. Consider that before changing the setting if you rely on annotations. See Amazon’s Kindle sync-settings guidance.

The e-reader or app must be associated with the Amazon account that owns or borrowed the book. If you use more than one account, check which one is signed in and compare it with the account used for the purchase or borrowing. Amazon suggests verifying account credentials in a browser on another device if you are unsure which account is active.

If registration itself is failing, Amazon recommends checking the device’s displayed time, installing any available Kindle software update, confirming Wi-Fi, entering current account credentials, and restarting the e-reader. Follow Amazon’s Kindle registration troubleshooting steps.
4. Deliver the book to the Kindle from your Amazon account
If the title is in your Amazon library but not on the intended e-reader, send it to that device through Manage Your Content and Devices, then sync again.

- Choose Deliver or remove from device, select the intended Kindle, and apply the change.
- Run a sync on the Kindle and check its library.
If the title is missing from your account’s content list, check Your Orders → Digital Orders and confirm that the purchase completed. Amazon directs customers with an incomplete order to retry or change the payment method; that is an order issue, not a Kindle connection fault. These steps are covered in Amazon’s content troubleshooting guidance.

5. Check for library filters
A book can be in the library but hidden by the current view. In the Kindle library or app, select All, clear active filters, refresh, and search for the title again. Sorting by Recent can help surface a newly added book. If it appears in the library but is not stored on the device, select it to download; a hidden title is different from a failed download.

6. Restart the Kindle and check for updates
Keep the Kindle charged while restarting it. Also check for available Kindle software updates. If the connection problem may involve the router, restart the modem or router, wait two minutes, and try the Kindle again. Amazon recommends these steps in its content troubleshooting and Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.
7. Test another network before considering a reset
Connect the Kindle to a phone hotspot as a diagnostic check. If it works there but not on home Wi-Fi, focus on the router or home network. If several devices also cannot connect, Amazon advises contacting your internet service provider.
Amazon lists a factory reset as a later option for persistent Wi-Fi trouble, after other connection steps. Treat it as a last resort: consult the instructions for your exact Kindle model before resetting, since the Wi-Fi help page does not specify reset consequences.
Quick Recap
Choose the next step by what you find
